The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s look at what we’ve got coming up for our local area.

First off, it’s a tough outlook. The next 16 days are showing a total flat spell, with no real surf to speak of. The first hint of a wave barely registers on Thursday morning, August 13th, with a tiny 0.7ft west swell. That’s pretty much it for the whole run.

On that Thursday morning, the water temperature is 77°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – over 5° above average, so you’ll feel that bathwater warmth. But with a combined energy of just 2 and a period of 3 seconds, there is zero power behind it. Wind is light offshore from the northwest at 3 mph early, so it would be glassy, but there is nothing to ride. The spot, Erie, is exposed to the west, which is the optimum direction, but with no swell it doesn’t matter.

Friday the 14th offers a tiny 0.7ft north-northeast swell in the afternoon, but that’s it – combined energy of 1. Saturday the 15th sees a 1.0ft northeast swell, but again, we’re talking about ankle-biters. Sunday the 16th afternoon has a 1ft west swell with combined energy of 4. Monday the 17th morning brings the biggest of the lot – a 2ft north swell, but with a period of only 4 seconds, it’s just wind chop and the combined energy is a feeble 12. On top of that, the wind is cross-onshore. Not worth paddling out.

After Monday the 17th, the guidance shows nothing but zeros – no wave height, no energy. There’s a string of glassy or clean days, like Tuesday the 18th morning, Thursday the 20th morning, and Friday the 21st, with calm or light offshore winds. But without a wave, it’s just a flat lake. Even the afternoon of Sunday the 23rd and the 28th are dead calm.

Look, for this area, a run this blank isn’t totally unusual, but it’s still a tough stretch. If you’re desperate for a paddle, you might get a tiny knee-high ripple on Monday morning the 17th, but that’s it. Keep an eye on the forecasts – they can change. Right now, there’s nothing to recommend.
