Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Hey folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up for Ixtapa Island (Ixtapa-Island). The water’s sitting at 88°, which is a couple degrees warmer than you’d usually expect for this time of year – that’s a proper anomaly, feels like bathwater already.
Alright, the first window of surf isn’t exactly firing straight away, but things build nicely. Thursday the 2nd is a bit of a write-off with a marginal combo and light onshore wind, so I’d give that a miss. But by Friday morning the 3rd, we get our first real taste – glassy conditions, an east wind so light it’s barely there, and a clean 4ft SSW swell pushing in from the south-southwest, period around 14 seconds. That’s solid groundswell energy (moderate wave energy at 806), and the glassy surface means you won’t be fighting chop. Crowds are a possibility here, but with it being an inconsistent reef break, that can actually thin out the lineup a bit.
Saturday morning the 4th stays glassy, but the swell dips to 3ft so it’s a smaller, cleaner session. Still, a zero wind reading and SSW groundswell makes for a fun little morning if you’re after some smooth lines.
Now, here’s the standout: Sunday morning the 5th. We’ve got a clean 4ft SSW groundswell, period holding at 16 seconds, and a gentle NNE breeze that’s glassy. The combined energy jumps to 1139 – that’s moderate to strong – and the wind state is full glass. For a reef setup, that long-period swell is gonna wrap in nicely with plenty of push and clean faces. This is your call to get out there early. It’s excellent for experienced surfers, so if you’ve got the skills, this is the one to aim for.
The following week keeps a steady supply of surf, but with more variable winds. Tuesday the 7th brings a bigger bump – 6ft SSW swell in the morning, period 18 seconds, strong energy (2127) and a cross-off wind from the NNW keeping it clean. That’s excellent for experienced crew again, but the size starts to push into ‘too much for beginners’ territory. By Wednesday the 8th, we’re still seeing 5ft with a glassy morning, so another good window for those who can handle it.
After that, the swell settles back to around 3-4ft through the second week, with some clean mornings but a lot of cross-on afternoons. The session on Saturday the 11th morning looks tidy – 4ft, 15 seconds, cross-off breeze – but the energy is dropping. By the time you hit mid-July, it’s fading fast: Wednesday the 15th gives you a tiny 2ft in the morning, and after that it’s mostly small and choppy. The 16th and 17th have some clean-ish moments, but the swell’s running out of steam.
Bottom line: Sunday morning July 5th is the best call – glassy, 4ft SSW groundswell with good period, and the reef should be handling it beautifully. Tuesday the 7th morning is a close second for bigger waves, but only if you’re comfortable at 6ft. Other days are fun but nothing to write home about.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
