The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Lake Erie has got cooking for us. I gotta be straight with you – the outlook for the next 16 days is about as flat as a pancake. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with no real surf to speak of. The only break on the radar is Erie, and it's exposed to a west swell, but we just aren't getting the juice.
We’ve got a gap right from the start. Conditions are poor straight away. There’s a tiny blip on Sunday, September 13th with some knee-high waves, but the energy is pathetic – only registering 8 for the combined swell energy. The period is short, and the wind is messy, cross-onshore. It’s not worth paddling out for.
Honestly, the whole run is a write-off. We see a bit of a spike in energy on Monday, September 14th morning when a small NNE swell pushes through at 2 ft, but it’s blown out with a strong cross-onshore wind from the north at 12 mph. That’s a no-go. The combined energy hits 22, but it’s weak and choppy.
After that, it’s just a long, slow fade into nothing. From the 18th of September all the way through to the 27th, the combined energy is a big fat zero. We’ve got glassy mornings and clean conditions here and there – like the afternoon of the 16th and the morning of the 25th – but with no swell to push through, it’s just a lake. A few of those days see strong offshore winds over 19 mph, which would be interesting for kite surfing if you’ve got a rig, but for a surfboard? Forget it.
If you’re a surfer on Lake Erie, this is one of those blank runs that happens. It’s normal for the area when the wind just doesn’t line up and the fetch is missing. Forecasts can always change, but right now, from now through the end of the month, save the gas. The best wave might be the one you get when you turn the tap on at home.
