The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this outlook is a tough one. For the next couple of weeks, Ha Golshim is not giving us much to work with. It’s a sheltered little beginner spot that’s inconsistent at the best of times, and right now it’s barely ticking over. We’re looking at a long stretch of days with barely a ripple, so don’t get your hopes up for any proper waves until the very end of the run.
Looking at the first proper surf recommendation, we’re on for Tuesday morning, the 18th of August. The water’s sitting at 86°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – feels more like a bath than the ocean. There’s a tiny pulse of 3ft swell coming out of the WNW, with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined energy is weak, only 84. That’s small, weak, and a bit sloppy, especially with a light cross-onshore breeze. It’s really marginal, and the forecast is calling it poor. Not worth paddling out for.
From there, it’s a long, dry stretch. Wednesday the 19th through to Monday the 31st of August are all showing poor surf conditions. Swell sizes stay tiny – mostly between 1ft and 2ft – and the period is short, 5 to 6 seconds. The wind is often onshore or cross-onshore, making things choppy. There are a few glassy mornings, like Wednesday the 19th, Saturday the 22nd, and Tuesday the 25th, but with almost no swell, glassy conditions just mean flat and pretty, not surfable.
Even when we get a bit of a bump around Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th of August, with swell nudging up to 4ft and period hitting 8 seconds, the wind is cross or cross-onshore, and the combined energy is still only moderate – 149 and 153. The forecast still calls it poor surf. The setup here is a sheltered beach, and with the wind spoiling it, it might be more interesting for a kite than a paddle.
The only real glimmer comes way out on Friday the 28th of August morning. There’s a 2ft swell from the WNW with a period of 9 seconds – that’s a touch longer, suggesting a bit more shape – and the combined energy is 75, still weak. The wind is a gentle cross-shore, which is better than onshore. But again, the forecast is calling it poor. It’s just not enough.
For the first week of September, it gets even smaller and windier. Nothing to report.
Honestly, for this area, a blank run like this is pretty normal. It’s a sheltered, inconsistent spot, and when the swell is this small, you’re better off waiting for a proper pulse and a clean wind window. Forecasts can change, but right now, don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
