The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Well, this is a tricky one for Freights. This spot rarely breaks, so when it’s on, it’s a special treat, but don’t hold your breath for a classic. The window starts on Friday the 21st of August, but honestly, it’s a rough start.
We kick off Friday morning with a 5ft swell from the ENE, but the wind is a fresh 30 km/h easterly. It’s offshore, so the surface should be clean, but the energy is weak, coming in at 339. It’s a bit marginal. Friday afternoon looks similar—still 5ft, still gusty. Not exactly pumping.
Saturday the 22nd is a write-off in the morning with a risk of thunderstorms and a messy cross-off wind. The afternoon improves slightly, with the swell dropping to 4ft and the wind turning offshore, giving us some clean little runners, but it’s not going to get your heart racing. Sunday and Monday follow the same pattern: small swell (3ft to 4ft), moderate to fresh offshore winds, and very weak energy in the 150 to 280 range. It’s clean, but tiny.
Then the wind turns cross-off from Tuesday the 25th through early Wednesday. The swell bumps up to 5ft to 6ft, and the energy gets moderate at 464 for Tuesday afternoon, but the wind is just not cooperating for Freights. It stays cross-off, so the waves will be messy. Not good. By Wednesday afternoon, the wind goes offshore again, and we get a consistent 5ft to 5ft with moderate energy (up to 387). It’s clean, but still pretty average.
Now, here’s the standout, and it’s a long-range one, so take it with a pinch of salt. Look toward the weekend of the 29th and 30th of August. The swell starts building. Saturday the 29th morning we get 7ft swell from the ENE with fresh offshore wind and strong energy at 651. That’s getting serious. Saturday afternoon, the real kicker arrives: a 8ft ENE swell, period lifting to 10 seconds, and the energy is very strong at 1875. Offshore wind, clean lines—this is the best on offer, but at 8ft it’s only for experts. It’s a classic groundswell pulse, and for a point break like Freights, that longer period will mean good shape and long waits between sets. Sunday the 30th holds similar size, 8ft to 8ft, with energy still in the strong range over 1000. The wind stays offshore. This is the window to circle, but it’s over a week out, so don’t book the time off just yet.
After that pulse, Monday the 31st of August eases back to 6ft to 6ft with much lighter winds. A light breeze at 10 km/h and good conditions. The energy is moderate, but the surf will be clean and fun, not the big stuff of the weekend. Tuesday the 1st of September and Wednesday the 2nd settle into 5ft to 5ft with clean surf and light to moderate offshore winds. Nice session waves, but nothing special.
Then we hit a poor run from Thursday the 3rd of September into Friday the 4th, where the wind turns strong and cross-off again with 6ft to 7ft swell—messy, not recommendable. Friday afternoon the 4th gets a brief clean-up with an offshore wind and 6ft ENE swell, moderate energy at 497. That could be a worthwhile session if you’re flexible.
So, in short: the first week is mostly small and clean or onshore and messy. The real highlight is the 29th and 30th of August with a strong, expert-level groundswell. After that, things calm down into fun, manageable waves. Keep an eye on that last weekend of August, ’cause if it holds, it’ll be the best we get.
Rusty.
