The Lowdown

Grab your board. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty darn good for Los Gatos, a reef set-up that’s exposed to the southwest. The water’s sitting at 89°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year—you’ll be glad for that in a shorty or spring suit.

This whole stretch is really about the mornings. The afternoons get chopped up by a cross-onshore breeze, so keep your sessions early. This is an inconsistent wave, so you gotta pick your moments, but when it lines up, it’s worth it.

We kick things off this Saturday morning, August 8th. It’s cloudy with a light cross-offshore breeze and clean, lined-up surf. We’re looking at 4ft of southwest groundswell with a long 16-second period. The combined energy is moderate at 819. It’s a bit soft, but clean and rideable for the intermediate crew.

Sunday the 9th holds similar size with a 4ft SSW swell, but the period drops a touch. The morning is the call again with a light offshore wind. After that, the afternoons turn a bit messy. Monday the 10th is much the same—morning windows with clean 4ft surf, but the afternoon drops off.

Tuesday the 11th is a gem. The wind goes glassy in the morning with a 3ft SW swell at a solid 18 seconds. The energy is moderate, but the clean conditions make it feel better than the numbers suggest. Wednesday and Thursday mornings are also worth a paddle, offering clean 3ft waves.

But the real standout of this run is Friday morning, August 14th. The swell kicks up to 4ft from the southwest with an 18-second period, and the energy jumps into the strong range at 1418. The wind is glassy, making for truly excellent, experienced-surfer conditions. This is the best session of the first week by a long shot.

Saturday the 15th is also strong, with a 5ft southwest swell and 1193 energy, but it might be pushing into the bigger range for some. The morning glass is still the go.

The second week is a bit more of the same, but a little less consistent. The surf dips slightly, but we still see clean, glassy mornings through Tuesday the 18th. The swell drops to around 3ft to 4ft, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had.

The week after that, things back off. From the 21st through the 23rd, the swell eases down to under 3ft. There are still some clean pockets on the morning of the 23rd with a 2ft, 18-second SW groundswell, but it’s smaller and more for the longboard. The afternoons get pretty messy anyway.

The 14th and 15th are your best bets—bigger, clean, and powerful. Don’t sleep on the 11th either, as that glassy morning with 18-second groundswell will have some nice lines. Just remember, this spot doesn’t break all the time, so when the morning glass aligns with that SW groundswell, you don’t want to miss it.

Rusty.
