The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you – this is a tough one for the Great Lakes. We're looking at a 16-day window that's going to be a real test of patience.
Right off the bat, the water is sitting at a balmy 77°F, which is a good 5°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That's pretty unusual; you won't need a wetsuit, that's for sure. But the warmth doesn't translate to waves.
The first real action we see is tiny and weak. Tuesday morning the 14th, we might see some 1ft waves from the WSW at Erie, but the wind is a messy cross-shore at 15 mph, and the energy is pathetic (4). It's a cross-chop and not worth paddling out for. That pattern pretty much holds through the week. We get a sliver of hope on Friday the 17th afternoon with a glassy, calm session, but the swell is a measly 0.7ft with no energy (1). It's a pond.
Saturday the 18th offers the best of a bad lot. The wind goes light cross-offshore from the SSW at 9 mph, which will keep it clean. The swell is still only 2ft from the west, with a period of 4 seconds, but the energy is at least in the double digits (9). It's clean, but tiny. Don't expect much.
After that, the entire second week dries up completely. From Sunday the 19th all the way through to Tuesday the 28th, the combined energy reads a flat zero. There is simply no surf to be had. The wind is all over the place – glassy, cross-off, onshore, strong breezes – but without a swell, it doesn't matter.
Honestly, there's nothing to highlight as a standout. The best you can hope for is a clean, flat session on Saturday the 18th for a paddle. If you're desperate for a wave, wait for a change in the forecast. A blank run like this is pretty normal for the Lake Erie region when the patterns lock up. Keep your eyes on the charts.
Rusty.
