Alright, let’s break down what’s cooking at Ixtapa Island. This reef doesn’t pump every day – it’s inconsistent – but when the pieces fall together, it’s a real treat for the experienced surfer.
Kicking off Sunday morning the 5th, we’ve got a clean 4ft SSW groundswell with a long 16-second period, and the wind is dead glassy out of the NE. Water temp is a balmy 89° – way warmer than usual for this time of year, feels like a warm bath. The combined energy is strong at 1138, so there’s plenty of grunt. This is excellent surf for the guys who know their stuff.
Monday morning the 6th is another beauty. Swell drops to 3ft but the period stretches way out to 20 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. Winds are calm, totally glassy. Energy jumps to 1594, so there’s power to spare. That long period can make waves a bit straight on a beach break, but here on the reef it should wrap in clean. Top-notch for experienced surfers.
Tuesday the 7th morning brings more size: 6ft from the SSW with an 18-second period and glassy NE wind. That’s getting into expert territory size-wise, and with energy at 2014, it’s got some serious punch. If you’re skilled, this is your chance.
Wednesday the 8th morning stays solid with 5ft SSW swell, 16-second period, and clean cross-off wind from the east. Energy is 1345 – still strong. Thursday and Friday mornings the 9th and 10th are still good with 4ft SSW swell, 15-second period, and clean winds – cross-off from the NW on Thursday, NNW on Friday. Energy drops to around 903 and 822, but still plenty for a good session.
Saturday the 11th morning is clean with 4ft and cross-off NW wind – energy 731. Keep an eye on the afternoons though, the west wind picks up and gets choppy.
There’s a lull from Sunday the 12th afternoon through Monday the 13th morning – winds turn messy or onshore, energy drops. But Monday the 13th afternoon cleans up with a cross-off NW breeze and 3ft SSW swell at 13 seconds – energy 692. That gets you back in.
Tuesday the 14th morning is glassy with 3ft SSW swell, 13 seconds – energy 572. Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th mornings are glassy too, but the swell drops under 3ft and the period shortens, so quality fades. These are smaller, cleaner days for a longboard maybe.
Into the second week, Friday the 17th morning has a small bump – 4ft from the south with a short 9-second period, and clean cross-off wind. Not a standout but rideable. Saturday the 18th is a wash – small, choppy, poor.
Sunday the 19th morning is worth a look: glassy calm, 3ft SW swell with a 16-second period, energy 551. Clean but small. Monday the 20th morning is crossed-up and marginal.
The absolute best of the whole run? I’d put Tuesday morning the 7th at the top – that 6ft, 18-second groundswell with glassy wind and massive energy is a serious session for the hardcores. For a slightly smaller but still excellent window, Monday morning the 6th with that 20-second period and total glass is a dream.
Remember, this break is inconsistent, so when it’s on, you get out there. Crowds can show up sometimes, so plan ahead.
Rusty.
