The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – the outlook for Erie is a tough one to write. We’re looking at a pretty long stretch of flat or near-flat conditions, so don’t be in a rush to grab your board.
Right now, we’re coming off a bit of a pulse that was messy. Sunday the 23rd saw some chest-high swell around 5 ft from the NW, but it was a short-period, wind-affected mess with a stiff 22 mph WNW cross-onshore. The combined energy was only 131 (moderate), and it was just lumpy, bumpy, and not worth the drive.
Monday the 24th is more of the same, with waist-high stuff around 4 ft and still on the cross-onshore wind. We drop off a cliff after that. By Tuesday the 25th we’re down to tiny, knee-high waves at 1.0 ft with a period of just 3 seconds – that’s almost no energy at all (combined energy of 2). From Wednesday the 26th right through to Monday the 7th of September, it’s essentially flat. There are some beautiful glassy mornings and clean conditions in there, but with zero swell to surf, it doesn't matter. Wednesday the 26th afternoon is glassy, zero wind, but zero waves.
The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing to write home about. For any beginner thinking about it, even the small bump we had was over 5 ft and onshore, so it wasn't beginner-friendly.
The setup at Lake Erie is a lake, not the ocean, so we rely on very specific wind and fetch patterns. This stretch of flatness is pretty normal for the area when the wind doesn’t cooperate. There’s just nothing on the cards to get excited about. If you’re a kitesurfer, a few of those afternoons with a cross-onshore breeze and some lump might be of interest, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a blank run. Hang tight, forecasts can change.
Rusty.
