The Lowdown

Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s happening on the water. This is a tough one.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper paddle. The first bit of surf worth mentioning doesn't even show up until Tuesday, July 28th. Before that, from now through Monday, July 27th, the swell is essentially flat or ankle-slapping junk. You’re looking at a dead zone, a total write-off for anyone with a surfboard.

So, come Tuesday, July 28th, we finally get a little pulse. Erie (Lake Erie) is the only spot on the board, and it’s a bit of a tease. That early morning on the 28th, wind is out of the NW at 3 mph, which is a light onshore flow, and the swell is a weak 3 ft out of the WNW. The energy is still low, about 48 (combined energy of all swells directed here), and it’s a short, weak period swell. Things improve a little in the afternoon. The wind swings to NNE at 3 mph, turning it glassy. The swell bumps up to 4 ft from the NW, and the energy climbs to 63. It’s surfable, but it’s ordinary. For a lake break, this is about as good as it’s going to get in this window, but it’s hardly a standout.

After that little blink on Tuesday, it’s back to the same old story. Wednesday, July 29th, the wind picks up to 12 mph from the NNE, making it choppy and cross-onshore, ruining the 4 ft swell. The rest of the week and into the first week of August is a dust bowl of flatness and poor conditions. The water temp is sitting at 74°, which is about normal for this time of year.

There are no real standouts here. The best you’ll get is a couple of hours on Tuesday afternoon, July 28th, if you're desperate for a splash. It’s small, it’s weak, and it’s on a lake, so don’t expect any power. For the rest of the 16-day run, it’s a blank canvas. This kind of long, quiet stretch is unfortunately pretty normal for the area. Keep your board waxed and your eye on the sky, but don’t hold your breath.

Rusty.
