The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. I’ve had a good look at the charts for our little stretch of lake, and I’m calling it as I see it.

Right now, and for the next two and a half weeks, it’s a total write-off for any decent surf. The lake is flat. There’s no swell energy to speak of – the combined energy is a big fat zero (0) for most of the run. We’re looking at a solid 16-day gap with no real surf on offer. The first record for Monday the 7th already shows nothing, and it just doesn’t get any better from there.

We get a tiny blip of life on Wednesday the 9th, with a weak 3-foot swell from the west, but that’s coming in at a short period of 6 seconds on a cross-shore wind. The energy is still pathetically low (52). Honestly, that’s more of a wash than a wave. After that, it’s back to a whole lot of nothing. The rest of the week into the next is just clear skies, some wind, but zero swell. Even the glassy calm on Friday the 18th doesn’t help because there’s nothing to ride.

The water temp is about what you’d expect for this time of year, so no surprises there. But for surfing? There’s just nothing to get excited about. The only thing that *might* get a little interesting is if the wind really cranks from the west, but with the swell being so pitiful, this setup looks far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

Don't lose hope, though. Around here, a flat spell doesn’t always last forever. The long-range forecasts are always a bit of a gamble. I’ll keep an eye on it, but for now, maybe give the board a wax and a rest.

Rusty.
