The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, and let me tell you, it's a tough stretch ahead for the Lake Erie shores. We're looking at a solid 16-day window, but honest to goodness, the first couple of weeks are pretty grim. There's a big gap at the start with nothing worth paddling out for.

The first real glimmer of hope doesn't show up until Thursday, September 10th. Up until then, we've got days of tiny, short-period windswell with nasty cross-shore winds – a real recipe for frustration, not a good wave.

Alright, so Thursday the 10th. Erie (Lake Erie) wakes up with a pulse. We're talking a northwesterly groundswell, pushing about 5ft on the morning and 4ft in the afternoon. The period is a pretty average 6 seconds, so it's not got that long-period grunt, but the combined energy finally climbs into the moderate range (132 on the morning, 115 on the afternoon). That's the only time in the whole outlook we see any real power. The catch? The wind is howling onshore from the WNW/NW at 15 mph. That's going to chop it up something fierce. It's a session for the hardcore only, maybe more of a kitesurfing breeze than a clean paddle, but it's the only wave in town. Water temp is a balmy 75°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won't freeze waiting for a set.

After that, it's a dust bowl again. From Friday the 11th all the way through to Sunday the 20th of September, it's flat. Zero swell. Zilch. Nada. We get a few glassy mornings on Tuesday the 8th and Saturday the 19th, but without any swell, that's just a nice day to be on the lake, not to surf. There's simply no other options in the forecast.

So, if you're desperate, Thursday the 10th is your one and only shot, and it's a messy one. Otherwise, put the board away and wait for the next system. This is one of those blank runs that's pretty normal for the Lake when the pattern settles in.

Rusty.
