The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's just say it how it is: Erie is in a proper flat spell. The next couple weeks look pretty grim on the surf front. This is the only game in town, so we're stuck with it.
First up, the water here is about 77°, which is nearly 5° warmer than usual for August. That's a big deal, a very warm lake. But that's where the good news ends. The surf on Monday the 17th is a non-event. Tuesday the 18th is completely flat, and the little slop on Tuesday afternoon with a westerly wind won't give you anything. The energy is pitiful, down there at 1 or 2. It's a lake, and it's doing its best impression of a mirror.
We get a tiny pulse on Wednesday the 19th – maybe 2ft and a touch more energy (24) – but the cross-shore wind will make it a bumpy mess. From Thursday through the weekend, it's a total blank. Even when the wind goes light offshore for a morning on the 22nd, there's no swell to make it worthwhile. It’s just clean and empty.
The following week is more of the same, a dead stretch of lake. No swell, no period, no energy at all. We're just hoping for a change in the pattern, but it's looking like a long haul. This kind of a dry run is pretty typical for the area, so we just have to be patient.
For any wave riders, there's nothing to get excited about. If the wind picks up strong, it might be a kitesurfer's paradise, but for a paddle surfer, it's a washout. The long-range forecast is just... flat. I’ll keep an eye on it, but don't hold your breath.
That's all from me. This is Rusty, signing off.
