Table - best surf conditions forecast for H-Reef over the next 16 days.
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s break down H-Reef for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a tough bout for paddle surfing. The swell is hanging around, but the wind is a constant pain. We’ve got a solid 16-day window of onshore or cross-shore breezes, mostly from the E and ENE. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.
The first recommendation doesn’t roll in until the 21st of July, a Tuesday morning. That’s a full 13-day gap of “poor surf conditions” with the wind locked in from the E or ENE at 12 to 16 mph. The swell ticks along, with heights between 4 ft and 7 ft, but it’s all short-period windswell of 6 to 8 seconds, with moderate combined wave energy (between 214 and 597). The cross-chop from the wind just ruins the surface – it’s a mess.
The only glimmer in the whole run is on the 21st of July. Tuesday morning brings a swell of 5 ft from the ENE, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 594 (moderate), and the wind drops to a light breeze of 9 mph. The forecast shifts from “poor” to “marginal.” It’s still a cross-shore wind, but lighter, so there’s a slight chance of a clean-ish wave. The afternoon slides back into moderate breeze and rain showers, so the morning is your only shot.
The standouts? There isn’t really a standout session here. On the 21st morning, H-Reef is a fairly consistent reef break, exposed to the NNE swell direction, which is close to the optimum. The break is for advanced surfers only, and it can get crowded sometimes. The 5 ft swell is manageable for experienced paddlers, but the short period (8 seconds) won’t give you much power or shape. The water is average for the season.
For a 16-day window, this is a long, dry stretch. The setup is more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, given the persistent cross-shore winds and moderate swell energy. If you’re desperate, the 21st morning is your best bet, but keep expectations low.
Rusty.
