The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the Erie region.
To be straight with you, this is a rough run. The next 16 days are looking like a real drought for decent surf. There’s a big gap of nothing from now until the morning of the 23rd of August, and even then, it’s not a pretty picture. We’ve got a few days with some swell, but the wind is a total mess – it’s almost always cross-onshore, and occasionally fresh, making things lumpy and choppy. The water temp is a real standout though, sitting at 77°F on the 22nd, which is a whopping 5°F warmer than average for this time of year. That’s very unusual.
The only time we see any real wave energy is on the 23rd and 24th of August. The combined energy of all swells directed at Erie peaks at 152 on the morning of the 23rd, which is only moderate energy. The swell comes from the NW at 5ft, but with a short period of just 6 seconds. That’s weak, wind-affected junk. The wind is a fresh cross-onshore at 19 mph, so it’s going to be a messy, lumpy paddle. Nothing to get excited about. By the afternoon of the 24th, the energy drops to 71 and the swell is down to 4ft. The rest of the week is flat with no energy to speak of, and while the wind does go light or cross-off, there’s simply no swell to ride.
Come the first week of September, we’re looking at a flat spell. The wind is all over the place, often cross-off or light, but there’s no wave energy. The 3rd of September morning has a glassy moment, but with zero swell, it’s a complete washout. For a lake like Erie, this kind of dead run is pretty normal. Don’t hold your breath, and keep the board in the car for when the forecast changes.
Rusty.
