The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’ve gotta be straight with you – we’re looking at a pretty grim stretch ahead. The next 16 days are basically a write-off for any decent surf. I’ve scanned the whole forecast and there’s just nothing to get excited about. We’ve got a long gap right from the start with no real surf on offer, and it just doesn’t get any better.
Let’s talk about the only spot on the radar, Erie (Lake Erie). The water is sitting at 77°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – about 4°F above average, so that’s noticeable. But that’s where the good news ends.
Through the first week, we’re looking at tiny, weak waves. The swell is barely there, with the combined energy of all swells staying weak, often in the single digits (5 to 14). On Saturday the 8th, we’ve got a 1 ft swell from the WSW with a short period of 4 seconds and a cross-shore wind of 16 mph making it choppy and poor. Sunday morning the 9th is glassy with a 0.7 ft swell from the north, but it’s so small it’s not worth a paddle. The rest of the week is a mix of cross-shore and onshore breezes, with swell heights never getting above 2 ft and periods all under 5 seconds. Thursday the 13th morning has a clean cross-offshore wind, but it’s on a 2 ft, 4-second swell – still terrible.
From Friday the 14th all the way through to Sunday the 23rd, we’ve got zeros across the board for swell height, period, and energy. There’s nothing to ride. The wind is all over the place, but it doesn’t matter because there’s no wave. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on some of those windier days, but for us surfers, it’s a total bust.
Honestly, this is one of those blank runs that’s pretty normal for the lake. Nothing to do but wait for the forecasts to change. Keep the board waxed, but don’t hold your breath.
