The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Ixtapa Island over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but once the energy builds, there are some absolute crackers on the horizon. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
The best early window kicks off on Wednesday the 15th of July. Ixtapa Island (reef) will see a clean 2ft swell from the SW with a very long 16-second period, and glassy conditions in the morning. The combined energy is moderate at 434, and with that super long period, the waves will have plenty of shape and power, but it’s a reef setup, so it’ll handle that long period beautifully. The downside? It’s inconsistent, and crowds are sometimes a factor, so you might have to share the peak.
Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th offer similar small, clean mornings with 3ft to 3ft SW/SSW swells and glassy or light offshore winds. The energy is moderate (318 to 411), and the period drops to 12-13 seconds, so it’s a bit more manageable. Still a fun little run.
Then we hit the standout. Sunday the 19th of July. That morning Ixtapa Island gets a 4ft SW swell with a 17-second period, combined energy of 891, and light offshore winds. It’s still within the intermediate range, but the reef will be working nicely. The model is calling it very good, and I’d be paddling out early.
The real highlight, though, is the last week. On Friday the 24th of July, a very long-period 24-second swell rolls in at 3ft, but with energy at 642, it’s got more push than the size suggests. The wind is light offshore, so it’ll be clean. Then Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th of July both deliver solid 4ft to 5ft SW swells with periods of 18-20 seconds, and energy jumping to 1048 and 1654 respectively. That’s strong wave energy. The mornings are clean with offshore winds. This is expert territory for the bigger days, but the reef will be handling it, and the sets will be organized. If you’re experienced, these are the sessions to target.
Beyond that, the 28th of July morning keeps it going with 6ft SSW, 17-second period, glassy conditions, and 1981 combined energy. That’s serious power. Only for the confident crew.
The afternoons mostly get messy with cross-on winds, so stick to the mornings. From the 27th, the wind picks up and the quality drops off, so the call is clear: hit the early windows and don’t sleep on the last weekend.
Rusty, signing off.
