The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here, let’s break it down. The next couple of weeks look a bit slow to start, but if you hang tight, there are some real crackers waiting for you.

We’re talking about Ixtapa Island, a reef that doesn’t break all that often, so when it does, you need to be ready. The water is sitting at 89°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – feels like a warm bath, so don’t expect a cool-off when you fall in.

Right now, Monday morning the 13th is showing a clean 3ft swell from the SSW with a light NNE breeze, making it nice and cross-off. The energy is moderate (584), and the 13-second period means there’s some shape to the waves. Not huge, but a solid start. The afternoon turns onshore, so get your fix early.

Tuesday the 14th morning is similar – 3ft, clean, light offshore wind. Keep it to the morning sessions. Afternoons are messy with that cross-onshore wind.

Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th mornings are small and clean. The swell drops to 2ft on Wednesday morning, but it’s glassy and clean with a 16-second period, so you’ll get some long, drawn-out lines. Thursday bumps back up to 3ft, still clean.

Now, Friday the 17th morning is a real standout for the early week. The wind goes glassy, absolutely flat calm, with a 3ft SSW swell at 13 seconds. The energy is moderate (361), but with those conditions, it’s going to be silky smooth. This is a lovely, quiet session.

The real highlight is shaping up for Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th. Sunday morning shows 3ft from the SW, 17-second period, and glassy conditions. The energy jumps to 910 – that’s a solid pulse. Monday the 20th, though, is the one to circle. The swell pushes to 4ft, still from the SW, with a 16-second period and a dead calm, glassy morning. The combined energy is 1132, so you’re getting a proper push. This is excellent for experienced surfers – it’s got enough power to make the reef work, but it’s not out of control. The afternoon will be onshore, so the Monday morning session is your best bet.

The following week keeps delivering. Saturday the 25th has a tiny 3ft swell but a 21-second period – that’s a very long period groundswell, and it’s glassy. It’ll be walled up and straight at the beach, so the reef at Ixtapa Island will be your friend for those long, peeling lines. Then Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th mornings both serve up 3ft to 5ft swells with glassy conditions and energies over 1100. These are the other top-tier windows, especially for the more experienced crew who can handle that 5ft push on the reef.

Overall, don’t stress about the patchy afternoons – the mornings are where it’s at. The best two hands-down are Monday the 20th and Sunday the 26th mornings. Be there, dawn patrol, and you’ll score.
