The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one. The next 16 days are looking pretty grim for a paddle. We’ve got a big gap at the start with no real surf on offer, and the outlook doesn't get much better. Let’s walk through it.
The only window of any kind is on Monday and Tuesday, August 24th and 25th, at Erie. Monday morning brings a 5ft swell from the WNW, but with a short period of 6 seconds and a fresh cross-onshore wind, it’s going to be lumpy and choppy. The combined wave energy is moderate at 203, but the conditions are just poor. The water is much warmer than normal for this time of year, with a temperature of 76°, which is a big anomaly. Monday afternoon sees the swell drop to 4ft, still choppy. Tuesday morning has a tiny bit of knee-high swell, 1ft from the NW, but it’s basically nothing.
After that, it’s a total blank. From Wednesday, August 26th, all the way through to Tuesday, September 8th, there is zero surfable energy. We’re talking 14 days with no waves at all. The wind charts show clean conditions at times, and even some offshore flow, but without any swell, it’s just flat water.
So, the honest truth? There are no standout options here. The best on offer is Monday morning, August 24th, at Erie, but that’s like saying the best piece of a bad sandwich. The swell is almost 5ft, but it’s short-period junk, and the wind is wrecking it. Still, if you absolutely have to get wet, that’s your only shot. For everyone else, leave the boards at home. This is one of those stretches where the lake just goes quiet. It won’t stay this way forever, but for now, it’s a waiting game.
Stay patient.
