The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break this down. Truth is, we’ve got a long, hard slog of flat, crappy conditions before anything worth paddling out for shows up.
We’re talking about H-Reef, a reef break that’s wide open to the swell. The first real chance of a wave doesn’t come until Tuesday, August 25th. From Monday the 17th all the way through Sunday the 24th, it’s just poor surf. The wind is blowing from the east and east-northeast, cross-shore or cross-onshore, and the swell is short and weak, around 7 to 8 seconds. It’s choppy, messy, and the combined energy is low, running from 88 up to 472 – not enough to get the heart rate up. You’re better off doing something else.
Then on Tuesday the 25th, the swell finally shows up at 2.1m from the east, but it’s still a short 8-second period. The energy climbs to 592 (moderate), but that east-northeast wind at 20 km/h is still cross-shore, so it’s not clean. It’s a marginal start, but it’s a start.
The real stand-out, the one you want to circle on the calendar, is Thursday, August 27th. A proper groundswell arrives. The morning brings 3.0m swell from the east with a very long 13-second period, and the combined energy hits 3221 (strong). The afternoon gets even bigger, 3.5m from the east at 12 seconds, energy at 3373. That’s serious, heavy water. The wind is still a cross-shore easterly at 20 km/h, so it’s not glassy, but for a reef break, that long-period groundswell will create deep, sucky, powerful waves. At 3.0m to 3.5m, this is strictly for experts. Beginners and intermediates, don’t even think about it. This is a big, mean ocean.
The 29th and 30th still have some size, but the energy fades, and then on the 31st we get another pulse of 2.5m from the east with an 11-second period, energy at 1843. Another good day, but the same cross-shore wind keeps it from being perfect.
The absolute best is that Thursday, the 27th of August. The biggest swell, the longest period, the most energy. For an experienced surfer looking for a serious, heavy reef break, that’s the one. Not perfect, but it’s the most powerful window of the whole 16 days.
