The Lowdown
Right, gather ‘round, check it out. Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for this stretch. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough one. For the next couple of weeks, H-Reef is looking like a total write-off, with a blank run that stretches from now all the way through to the morning of Friday, 25 July. That’s a solid 11 days of absolutely nothing worth paddling out for. The wind is a constant cross or cross-on, mostly from the ENE or E, and the swell is all short-period, messy junk. The water temp is sitting at 79°, which is bang on average for this time of year – no surprises there.
Honestly, for most of that time, the combined swell energy is a low, weak reading. For example, on the afternoon of Tuesday, 14 July, you’re looking at weak energy (281) from the NE at 5ft, and it’s just poor. The whole first week is a bust.
Now, around the 25th and into the weekend, things start to *look* a little different on paper, but it’s still a gamble. The morning of Saturday, 25 July, we see a bump in swell height to 6ft from the ENE with energy jumping to a moderate reading (544), but the wind is still a cross-shore chop. The wave comment says “marginal.” It’s better than the zero, but it’s not a good bet.
The real interesting bit comes on Sunday, 26 July. We’ve got a 3ft swell from the E, but check the period – 14 seconds! That’s a proper long-period groundswell, and the energy is strong (738). That’s a very different beast. The problem is, H-Reef is a reef break, and while that long period suits a reef, the wind is still cross-shore from the ENE at 9 mph. It’s a gentle breeze, but it’s still cross-shore with a slight chop. The rating still says “marginal.” It’s the only flicker of life in this whole 16-day window, but it’s a tentative one. For a seasoned local who knows the reef, it might be a fun, cleanish wave, but it’s not a blower.
H-Reef is a fairly consistent spot, and it’s rare to see a run this quiet. The blank run is more unusual for this area, but it’s what we’ve got. We’re just going to have to wait for the forecasts to change.
Rusty.
