The Lowdown
Alright, let’s be real here – this is gonna be a tough one. The entire 16-day stretch is basically flat. There’s nothing even worth paddling out for. The first hint of any rideable surf doesn't appear until September 13th and even then it’s a poor 2ft from the west with a short period of 4 seconds and a cross-on wind – that’s a choppy, messy no-go. After that, we see tiny pulses here and there – a 1ft on the 14th afternoon (glassy, at least), a 1ft on the 16th morning – but nothing that breaks 3ft, and the energy levels are laughable, with combined swell energy barely hitting double digits (10, 30, 2... you get the picture). The waves are small, weak, and short-period. Most days don't even have a swell.
For Erie (Lake Erie), the water is sitting at 74°F which is much warmer than normal – that’s over 5°F above average, very unusual for mid-September. It’ll feel like a warm bath, but you won’t need a wetsuit to get skunked.
If you’re desperate, the best shot is Monday morning the 14th – a 3ft from the north, 5-second period, cross-on wind. Combined energy is 30 – weak. It’s poor surf conditions. Honestly, with how little is going on, the kite surfers might get more out of the stronger winds later in the month, like that 25 mph offshore on the 22nd. For paddle surfing, it’s a blank run. This area just doesn't see much, and this stretch is a prime example.
