The Lowdown
Alright, surfers. Let’s get real about what’s happening at Erie.
Honestly, for the next 16 days, things are looking pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of flat or almost-flat conditions with nothing but onshore or cross-shore wind messing things up. There’s no good swell coming through that’s going to line up with the optimum west swell direction, and the few tiny pulses we see are just weak, short-period windswell that won't offer anything rideable. You’re looking at a lot of days with no surf at all.
Let’s break it down. Starting on Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th, we’ve got nothing. The wave energy is essentially zero. Tuesday the 21st shows a little bump – a 2ft to 2ft west-southwest and west swell – but with a short period of just 4 to 6 seconds and fresh cross-shore winds up to 19 mph, it’s going to be lumpy, messy, and not worth paddling out.
The closest we get to anything is Wednesday morning, July 22. A northwest swell pushes in at 5ft with a 6-second period. That gives us moderate combined wave energy of 200. The wind is out of the north-northwest, which is onshore here, and the wave comment just says "poor surf conditions." That 5ft will be a washing machine – choppy, blown-out, and only for the most desperate. It drops off fast to 5ft by the afternoon. After that, from Thursday the 23rd all the way through to Monday, August 3, we are looking at a massive blank run. Day after day of zeros in the energy column, frustrating glassy mornings with no swell, and cross-shore winds that do nothing but create wind ripples.
To be brutally honest, there’s no standout in this 16-day window. The lake is just not cooperating. For a lake that’s usually pretty fickle, this kind of dead run is more normal for the area when the wind and swell don’t align. If you’re desperate for a paddle, the Wednesday morning session on the 22nd at Erie is the only one with any size, but expect it to be a bumpy, onshore mess. The water is sitting at 76°F, which is *much warmer than normal* for this time of year – over 4°F warmer than average – so at least you won’t freeze while you’re sitting there waiting for nothing.
Keep your eyes on the forecast, but for now, I’d say save the wax for another week.
