Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let’s get this straight from the start: the only break on offer here is Freights, a tricky little point that rarely breaks properly. That’s the reality of this stretch of coast. The entire outlook is built on one spot, so if it’s not firing, we’re looking at a blank run. Keep that in mind.
The period begins with a bit of a gap—nothing really worth paddling out for until Friday morning. And I mean *barely*. Let’s walk through it.
Friday 3 July morning: It’s a struggle. You’ve got 7.2ft easterly swell but with an 8-second period—short period windswell, not much grunt. The wind is howling offshore at 25 mph out of the east. That sounds good in theory, but with that strength it's actually hard to paddle into. Water temp is sitting at 82.4°, which is about normal for the time of year. No major anomaly. The combined swell energy is moderate (549). I wouldn't rush.
Friday afternoon: Easing wind to 19 mph and still offshore. Swell holds at 7.2ft, period still 8 seconds. Cleaner conditions but still that short, fat energy. The score hasn’t improved much. A session if you’re desperate.
Saturday 4 July: Similar story. 6.9ft easing to 6.6ft, ENE offshore wind, still 8 seconds. Clean faces, but the wave quality is average. The energy drops slightly (572 down to 533).
Sunday 5 July: The wind shifts cross-offshore, which cleans things up, and swell hangs in around 6.2ft to 6.9ft. The energy picks up to 614 on the morning. But the period is still short—8 seconds. The reports say clean, but not inspiring. Not worth dragging the whole crew out.
Monday 6 July through Tuesday 7 July: A bit of a lull. Monday morning is poor, and by Tuesday you’ve got 5.9ft ENE swell with strong offshore winds, but energy is dropping (462). Quality is marginal at best.
Wednesday 8 July: A little bump. 7.2ft east swell, 8 seconds, offshore wind 22 mph easing to 19. Combined energy jumps back up to 602. Cleaner, but still that short-period windswell feeling.
Thursday 9 July: Now we’re starting to get some pulse. 7.5ft to 7.9ft, east swell, 8 seconds. Strong offshore wind at 25 mph in the morning—hard to paddle but clean. Energy climbs to 716 and then 765 in the afternoon. This is the standout of the first week. It’s still windswell, not groundswell, so don’t expect long walls, but for Freights, this is as solid as it gets.
Friday 10 July: The peak. 8.2ft in the morning, ENE offshore at 22 mph, 8-second period. Combined energy hits 877—the highest in the whole forecast. That’s moderate, getting into the strong range. This is the best session on offer. But heads up: 8.2ft on a short period at a point that rarely breaks consistently? That’s expert only. Beginners, sit this one out. The wind stays offshore all day, so it’ll be clean, but you’ve gotta earn every wave.
Saturday 11 July through Sunday 12 July: Dropping back. 6.2ft ENE swell, still offshore, 8 seconds. Energy around 497, then 427. Clean, but nothing to write home about.
Monday 13 July: Another low point. 6.6ft east swell, 8 seconds, offshore wind, but the rating says poor. Skip it.
Tuesday 14 July: Slight recovery. 6.6ft east swell, 19 mph offshore wind, 8 seconds. Energy at 498. Still average.
Wednesday 15 July through Thursday 16 July: Fading. 5.6ft down to 4.3ft, ENE swell, 8 seconds, light offshore. Combined energy drops from 348 to 228. It’s clean but small. Not worth the drive unless you’re local.
Friday 17 July: Finally, a bright spot in the second week. 4.3ft to 4.6ft east swell, period at 7 seconds (yep, short). Wind drops to 16 mph offshore. Combined energy around 224. The report says “expect good surf conditions.” For Freights, this might actually be the most user-friendly day for beginners if the tide lines up. Not epic, but clean and manageable.
Saturday 18 July: Ends on a quiet note. 5.2ft to 5.6ft ENE swell, 8 seconds, cross-offshore wind. Energy at 336. Clean but weak.
Overall standout: Without a doubt, Friday 10 July offers the most power of the whole 16 days. 8.2ft at 877 combined energy, clean offshore wind all day. That’s your best shot. But it’s a heavy day—only for the experienced. If you’re after something you can actually paddle into without getting worked, Friday 17 July might be your sneaky pick for a clean, smaller session.
