The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s happening at H-Reef over the next couple of weeks.
First off, the first week and a half is a total bust. The wind is hammering from the east and east-northeast at 12 to 15 mph, blowing straight across the reef, creating a nasty cross-chop. The swell is there, running 4 to 6 ft, all short-period windswell of 7 to 9 seconds, with moderate wave energy. But the conditions are just plain poor. It’s a no-go from Sunday the 23rd right through to Thursday the 3rd of September. Water temp is around 80°F, which is average for the time of year.
We finally see a glimmer of hope around Wednesday the 2nd of September. The swell picks up to 7 ft from the east-northeast, but the period is still a short 8 seconds and the wind is still cross. It’s only marginal. That continues through to Friday the 4th, with a bit of longer-period groundswell (13 seconds) showing up Friday afternoon, but the wind turns cross-onshore and it’s choppy.
The one true standout, the only window worth paddling out for, is the weekend of the 6th and 7th of September. On Sunday the 6th, we’re looking at a solid 8 ft swell from the NE with an 11-second period – that’s real groundswell energy. The combined energy is strong. The wind is a light north-easterly at 6 mph, just cross-onshore, but with those light breezes it’ll be clean with just small ripples. For a reef break, that long-period NE swell will line up beautifully. But listen, at 8 ft, this is expert territory only. Beginners, stay on the sand. The crowd factor says "sometimes," so expect a few keen locals.
Monday the 7th drops to a more manageable 5 ft from the ENE, with the wind getting even lighter from the north-northeast at 3 mph – almost glassy. Still only marginal, but it’s the best of the second week.
So, the bottom line: the first week is a total loss. Don’t waste your time. The only real chance is Sunday the 6th and Monday the 7th of September. Sunday has the size and power for the big dogs, Monday might be a little more forgiving for the strong intermediates. It’s not a classic forecast, but for this spot, you gotta be patient.
Rusty, out.
