Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. This stretch of the forecast is a real grind for H-Reef. We’ve got swell running through the entire 16-day window, but the conditions are just not playing ball. The wind is locked in from the east-northeast to east, blowing a solid cross-shore breeze that’s kicking up a lumpy cross-chop. It’s going to feel messy and frustrating out there. The combined energy of all swells directed here ranges from moderate to strong (306 to 772), so there’s push in the water, but it’s all wasted on a rough surface. The swell direction is a steady ENE to E, but the optimum swell for this reef is from the NNE, so it’s a bit off-angle, making things even more awkward. The period is short, around 7 to 8 seconds, so you’re getting windswell, not groundswell – choppy, weak lines. For the first week, from Sunday 5th July right through to Tuesday 14th July, the surf report is consistently “poor surf conditions” with zero scores. It’s a tough slog. The water temp is about 79°F, which is normal for the time of year, so at least you won’t freeze waiting for a clean one that isn’t coming.
The only glimmer in this whole outlook shows up on Friday 17th July. The morning and afternoon sessions are marked as “marginal” – a score of 1 out of 10. The swell bumps up to 8ft from the east, with a period of 8 seconds, and the energy jumps to a strong 772. That’s decent size, but it’s still cross-shore wind from the ENE at 12 mph. The waves will be lumpy and a bit of a battle. At 8ft, this is getting into expert territory, especially on a reef break with a short period. It’s not the standout you’d want, but it’s the only day on the chart where the report even hints at a possible session. Crowds are listed as “sometimes” at H-Reef, so you might have a few others out there hoping for the same.
After that, Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th July drop back into “poor surf conditions” territory, with the swell easing to 6ft. The energy is still moderate (462 to 499), but the wind stays onshore and messy. The final days, Monday 20th July, see the swell drop to 5ft. There’s just no clean window to recommend here. The setup is, frankly, more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, with that consistent cross-shore wind and moderate to strong swell energy. It’s a long stretch of poor to marginal conditions, and the only remotely possible session is that Friday 17th, and even that’s a gamble. Keep your eyes on the charts, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
