The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’.
Well, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it—this is a tough one. For the entire 16-day outlook, there’s just nothing doing. The first record kicks off on Monday, September 14, but don’t get your hopes up. We’ve got a run of nearly two weeks here with zilch in the way of rideable surf. There are a few days with tiny scraps of wave energy, but honestly, nothing that’s worth paddling out for. The whole stretch is basically a flat spell.
Let’s break it down. On Monday the 14th, there’s a tiny bump of 2 ft from the north with a 4-second period—weak, short-period junk with a combined energy of just 19. That’s not enough to push a leaf. The wind is cross-onshore at 12 mph in the morning, making it choppy. Afternoon goes glassy but the swell drops to 1 ft and energy plummets to 2. It’s dead.
Tuesday the 15th and Wednesday the 16th? Nothing on the charts. Clean winds but zero swell. Thursday the 17th afternoon sees a tiny 2 ft from the north with a 4-second period, energy at 6, but it’s glassy. Still, that’s not surf, that’s a ripple.
Friday the 18th morning has 3 ft from the north-northeast at 5 seconds, energy up to 24. That’s the biggest bump in the whole period, but 24 combined energy is still weak. Cross-shore wind at 12 mph keeps it messy. Not worth the drive.
From Saturday the 19th all the way through to Tuesday the 29th of September, it’s a total blank. Zero swell, zero wave energy. The wind does go offshore a few times—like on the 22nd with a fresh 19 mph offshore breeze—but there’s no swell to groom. It’s just clean and flat.
Water temp at Erie is sitting at 74°, which is 6° warmer than normal for this time of year—that’s a big anomaly. Unusually warm for September, but it doesn’t help when there’s no surf.
Bottom line: if you’re looking for waves, you’re out of luck. The lake is flat as a pancake. This kind of dry spell happens here. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing on the horizon worth chasing.
Rusty.
