The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s talk about this next stretch.
Alright folks, I gotta be straight with you – looking out over the whole 16-day window for Erie, it’s a pretty tough stretch. We’ve got a big, long lull coming. Right now, there’s basically nothing rideable, and that quiet spell is set to run for a good number of days. Most of the time, the combined wave energy is sitting at zero, and even the few tiny pulses we see are just not doing the job. For this area, a blank run like this isn’t all that unusual, but it doesn’t make it any less frustrating when you're itching for a paddle.
The very first hint of something happens on the morning of the 28th of July. We get a tiny spike of energy, around 3 ft of swell coming from the WNW. It’s only got a combined energy of 37, so it’s weak, and the period is short at 5 seconds. That’s not going to produce anything with shape or power. The wind is light and cross-shore, so it won't be a complete washing machine, but the waves will just be soft and crumbly. Honestly, not worth getting wet for. That little bump fades fast, and it’s back to zeros after that.
There is an interesting moment on the morning of the 4th of August. The winds go glassy, which is a beautiful thing. But there is absolutely no swell to go with it. It’s a tease. Then on the 5th of August, the wind really cranks up from the WSW at 19-22 mph, but it’s still no swell. If you see that much wind and no waves, that’s more of a kite-surfing setup than anything to do with a surfboard.
Overall, there is no standout session here. The water temperature is about 75°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s the only good news. Hang in there, forecasts can change, but right now, this is a solid period to give the beach a miss.
