The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gonna be straight with you – this 16-day window for Erie is a tough one. We’ve got a big, long flat spell on the horizon, so let’s get into it.
The overall pattern is a quick flash of small, junky swell on Wednesday the 22nd, and then a whole lot of nothing. Seriously, that’s the story. We’ve got a gap in any real surf from Thursday the 23rd all the way through to the end of the forecast on Thursday the 6th of August. That’s a solid two weeks of flatness.
The only game in town is Wednesday, July 22nd. The morning brings a 4ft swell from the NW, but it’s short period stuff at 6 seconds, and the northwest wind is howling at 16 mph onshore. The energy is a weak 103, and the water is sitting at 76°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. The reports say “poor surf conditions,” and I’m not gonna argue. It’s messy, choppy, and not worth paddling out for. The afternoon drops to a tiny 2ft with even less period, and a cross-onshore breeze. It’s a write-off.
After that, from Thursday morning onward, it’s a parade of zeros. No swell, no energy, just flat calm or wind chop. Look, Erie is a lake, and it’s known for these long flat spells. It’s just the way it goes. The forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about. If you’ve got a kite, the wind picks up a bit on the 5th and 6th of August with a strong breeze, but for a paddle surfer? Hang up the wetsuit for a couple of weeks.
Rusty.
