The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. The honest truth is, we’re looking at a pretty grim stretch ahead for Erie. The next 16 days are basically a write-off for any decent surf. There's a real gap here; we’ve got nothing worth paddling out for from now until the end of the forecast period on August 3rd. It’s one of those flat spells that can be pretty normal for the area, so don’t throw your board in the attic just yet.

The only time we see any energy at all is around Wednesday the 22nd of July. A small northwesterly swell pushes in, with heights around 5 ft, coming from the NW. It’s a short-period windswell at 6 seconds, so it’s going to be pretty weak and messy. The combined swell energy hits 142, which is moderate, but with the wind howling onshore from the NW at 15 mph, the quality is going to be poor. This is a beach setup, and with that wind and chop, it honestly looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.

Before that, on Tuesday the 21st, we get a small pulse from the west at 3 ft, but with a strong 19 mph cross-shore wind, it’s just lumpy and ugly. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, which is a small comfort, I guess.

The rest of the fortnight is just flat. Glassy mornings on the 24th and 26th of July, but with no swell to speak of, it’s just a lake. Conditions are clean, but there’s nothing to ride. We’ve got a few days of light cross-offshore winds on the 25th, again, flat. It’s a long wait.

So, to sum it up: there are no standout sessions here. The best you can hope for is a poor-to-marginal wave on Wednesday the 22nd. Don’t plan your week around it. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a bust.

Rusty.
