The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you about the Lake Erie scene for the next couple of weeks. I've looked at the charts for our region, and honestly, it's a tough stretch. We start off with a big fat zero on the energy scale, so don't even bother paddling out just yet. The water is sitting at a balmy 74°, which is a solid 6° warmer than normal for this time of year – that's a very unusual anomaly, making for some pleasant sessions when the waves finally show up, but it won't save the flat spells.

The first real pulse of energy shows up early on Friday, September 18th. We're looking at a small, weak system pushing in a 3 ft swell from the NNE with a short, gutless 4-second period. The combined energy is barely registering (22), so it's more of a ripple than a ride. The wind will be cross-shore from the NE at 12 mph, throwing a chop on it. If you're desperate, you might find a knee-high lump at the usual sandbars.

The best and really only standout window in this whole outlook is on Sunday, September 20th. We finally get a bit of push overnight. By the morning, a 4 ft swell from the WNW is hitting the lake, with a slightly better 6-second period. The combined energy actually breaks into triple digits at 100 (moderate wave energy). It’s still small and short period, but with the NE cross-wind at 16 mph, it won't be clean. This is the pick of a very lean bunch for the next 10 days or so.

After that, the energy fades. We get a few scraps of swell dying down on Monday, September 21st (2-3 ft range), and then it goes completely dead for a long stretch. From Tuesday the 22nd all the way through to Tuesday the 30th of September, the energy meter is flatlined at 0. Plenty of days with clean, glassy conditions and offshore winds, but without any swell to push them, it's a lake. There's simply no wave to ride.

So, there you have it. One small window of marginal surf around the 20th, and then a long, flat spell. It’s not ideal, but for Lake Erie, these blank runs are pretty normal. Forecasts can change, so don't lose all hope.

Rusty.
