The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get straight to it.
Truth is, looking at this 16-day window, it's a tough one for us. There's just nothing happening. The charts are showing a long, flat spell, and the few tiny ripples we get don't amount to anything worth paddling out for. The water temperature is sitting at 77.1°F here in Erie, which is running about 4.1°F warmer than what we'd normally expect for this time of year – that's a real standout, makes the lake feel more like a bath than our usual autumn cool-down.
For the first few days, there's a flicker of life on the afternoon of Sunday, the 16th of August. A tiny 1.3ft swell from the west with a short 4-second period and 12 mph cross-onshore winds. The combined energy is a weak 5, and conditions are choppy. Not your friend. A slightly better bump shows up on the morning of Monday, the 17th of August – a 2.3ft wave from the NNW with a 4-second period. The wind is onshore from the NW at 9 mph, but it's clean. Still, at that size and period, it's barely a ripple. The rest of that week and into the next is a write-off.
After the 19th of August, the swell completely shuts down. The combined energy drops to zero for days on end. We see some glassy conditions on the morning of Saturday, the 22nd of August, and some clean, offshore winds at the end of the month, but there is no wave to ride. You can't surf a glassy lake. It's a long flat spell from the 21st of August all the way through to the end of the 16-day window on the 31st of August. No standouts, no recommendations. For an exposed lake like Erie, this happens. When the wind goes quiet, the lake goes flat. It's just the reality of it. Keep an eye on the forecast; it won't stay blank forever.
