The Lowdown
Alright, let's talk about Hammonds Reef, and I'm not gonna sugarcoat it – this is a real quiet stretch. This is a sheltered reef that needs a clean west wind to fire, and we're just not getting that.
Right now, the water is sittin' at 69°, which is a solid 6° warmer than usual for this time of year. That's way out of the ordinary, makes the whole place feel a bit weird.
From the 19th of August all the way through to about the 29th of August, it's just a long line of poor surf. The swell is tiny – mostly 1 to 2 feet – coming from the SSW or SW with a light cross-onshore breeze that's messing up any chance of a clean face. The wave energy is weak, with numbers like 106 and 188 – nothing to get excited about. The forecasters are calling it "poor surf conditions" every single session, and I can't say different.
Then, on Sunday the 30th of August, we finally see a little pulse. The morning shows a 3-foot SSW swell, with a period of 16 seconds – that's a proper long-period groundswell. The combined energy jumps to 479 (moderate), the highest we've seen. The wind is still a light cross-onshore, so it won't be glassy, but it's the best chance for a wave. Still, the forecast only gives it a 1 out of 10, calling it "marginal." For a reef, that long period can be a good thing – it'll push in with some shape – but the cross-onshore will put a wrinkle on it.
After that, it's back into the quiet through the start of September. The swell drops back to 2 to 2 feet, and while there's a little more energy on the 31st of August (312), it's still not enough to get stoked about.
The real standout, if you can call it that, is that Sunday the 30th of August morning. It's the only session that even comes close to being rideable. If you're desperate, that's your window. But honestly, this spot is usually fairly consistent, so this dry spell is a bit unusual. It won't stay this way forever – forecasts can change. For now, keep the board in the car and wait for the wind to play ball.
