The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you – this forecast for Lake Erie is a tough one. We're looking at a solid 16-day window, but the truth is, the first bit of any real surfable energy doesn't show up until Tuesday the 21st of July, and even then, it's a struggle.

The water is much warmer than normal right now, sitting at 76°, which is 4° above average for this time of year. That's notable, but it doesn't help the waves. We start with a gap of no real surf from today, Monday the 20th, through to early Tuesday morning. The best we can hope for in the whole run is a brief window on Wednesday the 22nd of July.

Tuesday the 21st of July kicks things off with a tiny 2ft swell from the WSW, but it's a short-period 5 seconds, and the wind is a strong 25 mph cross-offshore. The combined energy is weak (29). It's a messy start.

Wednesday the 22nd of July is the only day that even gets a pulse. We'll see a 5ft swell from the NW on Wednesday morning, with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (159). The wind is a stiff 16 mph onshore though, so it's going to be choppy and blown out. Honestly, the afternoon drops a little to 5ft, same wind, same poor conditions. This is a marginal setup at best.

After that, from Thursday the 23rd of July right through to the end of the forecast on Tuesday the 4th of August, we're looking at a long, flat stretch. The energy drops to zero. There will be some glassy mornings, like Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th, and even a few clean offshore days on the 31st of July and 2nd of August, but with no swell to speak of, it's just a flat lake.

The standout – if you can call it that – is the Wednesday the 22nd of July session. The swell is the biggest we'll see, but it's messy and short-period. With the onshore wind and beach break setup, this is honestly more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. The only other flicker is a tiny 1.0ft swell on the morning of Thursday the 23rd, but that's not worth paddling out for.

Look, it's a blank run. That's not unusual for the area in summer. The forecasts can change, but for now, it's a waiting game. Keep an eye on the lake, but don't get your hopes up.

Rusty.
