Alright, this is Rusty. Let's have a look at the only game in town for the next couple of weeks – Freights.
Well, it's a bit of a flat spell to kick things off, but we've got a long, drawn-out run of surf coming through starting on Monday the 6th of July. This isn't a spot that fires up often – it's a point break that rarely breaks, so the fact we've got a solid sequence of days is pretty special. The water's sitting at a warm 83°, which is about average for the time of year, so nothing weird going on there.
The main event kicks off Monday morning with a building 6 ft swell from the ENE, with a modest period of 8 seconds and a moderate combined energy of 470. Winds are fresh and offshore out of the east at 19 mph, keeping things clean. That offshore flow holds all week, and the swell steadily climbs. By Wednesday the 8th, we're looking at 8 ft from the east, still a short 8-second period, but the energy is ramping up (703). The wind gets stronger on Wednesday afternoon though – hitting 28 mph from the east. It’s offshore and clean, but that's a stiff breeze and it’ll be hard to paddle into, so save your energy for the morning.
The standout for me is Thursday the 9th. We get an 8 ft swell from the east, and the period ticks up to 9 seconds. The energy is pounding at 963. With a fresh offshore breeze all day, that's the pick of the bunch. It's a point break, so that short-period, east swell should wrap in nicely. Keep in mind though, at 8 ft, this is getting into expert territory. Beginners might want to sit this one out.
Friday the 10th holds similar size at 8 ft with the same 8-second period, but the wind is a little more ENE, still offshore. The energy eases a touch to 887. Saturday and Sunday see the swell drop slowly from 7 ft down to 5 ft, but the offshore flow sticks around, so it’ll stay clean.
After that, we get a bit of a lull through the second week, but the consistency is surprising for a spot that rarely breaks. There’s a little pulse back up to 7 ft on the 14th and 15th, with clean offshore winds, but the energy is lower (around 463 to 437). The periods drop back to 7 seconds on the 16th, so the waves will be a bit weaker and mushier.
By the 21st, the winds go cross-off and the swell drops to 4 ft, with the whole thing looking poor. So, for this window, get on it early – that Thursday the 9th is the one to aim for. Don't sleep on it.
Rusty.
