Table - best surf conditions forecast for Ixtapa Island over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up for Ixtapa Island.
First up, the water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so nothing weird going on there. The swell energy is moderate, around 684 (units), so there’s some push, but it’s not big.
Right now, Sunday morning, it’s a bit messy. We’ve got a 4ft SSW swell with a 14-second period, but the wind is cross from the ESE at 3 mph, so it’s not clean. Afternoon goes cross-on and it’s not worth paddling out for. The first real bright spot is Monday morning (13 July). Wind is offshore from the NNE at 6 mph, and the swell is a clean 3ft from the SSW, 13-second period. That’s a good window for an intermediate surfer – the reef will handle that long period well, and the crowds are only sometimes there, so you might get a few waves to yourself. The combined energy sits at 629 (moderate), and the conditions are described as clean. That’s the standout for the first few days.
Tuesday morning (14 July) is glassy with a 5ft SE swell, period 9 seconds. That’s shorter period, but the glassy wind and moderate energy (816) make it worth a look if you like a bit more punch. By Tuesday afternoon, the swell jumps to 7ft from the SSE, but it’s cross-on and choppy – that’s big and messy, only for experts, and even then it’s not great.
The middle of the week sees a drop in size. Wednesday morning (15 July) has offshore wind and a 2ft SSW swell, 12-second period – clean but small. Thursday and Friday mornings are glassy with 2ft to 3ft swell, so you can get a fun little session in if you’re patient. Combined energy is weak (251 to 318), so it’s a gutless kind of day.
The next real standout comes on Sunday, 19 July. Morning is dead calm, glassy, with a 4ft SW swell at 17 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, perfect for a reef setup like Ixtapa Island. The energy is 925 (moderate-to-strong), and the conditions are very good. That’s a session to mark on the calendar – clean, lined-up waves.
Then Monday, 20 July, morning is even better. Offshore wind from the east at 3 mph, 4ft SW swell, 16-second period, and the energy is 1095 (strong). The forecast says “excellent for experienced surfers.” That’s the best of the whole outlook. The reef will love that long period, and with the clean conditions, it’s going to be proper. Crowds are only sometimes, so you might have a chance.
Tuesday morning (21 July) is still good – 4ft SW, 15 seconds, clean with cross-off wind. Energy is 736 (moderate). Not as strong as Monday, but still a solid session.
After that, the swell drops again mid-week, with glassy mornings on Wednesday and Thursday (22-23 July) but tiny waves, 1ft to 3ft. The last big push comes on Saturday, 25 July, morning. Glassy, 4ft SSW swell at 21 seconds – that’s a very long period, huge energy at 1713 (strong). The reef will handle it beautifully, but that long period means it might be a bit too straight for a beach break; here it’s a reef, so it’s fine. The Sunday (26 July) and Monday (27 July) mornings are also excellent, with 5ft to 6ft SW swell, 18-second period, and glassy to offshore wind. Energy is over 2000 (very strong). That’s expert territory, but if you’re experienced, those are the best waves of the whole 16-day window.
So, to sum it up: the best on offer is Monday morning, 20 July, with the 4ft SW swell and offshore wind. The close second is Saturday morning, 25 July, with the 4ft very long-period glassy swell. The rest of the time is a mix of small clean mornings and bigger, messier afternoons.
Rusty.
