Alright, mate, Rusty here. Let’s break this down.
We’ve got a solid run of swell coming through over the next couple of weeks. Swell is mostly from the east and east-northeast, running between 6ft and 8ft for the first week, with the period hanging around a pretty average 8 seconds. That’s windswell, not groundswell, so the shape’s gonna be a bit crumbly. The good news is the wind is offshore for most of the first week, locking in clean faces. The water temp is sitting at 83°, which is about 0.9° warmer than average – nothing crazy, just a touch of tropical warmth.
The only break on the menu here is Freights, a point break that’s exposed to the east. It’s beginner-friendly and exposed, but here’s the honest truth: this spot *rarely breaks*, so to have this many days in a row is pretty notable.
The standout period is from Thursday morning through to the following Sunday afternoon. It’s not about perfect, hollow waves – it’s about consistent, clean surf with steady offshore wind. Thursday morning kicks off with a 7ft east swell, 8-second period, and a fresh offshore breeze from the east, gusting 35 km/h (22 mph). The combined wave energy is sitting at 685 – moderate energy, solid enough for a point break. The waves are clean but the tide might muck it up. Friday and Saturday push up to 8ft on the same east-northeast swell with those same offshore winds. Over 8ft, that’s stepping into expert territory – beginners, sit this one out, especially with those 22 mph gusts. The energy climbs to 812 on Friday morning – moderate to strong – and that’s the real power.
Sunday the 12th is a bit softer, 6ft, but still offshore in the morning. By Sunday afternoon, the wind goes cross-off and the poor surf flag comes up. This pattern of marginal but clean surf holds through the first full week, with most days showing 6ft to 6ft swell, east or east-northeast, and offshore wind holding steady. The second half of the first week – around Monday the 14th and Tuesday the 15th – the period drops to 7 seconds, which is short and weak, so the waves get a bit bumpy and less defined, even with clean wind.
Into the second week, things ease off. Swell drops under 7ft, mostly sitting around 5ft to 6ft, with those short periods still hanging around. The real bright spot is Sunday the 19th afternoon – 6ft east-northeast swell, 8 seconds, moderate offshore breeze from the east, with the forecast saying “expect good surf conditions.” That’s the first time we see a proper thumbs-up. Also, Wednesday the 22nd afternoon and Thursday the 23rd morning and afternoon have the same “good surf” tag: 6ft and then 5ft to 5ft east swell, with lighter breezes. Those will be cleaner, more user-friendly days, especially for the less experienced crew.
The very end of the run – Friday the 24th – the swell is still around 5ft, but the wind goes cross-off and the weather turns cloudy. Not a washout, but the shine comes off.
If you want the pick of the bunch: Thursday 9th through Saturday 11th July is the heavy stuff – bigger, stronger, but only for those who can handle it. For the best all-rounder, aim for Sunday the 19th afternoon or Wednesday the 22nd afternoon. That second week is more consistent than you’d expect for a spot that rarely breaks. Keep an eye on the forecasts – long-range calls are always a bit more touch-and-go.
Rusty.
