The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s shaping up for Ixtapa Island. This is a reef break that’s inconsistent by nature, so when it turns on, you gotta be ready. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 88.5°F, so the tropics are feeling a little extra toasty.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but the first real window of opportunity hits on Friday morning, July 17th. The swell is a clean 3.0ft from the SSW with a long 13-second period, and a light northerly cross-offshore breeze is going to keep the surface glassy. The combined wave energy is moderate at 419. It’s not huge, but it’s a fun, clean wave for someone who knows the reef. Just keep in mind, this spot is inconsistent, so when it’s good, it’s a gem.
Saturday morning, July 18th, offers a similar vibe with a 2.0ft SW swell and a very long 16-second period, but the energy is a bit higher at 381. The wind is light and cross-off again, so the surface will be clean. It’s a smaller day, but for a longboard or a funboard, it’s a nice way to spend the morning.
Now, the standout session for the first week is Sunday morning, July 19th. The swell jumps to a solid 3.6ft from the SW, with a 17-second period. The combined energy is strong at 1003. The wind is almost nothing out of the NNW, just a slight air, giving you clean conditions. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers – not too big, but the long period means the waves will have plenty of punch and shape. This is the one to circle on your calendar.
Monday morning, July 20th, is an absolute gem. The swell is 4.3ft from the SW, 16-second period, and the combined energy is strong at 1067. The wind is dead calm – glassy conditions. This is about as good as it gets for a reef break like this. The waves will be clean, lined up, and waiting for you. Another excellent session for experienced surfers.
Tuesday morning, July 21st, is almost as good. The swell is 3.6ft from the SW, 14-second period, and the combined energy is strong at 717. The wind is glassy again, with just a slight air. The waves will be very good, clean, and fun.
Looking further ahead, the second week has some real promise, but it’s a bit more of a long-range call. Friday morning, July 24th, is interesting – the swell drops to 2.3ft, but the period is a massive 24 seconds from the SW. The combined energy is strong at 832. This is a very long-period groundswell, and on a reef break, it can produce some beautifully lined-up waves. The wind is glassy, so it’s a very good session, but be aware that with such a long period, the sets will be further apart.
Saturday morning, July 25th, is a standout in the long-range. The swell is 3.6ft from the SW, with a 21-second period, and the combined energy is very strong at 1421. The wind is glassy, and conditions are rated excellent for experienced surfers. This is the kind of day that could be magic.
Sunday morning, July 26th, keeps the quality going. Swell is 5.2ft from the SW, 18-second period, with a very strong combined energy of 1767. The wind is glassy again. This is a step up in size, and for experts, it’s going to be a ripper.
Monday morning, July 27th, is the biggest of the run. The swell hits 6.2ft from the SW, 19-second period, and the combined energy is very strong at 2846. The wind is a light cross-offshore out of the NW, keeping it clean. This is only for experienced surfers – the power will be serious. Be aware that at this size, it might be too much for beginners.
Tuesday morning, July 28th, is a bit of a mixed bag with moderate rain and a light cross-shore, but Tuesday afternoon, July 28th, is where it’s at. The swell is 5.6ft from the SSW, 17-second period, with a very strong combined energy of 1602, and the wind goes glassy. That’s another excellent session.
Thursday morning, July 30th, offers a solid 3.9ft SSW swell with a 14-second period and a clean offshore breeze from the NE. The combined energy is 685. This is a very good, clean option for the end of the month.
The run fades out into early August. Saturday morning, August 1st, is a small, clean 2.6ft option with a light cross-offshore breeze, but the energy is only moderate. It’s a nice, easy wave to finish the outlook.
