Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Ixtapa Island over the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a solid run of surf coming, so don’t be sitting on the beach twiddling your thumbs.
Things kick off on Tuesday morning, July 7th, and right out of the gate it’s looking tasty. We’ve got a 5.6ft SSW groundswell rolling in with a very long 18-second period. The combined energy is pumping at 1822 (moderate wave energy), and with the wind glassy from the ESE at just 3 mph, it’s going to be pristine. This is a reef break, which is perfect for that long-period stuff – it won’t just close out. However, at this size, it’s one for the experienced crew; beginners will find it a handful. The water temp is about average for the time of year.
Wednesday morning the 8th keeps the momentum with a similar 5.2ft SSW swell, 16-second period, and glassy north winds. Energy is still strong at 1308. Another morning of excellent waves for those with the skills.
Thursday the 9th sees the swell drop a notch to 4.3ft, but the period stays at a solid 15 seconds. The morning brings a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNW at 6 mph, keeping things clean (energy 885). This is very good surf – a touch smaller but still fun and well-shaped.
Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th are the real standouts of this first week. Friday morning is dead calm, zero wind, with a 4.3ft SSW swell and 15-second period – absolute glass (741). Saturday morning is the same story: zero wind, glassy conditions, with a 3.9ft SSW swell and a long 15-second period (725). These are the mornings to be in the water. Clean, lined up, and uncrowded feeling if you’re early.
Sunday the 12th and Monday the 13th offer smaller but still fun morning sessions. Expect 3.9ft and 3.3ft SSW swells, both with glassy conditions and periods around 13-14 seconds. Good for the longboard or a fun mid-length.
We hit a bit of a lull in the afternoons through this period – the wind swings onshore and chops things up. Stick to the mornings.
Now, looking further ahead, the second week has some promising, though less certain, energy. Wednesday morning, July 15th, brings a solid 6.6ft SSE swell, but with a short period of 10 seconds. The wind is cross-offshore from the east, making it clean. This is a big one, definitely expert-only territory. The energy reads 1057 (moderate wave energy).
The next real standout to circle is Tuesday morning, July 21st. We’ve got a 6.2ft W swell with an 11-second period, and a clean cross-offshore breeze from the north. The combined energy jumps right up to 1584 (moderate wave energy). This is a powerful, angled swell that should work really well at this reef, offering excellent conditions for experienced surfers. Then Wednesday morning the 22nd keeps it going with a 5.9ft W swell, 12-second period, and clean cross-offshore wind – 1506 energy. Another cracking morning for the advanced crew.
Also worth a mention for the more adventurous: Thursday evening, July 16th, has a 4.9ft SSW swell with a clean offshore breeze – a sneaky good window.
So, the *best* of the best? Friday morning, July 10th and Saturday morning, July 11th. Small, clean, glassy, with lovely long-period SSW swell. Perfect conditions for a reef break, and the crowds are only *sometimes* an issue, so you should get your share. For the bigger-wave hunters, Tuesday morning, July 21st is the long-range one to watch closely.
Stay stoked.
