The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. The next 16 days don’t look like much at all, to be honest. We’ve got a pretty flat spell on our hands, and nothing that’s really going to get the heart pumping. There’s a single break on the cards, and it’s a tough one to get excited about.
Hammonds Reef is the only game in town, and it’s a sheltered reef setup that’s best for advanced surfers. Water temps are sitting at 66° which is a good 4° warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s a nice bonus if you’re in the water. The first real chance of anything surfable comes Sunday afternoon, July 19th. We’re looking at a 3ft swell from the south, with a period of 12 seconds and a combined energy of 455 (moderate). The wind will be light and cross-on, so it’s not going to be clean, but it’s the first session that’s even worth a mention.
Monday, July 20th, sees a slight bump, with a 4ft south swell in the morning, 12-second period, and energy hitting 657 (moderate). Wind is light and offshore, so that’s a big plus for clean conditions. The afternoon holds up with 4ft from the south, 13 seconds, and energy at 536 (moderate). These are the best two days on offer, but even then, the forecast is marginal. Crowds are likely here, so don’t expect a quiet lineup.
After that, it’s a long, drawn-out period of poor surf. From Tuesday the 21st right through to August 1st, we’re stuck with small, weak swells, mostly under 3ft, and cross-on winds that are going to keep things messy. There’s a novelty spike on Wednesday, July 23rd, with a 6ft windswell from the west, but the period is a horrible 6 seconds and the wind is cross-shore. That’s going to be a choppy, bumpy mess, and honestly, it’s looking more like a kite surfing day than a paddle surfing day. The energy is 437 (moderate), but it’s all noise.
The second week is a total write-off. Swell heights hover between 1ft and 3ft, with long periods in the teens, meaning those long waits between sets. The wind is consistently light cross-on, which is never ideal for a reef. The standout is really just the Monday the 20th for the cleanest conditions, but even then, it’s nothing to write home about.
So, overall, a very quiet 16 days. The only real window is Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th, with Monday morning looking the cleanest. Keep your expectations low and your wetsuit zipped.
Rusty.
