The Lowdown
Alright, let's be straight with you. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for H-Reef. That's the reality.
Through the rest of August, we’ve got a lot of small, messy, cross-shore slop. Honestly, there’s not a single session I’d paddle out for. The swell is tiny, with combined wave energy barely cracking 200 to 400 range (you know, weak to moderate stuff), the wind is constantly from the east, and it’s just choppy and unappealing. There’s a bit of a tease on Thursday 20th August afternoon when the wind goes glassy, but the swell is only 3ft from the NE with a short period – it’s surfable, but only just, and it’s not worth getting excited about.
The end of August and start of September actually see some solid swell pulsing through. But – and it’s a big but – the wind stays stubbornly cross-shore or cross-on from the east at 10 to 22 mph, trashing any chance of quality. This setup is actually looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The only day that raises an eyebrow is Tuesday 1st September. You’ll see a proper long-period groundswell push through from the east, hitting 10ft with a period around 14 seconds. That’s some serious energy (combined energy values over 3000). However, the wind is still a moderate cross-shore, which will put a lumpy texture on it. It’s a marginal call at best, and definitely only for the experts given the size. H-Reef is an exposed advanced reef break, and groundswell of this length can break a bit straight at a reef, so you’d need to be on your game. The water temperature is about average for the time of year.
If you absolutely have to surf, the highlight – and I use that word loosely – is that Tuesday 1st September. It’s the most powerful, biggest option by a mile. But with that wind, don’t expect perfection. The rest of the period is a write-off. We’re looking at a two-and-a-half-week stretch of nothing worth paddling for, which is a tough run.
Keep your eyes on the charts, but for now, stay home.
