The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for Erie.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next 16 days are a tough read for surfers. We’ve got a long, dry spell coming. From the morning of the 21st right through to the afternoon of the 26th, there’s barely a ripple to get excited about, and then after a tiny blip on the 26th, we’re looking at another massive gap with no real surf until the 5th of August. That’s a lot of flat water to stare at.
The only real chance to get wet comes from the morning of the 21st through the afternoon of the 22nd. The best of a bad bunch is Tuesday morning, July 21st. The water’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 76°F.
We’ve got a west swell rolling in at 3ft, but the period is a weak 6 seconds. The combined energy is low (53), so it’s not going to have much push. The wind is a cross-offshore from the SSW, but it’s blowing a near gale at 34 mph. That’s a lot of wind for a little wave. It’s going to be a messy, blown-out session. The afternoon sees the wind drop to 22 mph, still cross-off, with a 3ft swell, but the energy is still weak (79). It’s not great, but it’s all we’ve got.
Wednesday, July 22nd offers a slight bump in size. The morning brings a 4ft swell from the NW, but the wind is onshore and strong at 16 mph. The energy is moderate (115), but the onshore wind will chop it up. The afternoon clears up, but the wind stays cross-onshore, and the swell drops to 4ft.
After that, it’s a ghost town. We get a tiny 1.0ft pulse on the afternoon of Sunday the 26th, but it’s not worth paddling out for. The next time we see any swell at all is the 5th of August, which is a full two weeks away. Forecasts can change, and it tends not to stay this poor for long, but right now, this is a solid “no-go” for paddle surfing.
If you’re desperate, the only spot to even consider is Erie itself. Just don’t expect much.
Rusty.
