The Lowdown
Alright, let me level with you. For Erie (Lake Erie), the next 16 days are looking pretty barren. There’s no real swell to get excited about, just a few tiny windows of marginal surf.
The only half-decent chance comes on Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th. Thursday morning, the 27th, you’ve got a weak 0.5m swell from the west, with a period of only 5 seconds – that’s short, weak windswell. Wind is cross, and the combined energy is a measly 11. That afternoon, it gets more cross-onshore and choppy, same tiny height but a 4-second period.
Friday the 28th is the closest thing to a "best bet." In the morning, there’s 0.3m from the north, still short period, energy at just 2. The afternoon on Friday finally goes glassy – dead calm wind – but you’re still stuck with that same 0.3m, 3-second period swell. Energy drops to 1. It’ll be clean, but barely a ripple to ride.
From Saturday the 29th of August all the way through to Tuesday the 10th of September, it’s a dead zone. Every session shows “poor surf conditions” with zero wave energy. That’s a long, flat stretch. For a lake spot like Erie that needs a good west swell, these quiet spells are pretty normal. The water temperature is right about average for the season, nothing weird going on.
So, no standouts here. If you absolutely need to get wet, Friday afternoon the 28th is your only shot – glassy water but next to no swell. Otherwise, put the board away and wait for a change in the weather patterns.
