The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s going on for the next couple of weeks.
It’s a pretty quiet run ahead, to be honest. The first real surf we’ve got on the radar is setting in for Saturday afternoon, the 18th of July, at Freights. This is a point break that rarely breaks, so the fact it’s even showing swell is a bit of a rarity. Water temp is sitting at 83°, which is about normal for the time of year, so nothing wild there.
Saturday afternoon the 18th kicks off with a clean 7 ft swell out of the east, period a short 8 seconds, and a fresh offshore wind out of the east-northeast at 19 mph. The wind is bang on, keeping it glassy and clean. The combined energy is moderate at 586. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, but with the swell at 7 ft, that’s getting a bit chunky for total rookies. Still, the offshore wind and the point setup should produce some fun lines.
Sunday morning the 19th holds similar conditions, 7 ft east swell, 22 mph offshore breeze, but the afternoon drops to 7 ft. The wind stays clean. Monday the 20th is a little smaller, 6 ft in the morning and 5 ft in the afternoon, with a moderate offshore breeze. The energy drops to 329 then 279, still moderate but backing off.
By Tuesday the 21st we’re down to 4 ft and the wind goes cross-offshore, which isn’t as good. The period drops to 7 seconds, and the energy is weak at 169. Not great. Wednesday the 22nd is similar, with a short 6-second period and only 150-167 energy. The surf is there but the quality is poor.
Thursday the 23rd brings a small bump with 3 ft to 4 ft, period 7 seconds, and moderate offshore wind. Energy is still weak at 174-193. The afternoon is surfable but ordinary. Friday the 24th sees a pulse back up to 6 ft-6 ft, east swell, 8-second period, and fresh offshore winds in the morning, but there’s a risk of thunderstorms. Energy is moderate at 303-377. It’s marginal.
The weekend of the 25th and 26th is a write-off. Winds are cross-offshore, the swell is 6 ft but the conditions are poor. Monday the 27th has a 6 ft east swell with fresh offshore winds, energy 439, but it’s still just marginal. Tuesday the 28th is the next real standout. Morning has 6 ft east swell, 8-second period, moderate offshore wind, and the energy is 422. The comment says “expect good surf conditions” – that’s the best we’ve seen in a while. The afternoon is a bit more ordinary.
Wednesday the 29th afternoon shows a glimmer: 6 ft east swell, moderate offshore wind, energy 359, and again “expect good surf conditions.” But the real highlight is Thursday the 30th afternoon. That’s a full 7 ft east swell, 8-second period, light offshore wind at 12 mph, and strong energy at 531. The comment says “expect very good surf conditions.” That’s the pick of the whole run. Keep in mind, this is over a week away – promising but not a dead cert.
After that, the run fades into small, poor conditions through the end of July and into early August. The 2nd of August afternoon shows a last gasp of 5 ft east swell, moderate offshore wind, energy 250, and “expect good surf conditions,” but it’s a long shot out there.
Overall, the best bet is the Thursday the 30th afternoon session at Freights. The combination of a solid 7 ft east swell, light offshore wind, and good energy makes it a true standout. The Tuesday the 28th morning is worth a look too. Crowds are often an issue here, so expect company.
Rusty.
