The Lowdown
G’day, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s brewing for Ixtapa Island over the next couple of weeks.
For a spot that’s inconsistent, things are looking pretty promising here. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 89°F, so you’ll be comfortable in boardshorts.
The first real chance to get waves is Thursday morning, 20 August. It’s cloudy with a light NNE breeze blowing straight offshore at 3 mph. The swell is 3 ft from the SSW with a 13-second period, and the combined energy is moderate (331). This is the kind of clean, lined-up reef wave that makes you forget about work. Expect good surf conditions.
Thursday afternoon the wind swings cross-onshore from the WSW at 9 mph and it gets sloppy. Not worth it.
Friday morning, 21 August, brings back the clean lines with a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNW at 6 mph. Swell is still 3 ft from the SSW, now with a 14-second period, and the energy is a bit stronger (389). This is a good session.
Saturday morning, 22 August, is a standout. There’s a risk of thunderstorms, but the wind is light offshore from the NE at 3 mph. Swell bumps up to 3 ft from the SSW, 13-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 640 – moderate, but feeling punchy. Expect very good surf conditions. This is the best early call.
The next true standout lands on Sunday morning, 23 August. Some clouds, light cross-offshore breeze from the NNW at 3 mph. Swell drops to 2 ft but the period stretches to 18 seconds – that’s groundswell, baby. The energy is strong (816) and the waves will have shape and power. Expect very good surf conditions. This one is a gem.
Monday morning, 24 August, is glassy with a light NE breeze at 3 mph. Swell is 3 ft from the SW, 17-second period, and energy is moderate (631). Expect very good surf conditions again. A beautiful morning.
Tuesday morning, 25 August, is cleaner with a light cross-shore breeze from the ESE, but the swell is small at 2 ft and the energy drops to 338. It’s marginal.
Wednesday morning, 26 August, brings glassy conditions again with an ENE breeze at 3 mph. Swell is 2 ft from the SW, 16-second period, and energy is moderate (307). Expect good surf conditions. A nice little session.
Thursday morning, 27 August, is glassy with a light E breeze at 3 mph. Swell is 2 ft from the SW, 18-second period, and the energy is strong (630). Expect very good surf conditions. Another solid morning.
Now, clear your calendar for Friday morning, 28 August. Glassy conditions, light ENE breeze at 3 mph. Swell is 4 ft from the SSW, 17-second period, and the combined energy is very strong (1198). This is excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers. The swell is getting up there, so it’s for the crew who know what they’re doing.
Saturday morning, 29 August, is also glassy with a light WNW breeze at 3 mph. Swell is 6 ft from the SSW, 16-second period, and energy is very strong (1700). Excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers again. This is big, powerful, and clean – but watch the size, it’s expert territory.
The following week has some decent morning windows. Thursday morning, 3 September, has a risk of thunderstorms, light cross-offshore breeze from the E at 3 mph. Swell is 4 ft from the SW, 17-second period, and energy is very strong (1194). Excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.
Friday morning, 4 September, is absolutely glassy with a calm E wind. Swell is 4 ft from the SSW, 16-second period, and energy is very strong (1066). Excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers. A perfect way to finish the outlook.
The absolute standout is Friday morning, 28 August – glassy, solid groundswell, and heaps of energy. That’s the one to chase. Saturday morning, 29 August, is a close second if you’re after bigger, more powerful waves.
Crowds are possible at Ixtapa Island, so get there early for the best windows.
This is Rusty, signing off.
