The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here. Let's break down the next couple weeks for H-Reef. This is a reef that works best with a NNE swell, but we're in for a rough patch. Water temp is about 79°, average for the time of year.
From Friday the 17th through to the 25th, it's a total write-off. Moderate cross-shore winds and a nasty cross-chop are making a mess of things. Swell is short period, 3 to 6 feet, with weak energy in the hundreds. The reports all say poor surf conditions, and that's what it is. Don't bother.
Starting July 26th, we get a pulse of longer period swell from the east, 16-17 seconds, and the energy jumps into the low thousands. But the wind is still cross, so it's only "marginal." Sunday morning might have a few workable ones, but that chop isn't going anywhere.
The one to watch is Monday, July 27th. A big, long-period groundswell hits: 7-8 feet, 16 seconds, and massive energy readings in the thousands. That's some serious power. For a reef, that long period should wrap in and give some heavy, lined-up waves. But here's the catch: the wind is cross-onshore from the NE at 9 mph, described as "gentle cross-onshore and fairly choppy." So the quality is only "marginal." It's the biggest swell of the period, and it's probably the best chance for an expert out there, but it's not going to be clean.
After that, the swell fades. By the 31st we're back under 5 feet, and into August it's tiny, like 2-3 feet. The long period is still there at 14 seconds, but the energy is low and the wind is still a problem.
Honest truth? No real standouts. The best of a mediocre bunch is that Monday the 27th if you're an expert and can handle a bit of chop. For everyone else, it's a quiet time. Keep hoping for a change in the wind.
Rusty.
