The Lowdown
Well, gather round, crew. Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for our local patch, H-Reef. Let me tell you, it’s a strange, frustrating run we’ve got ahead of us. The ocean’s got plenty of energy, no doubt about that, but the wind just won’t play ball for a proper surf session for ages.
For the first nine days or so, it’s a write-off. The swell is small to moderate, a real mix of east and northeast directions, but the wind is constantly cross or cross-onshore. That’s a recipe for bumpy, chopped-out conditions. The wave comment on the data is clear: “poor surf conditions” all the way from Tuesday, the 18th of August, right through to Wednesday the 27th. That’s a solid ten-day gap of no go. The water temp is sitting pretty at 80°F, about average for this time of year, which is the only nice thing I can say about that period.
Now, from Thursday, the 28th of August, things shift. The swell picks up in a big, serious way. We start seeing combined wave energy into the hundreds and then into the thousands – powerful stuff. The comment changes to “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions,” but there’s still that pesky cross-shore wind. It’s a grind.
If I *had* to point to a true standout, it would be the window around Saturday and Sunday, the 29th and 30th of August. The swell is solid. We’re talking 8ft pumping up to a raw 12ft on the Sunday morning, all from the east with a decent 10-second period. The combined energy is massive – we’re looking at over 2000 (2143) on that Sunday morning. That’s a whole lot of ocean moving.
But – and this is a big but – H-Reef is a reef break that prefers an optimum swell from the north-northeast. This east swell is a bit off that angle, and the wind is still cross-shore. That much power with cross-shore wind on a reef means it’s going to be a bumpy, challenging beast. The wave comment is still "marginal," so don’t expect it to be clean, perfect waves. For the experienced crew who know the reef and are happy to wrestle a bit, that Sunday the 30th will have the size and the grunt, but it’s an expert-only game at 12ft. Beginners, stay well away. It’s too big and messy for you.
Honestly, for the whole 16-day run, there’s no real classic day where everything lines up. The power is there in the second week, especially around the 29th of August through to Monday the 31st of August, with a 10ft swell still hanging around. But the onshore vibes kill the quality. We just have to hope the wind shifts or the forecasts change, because a patch of water with this much raw energy usually finds its way.
Stay patient, keep your eye on the horizon.
Rusty.
