The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be honest with you – this is a rough stretch. Looking at the next 16 days for Erie, there’s next to nothing to get excited about. The first real pulse of energy that’s even worth talking about doesn’t arrive until Sunday the 23rd, and even then, it’s more of a “maybe get the log out” kind of day than anything else. We’ve got a big dead zone before that.
From now through Saturday the 22nd, it’s a wasteland. The swell is flat to tiny, with the odd bump showing up on Wednesday morning the 19th – a weak 3ft from the WNW at a short 5 seconds. The combined energy is a measly 35, which is just sad. The wind is a messy cross-shore with thunderstorms lurking, so you’re better off doing something else. That little knee-high dribble disappears by the afternoon, and then it’s dead flat until the weekend.
The one day that’s worth a look is Sunday the 23rd of August at Erie. We get a clean 3ft swell from the northwest, still with a short period of 5 seconds, but the wind is straight offshore in the morning. That’s a game-changer for this lake spot. The combined energy is still weak (32), but with that offshore breeze, the surface will be glassy, and a little 3ft wave with push can be fun on a bigger board. It won’t be world-class, but it’s the only window that’s even rideable. The water is sitting at 77°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – over 2°F warmer – so at least you won’t need a wetsuit.
After that Sunday burst, it fades fast. Monday the 24th drops back to 2ft and smaller, and from Tuesday the 25th all the way through to the 3rd of September, the forecast is a solid zero. No swell, just clean but flat conditions or onshore junk. Winds swing around but there’s simply no energy. If you’re a local paddler, this is a typical summer flat spell. It tends not to stay poor forever, but for now, the only chance you’ve got is Sunday morning.
So, if you’re keen, hit it Sunday. It’s a one-day affair.
Rusty.
