The Lowdown
Alright folks, let’s be straight with each other. Looking at the next couple weeks, this is a quiet, flat run for Hammonds Reef. There’s no proper surf on the cards, not one day in the entire 16-day window that gets the heart racing. The swell’s small, the winds are mostly cross-onshore, and the whole ocean looks like it’s on a go-slow. It’s just one of those stretches.
From the jump on Monday the 17th, we have a tiny 2ft SSW swell with a 15-second period. The water’s a super warm 70°, running a full 7° above the usual for this time of year. That’s a big deal. Air’s clear, but the wind is a light 10 km/h cross-onshore breeze, just enough to mess with the surface. It’s poor, plain and simple.
Tuesday and Wednesday don't get any better, with the swell dropping to a measly 2ft. The period hangs long between 14 and 16 seconds, but with no size, it's pointless. That cross-onshore wind stays on us.
Through Thursday and Friday, the energy just falls off a cliff. The combined energy goes from a moderate 191 down to a weak 96. You're looking at 2ft of swell. There’s a brief moment on Friday morning where the wind goes straight onshore, but with that tiny swell, it’s still a washout. The ocean’s just flat and weak.
The first weekend remains tiny. Saturday sees a shift to a 2ft W swell, but the period drops to a short 9 seconds. That’s just a weak, choppy bump. Not worth the sunscreen. The total energy is still in the weak to moderate bracket.
The second week is more of the same. Swell heights stay under 2ft, periods hang around 14-16 seconds, and that light cross-onshore breeze just doesn’t quit. We do see a bit more energy on the 29th and 30th, with the combined swell energy hitting a moderate 308 and 351, but that’s still only pushing 3ft of SSW swell. More movement, but still not ridable. The comment from the forecast is consistent: "poor surf conditions."
We close out on September 1st and 2nd with moderate energy in the 292 to 303 range, but again, it’s just small, junky, cross-onshore slop. The swell is mostly from the SSW, which isn’t the ideal direction for this spot, so it’s not even wrapping in properly.
Bottom line: there are no standout days, no calls to make. The only good news is the warm water, but that’s about it. This reef is going to be quiet, and that’s a good thing. It's a flat spell. You might get a few knee-high dribblers, but conditions will be poor. This isn’t even looking fun for the kite crew—just a flat, still ocean.
Keep the boards in the rafters, but don't hold your breath.
