The Lowdown
Hey folks, Rusty here. Let's chew on what's coming down the pipe for H-Reef these next couple of weeks. I'll level with you, the first ten days or so are a total wash. The wind is just stuck out of the east, blowing cross-shore and making a mess of things. The combined energy in the water gets up to a moderate 361 on the afternoon of the 22nd, but with that wind, the waves are just choppy junk. So for about a week and a half, don't bother putting the board on the car.
Around the end of the month, the swell starts to show some real teeth. On the 30th of August, the combined energy jumps to a strong 1408 with the swell hitting 2 feet out of the ENE. The period is a solid 14 seconds, so it's a proper groundswell. But the wind is still a cross-shore at 12 mph, so the quality is just called marginal. It's a tease, a promise of what's to come.
The session that's got me stoked, the only true standout, is the morning of Thursday, September 3rd. We've got a 1 foot swell from the ENE and the wind is forecast to go glassy. Dead flat. That's the ticket. The swell period is a short 8 seconds, so it's a windswell, but with conditions that clean, you'll be getting some beautiful, smooth waves. The water is sitting at a warm 80°, so trunks and a rash guard will do. That morning is the one you want.
The next morning, Friday the 4th, has a bit more size at 2 feet from the ENE, but the wind goes cross-shore at 9 mph, which takes the shine off it. It's still probably a fun session, but nothing like that glassy Thursday.
Remember, H-Reef is an advanced reef break, so it's no place for the faint of heart. The swell is coming from the east, but the break works best with swell from the north-northeast, so it's not a perfect angle, but that clean, glassy wind on the 3rd is too good to pass up. That's your window, right there.
Rusty.
