The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a grim outlook for the Erie region right now. We’re looking at a long stretch of flat, poor surf conditions that’s going to test your patience. The water, by the way, is sitting at 76°F currently, which is a whopping 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s really unusual, feels like bathwater for a Lake Erie summer.
The first few days are a total write-off. Friday the 17th is flat with a light cross-onshore breeze. Saturday the 18th brings a tiny bit of swell, around 2ft to 3ft from the west, but it’s a short-period, weak windswell (combined energy only 25 to 64) and the wind is a fresh, lumpy cross-shore mess. No good. Sunday the 19th is even worse – a tiny 2ft swell with a 4-second period, blown out by a moderate cross-onshore wind. After that, we hit a dead zone. From Monday the 20th right through to the end of the month, there’s simply no surf on offer. We’re talking a solid 10-day gap with zero wave energy (0 combined energy) and mostly glassy or light wind conditions that would be perfect if there was a wave to ride, but there isn’t.
There is one tiny blip worth mentioning. On Wednesday the 22nd, the early morning shows a 5ft swell from the northwest with a 6-second period. That’s short period, and the combined energy is 156 – moderate. But the wind is a fresh 22 mph onshore breeze, so it’ll be lumpy and messy. This is only for experts, and honestly, the quality is still rated poor. For a beginner, anything over 5ft is too big, but the wind makes it a struggle for anyone.
The long-range into the first week of August shows nothing but flat, clean conditions. The wind is often light or offshore, but with zero swell, it’s just a lake. Given the lack of consistent surf here, this kind of blank run is unfortunately normal for the area. The setup is more interesting for a kiteboarder than a paddler when the wind is up, but right now, there’s nothing to ride.
Best bet? Forget the board for the next two weeks. The forecasts can change, but this is a long, dry spell.
Rusty.
