Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. The forecast for the next 16 days is a tough one to swallow. We’ve got a solid run of swell on offer, but the wind is just not playing ball. It’s a classic case of plenty of energy, but nowhere to hide from the cross-shore breeze. The only break on the radar is H-Reef, and it’s not looking like delivering the clean, lined-up waves we’d want. There’s no standout, world-class session in this window, so we’re going to have to be realistic about what’s on the table.
The pattern is pretty locked in. From Sunday the 5th of July right through to Monday the 20th of July, the swell is pumping consistently, with heights ranging from 4 ft to 7 ft. The combined swell energy is moderate, with values between 262 and 456, so there’s definitely some push. But the kicker is the wind: it’s blowing from the east and east-northeast at 12 to 19 mph, and it’s cross-shore the entire time. That means every session is going to be lumpy, choppy, and messy. The period is mostly short, 7 to 8 seconds, so we’re dealing with windswell rather than any proper groundswell.
The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so don’t expect any surprises there.
The first few days kick off with a clean sky but a nasty cross-shore wind. Sunday the 5th of July has 6 ft swell from the east-northeast, but a 15 mph cross-breeze is going to make it a battle. The combined energy is 348, which is moderate, but the poor surf conditions are flagged. Monday the 6th sees a slight bump to 6 ft to 7 ft, and the energy climbs to 433, but the wind picks up to 19 mph, making it even more of a mess. This theme continues all the way through the first week. Tuesday the 7th has 5 ft to 6 ft swell with strong cross-shore wind, and the energy is 423 to 456. It’s just not clean.
The second week is more of the same. From Sunday the 12th of July, the swell drops a touch, with 4 ft to 5 ft, and the period stays stubbornly short. The combined energy dips to 325-391, but the wind is still cross-shore. By Monday the 13th, we’re seeing rain showers mixed in, but the wind is still 12 to 15 mph from the east-northeast. The session on Friday the 17th of July is the closest we get to a decent window. The swell is 6 ft from the east with a period of 8 seconds, and the wind drops to 9 mph. The combined energy is 399, and the wind is described as a "gentle breeze" with a "slight cross-chop". That’s the best of the bunch, but it’s still not glassy, and it’s still not clean. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are similar, with gentle breezes but still cross-shore, so the chop is still there, just less intense.
The bottom line is this: H-Reef is an advanced reef break that is fairly consistent, and the optimum swell direction is north-northeast, so the east-northeast swell is not a perfect match. The crowds are listed as "sometimes," so you might get a little space, but with the wind being so persistent, the quality is just not there. The swell is over 5 ft for most of the period, so it’s not for beginners, and with the 7 ft days it’s getting into expert territory, but the wind is ruining the shape. The short period means the waves are likely to be weak and crumbly, even with that energy. Honestly, with the consistent cross-shore wind and lumpy conditions, this setup might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
There is no true standout in this 16-day window. The best you can hope for is a slightly less messy session on Friday the 17th or Sunday the 19th of July, but don’t get your hopes up for a classic. The forecast can change, but right now, the wind is the boss, and it’s not our friend.
Rusty.
