The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get straight into it.

We’ve got a solid 16-day window ahead but, to be honest, it’s a tough slog for the first few weeks. There’s one break on the cards, and it’s a bit of a bum steer for most of the run. We start the forecast period on Saturday, August 8th, and it’s pretty grim from the get-go. The first solid lump of swell doesn’t show until Monday the 10th, but even then, the wind’s a mess. The overall pattern is a long stretch of poor surf with cross-shore winds and dirty conditions.

The only spot in the mix is German Sunset Break. For the vast majority of the first 16 days, the surf here is flat, tiny, or sloppy. The wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, with moderate to fresh breeze making things choppy. There’s a real tease on Monday, August 10th, when the swell jumps to 5 ft and the combined energy hits a moderate 454, but it’s coming from the west with a short 9-second period, and the wind is still a fresh cross-shore, so it’s going to be lumpy and ugly. Not one for the quiver. The water temp is just average for the time of year, nothing out of the ordinary to report there.

The rest of the first week and into the second is a washout. From the 11th through the 20th, the swell height barely scrapes 1 ft, and the energy is way down in the two-digit and low double-digit doldrums (7 to 28 is common). You’re looking at a real dry spell of about 10 days where there’s basically nothing worth paddling out for. The wind does go cross-off a few times later in the second week (around the 15th and 15th, and again on the 21st), making things clean, but with swell of just 1 ft, you’d be chasing ankle-biters.

The one tiny glimmer is right at the very end. On Saturday, August 22nd, we get a glassy morning with the wind going calm. The swell is still a knee-high 0.7 ft from the west, and the energy is a measly 4, so it’s not a session. But on Sunday, the 23rd, there’s a 1 ft bump from the north with a clean, cross-off wind. That’s the best we get – a clean but tiny window.

So, to call a standout here is tough. Nothing is a standout for quality, but if you absolutely have to get wet, the cleanest conditions of the whole 16 days are on Sunday, August 23rd at German Sunset Break. The swell is tiny (1 ft from the north), but the wind is clean. You won’t be going big, but it’s a paddle at least. Bear in mind this break is listed as consistent but suitable for beginners, so if you’re just learning, this is your window. Crowds are sometimes expected here, so you might see a few other folks out.

Hang in there, it’s a flat spell, but it won’t last forever.

Rusty.
