The Lowdown
Alright, let's get real. Rusty here, and the next couple of weeks are a proper drought. I'm not gonna sugarcoat it – the surf forecast is about as exciting as watching paint dry. We've got a whole lot of flatness, some weak little bumps, and mess.
First up, let's talk water temp. At Erie, it's 75°F, which is nearly 5° warmer than it should be for this time of year. That’s really unusual and a plus if you're in a pair of boardies.
So, starting on Wednesday the 9th: morning is a washout with rain showers, a weak 1ft bump out of the WSW with a period of 3 seconds. The energy is weak, just 4. The wind is cross-off but it's hopeless. The afternoon is worse with a thunderstorm risk and stronger cross-shore winds. Don't even bother.
Thursday the 10th and Friday the 11th are dead flat. Zero swell. Friday morning goes glassy, but with nothing to surf, it’s just a shiny pond. The weekend of the 12th and 13th follows suit – absolutely nothing. We are in a serious lull.
We get a tiny spark of life on Monday the 14th. The morning shows 3ft of swell from the NW, but the period is a weak 4 seconds and the energy is still low at 29. The wind is light and cross-off from the East, and it's clean. It's small, gutless, and barely surfable on a high-volume longboard. The afternoon drops back to 2ft with the same clean conditions but even less energy.
Then, the void returns. From Tuesday the 15th all the way through to Thursday the 24th, there is simply nothing. Some days are clean, even glassy, but the swell is a perfect zero. The wind will be messy on some days, and even the offshore breezes are wasted because there are no waves. This is a blank run, and it's more normal for the area than we'd like.
My honest take? There are no standout days. No real swell, no power, no period. If you are absolutely desperate, Monday the 14th morning is your only real shot, but you will be surfing a knee-high dribble with a short period. This is a day for the foamie.
This looks much more interesting for the kite surfers than us paddle surfers. There is simply not enough push for a proper ride. It's a tough stretch, but it tends not to stay this poor for long and the forecasts can change. I'll be watching, but for now, keep the board in the car.
Rusty.
