The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's shaping up for our little slice of paradise.
We've got a bit of a slow start, but patience will pay off. The first real offer is on Thursday morning, the 16th of July, at Ixtapa Island. It's a reef break, and it’s inconsistent, so you can't just rock up anytime. But Thursday morning looks promising with a clean 3 ft SSW swell, and a period of 12 seconds. The wind is light from the north at just 3 mph, keeping the surface glassy. The wave energy is moderate (318). The water temp is about what you'd expect for this time of year.
Now, Friday morning the 17th, is where it starts getting interesting. The wind goes glassy from the SSW, and the swell ticks up to 3 ft from the same direction, with a 13-second period. The combined energy is moderate (404) and conditions are looking glassy. This is a solid morning to be out.
But the real standout? Look at Sunday morning the 19th of July. The swell jumps to 4 ft from the SW with a 17-second period, giving it real grunt. The combined swell energy is strong (1126). The wind is a light cross-offshore from the NW at 6 mph, keeping it clean. The rating says it's for experienced surfers, and with that long period, the sets will have some power and the lulls will be longer. This is the session to circle on your calendar for some quality reef waves.
Then, Monday morning the 20th is another gem. We've got a glassy 4 ft SW swell with a 16-second period, and strong wave energy (1075). This is excellent for experienced surfers. The wind is dead calm from the ENE, which is magic.
Moving into the second week, the energy hangs in there. Tuesday the 21st, Wednesday the 22nd, and Thursday the 23rd all offer glassy mornings with solid 4 ft to 4 ft SW/WSW swell. The combined energy stays in the strong range (over 650). These mornings are all excellent to very good.
Further out, the swell really starts to pump. Friday morning the 24th of July brings a 3 ft swell, but with a very long 24-second period. That’s a proper groundswell. The energy is strong (1103) and the wind is glassy. That long period will make it focus on the reef, so the shape could be incredible. And it gets bigger. Saturday morning the 25th sees 4 ft with a 21-second period, pushing the energy up to 1387. Sunday the 26th through Tuesday the 28th all have 5 ft to 6 ft SW swell. This is big, powerful stuff. The mornings are glassy with calm or near-calm winds. This is expert territory. The big highlight in that stretch is Monday morning the 27th: 6 ft from the SSW at 17 seconds, with completely calm wind. That’s a day for the big boards and big balls.
The final standout is Friday morning the 31st of July. 8 ft of swell from the south with a 13-second period, and a light offshore breeze from the north. The wave energy is massive (2807). This is a serious swells, only for experts.
Remember, this spot is inconsistent, so you need to be on it when it's on. The crowds can be around, especially on the good days. For the first week, early mornings are your friend. For the second week, the size picks up dramatically, so pick your battles.
That’s the look from here.
Rusty.
