Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here. Let me tell you what we’re looking at, straight up.
Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with you – this is a tough period for surf. For the next 16 days, from now all the way through July 18th, we've got a massive dry spell. There’s really nothing worth paddling out for. The only break on the map is Erie, and it just isn’t cooperating.
Looking at the first few days, July 3rd through the 5th, we’ve got tiny, weak swell – we’re talking maybe 1.0ft to 1ft at best, and the period is a pathetic 3 to 4 seconds. That’s just wind chop, not surf. The combined wave energy is almost nothing, barely 2 to 4 units. The wind is mostly cross or cross-on, keeping things choppy and messy. It’s just poor surf conditions across the board.
The water temperature at Erie is sitting at 74°F, which is a solid 5°F warmer than what’s normal for this time of year. That’s way warmer than usual, like swimming in a bath, but it doesn’t help the waves one bit.
From July 6th onward, it gets even quieter. Most of the time there’s no swell height recorded at all, and the energy drops to zero. We see a few glassy mornings – like the morning of July 5th and the afternoon of July 6th – but with no waves to speak of, glassy conditions just mean a flat lake. A couple of afternoons around July 16th show clean conditions with light offshore winds, but again, there’s no swell to ride.
This kind of blank run is sadly normal for the area when there’s no swell pushing in. It’s a real bummer. If you’re hoping for anything, you’re gonna have to wait and hope the forecasts change. For now, there’s just no surf on offer.
Rusty.
