Alright, Rusty here again. Let's talk about H-Reef for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a tough stretch. The first week is pretty much a bust. We’ve got persistent cross-shore wind—some days a gentle breeze, others a fresh breeze—hitting this exposed reef. You’ll see swell sizes up to 7ft early on, but with that wind it’s all chopped up and messy. There’s energy in the water, but the quality stinks.
We start Saturday the 11th with some clouds and a solid 6ft ENE swell at 7 seconds, but the east wind at 16 mph keeps it cross-shore and rough. Sunday the 12th is a bit bigger—7ft ENE on the morning—but the same story. The water is 79°, right about normal, so at least it’s warm.
That pattern holds through Wednesday the 16th, where we drop to a tiny 1ft WNW swell on Thursday morning, and the east wind picks up to 19 mph on the afternoon, making it lumpy. Not a single session in that first week is worth it.
The second week offers a tiny glimmer, but it’s not a sure thing. Monday the 20th morning sees a 3ft swell with an 18-second period from the east—that’s a super long period groundswell. The energy is up there, and by the afternoon it’s really strong. This could produce some lines, but at H-Reef, a reef break, that long-period swell with cross-shore wind can break straight and fast. The wind stays moderate cross-shore at 12-16 mph from the ENE, so it’s a marginal call. Worth a look if you’re advanced and don’t mind the crowd that sometimes shows up. Tuesday the 21st is similar—long period, lots of energy, still cross-shore wind.
After that, from Wednesday the 22nd, the period drops, the energy fades, and we’re back to poor conditions through the end on Sunday the 26th.
So the only window is that Monday-Tuesday in the second week (20th-21st of July). The long-period groundswell brings some punch, but that wind is a spoiler. Check back in a few days—forecasts shift, and it never stays flat forever.
Rusty.
