The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s going on with the Lake Erie scene. I gotta be straight with you – this 16-day stretch is looking like a flat spell for the most part. We’ve got a run of poor surf conditions across the board, and it’s gonna be a long wait between any kind of action.
Right off the bat, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The first record we get is for Saturday the 8th of August at Erie, and it’s just 2 feet of weak, short-period windswell. The combined energy is a paltry 14, and with a cross-on wind howling at 16 mph, it’s choppy and messy. Water temps are a touch warmer than normal at 77°F, about 4°F above average, so that’s nice if you’re just floating around, but not for surfing.
Sunday the 9th offers a tiny 0.7 foot northwest windswell with glassy conditions in the morning, but the energy is only 1. It’s barely a ripple. The rest of the first week into the second is a string of zeros, with the occasional 2 to 2 foot popping up from the west or northwest, but the period is short – 3 to 5 seconds – and the wind is almost always cross-on or choppy. The highest combined energy we see all period is a meager 16 on Monday the 10th afternoon.
After the 14th of August, it’s a total blank. From the 15th through to the 23rd, all the wave heights are dashes, meaning zero surf. That’s over a week of flatness. The wind does go glassy or cross-off a few times, but with no swell, it doesn’t matter.
There are no standouts in this window. Not a single day offers anything close to a recommendation. The best you could hope for is maybe a longboard and a prayer on the morning of the 9th, but honestly, you’d be better off checking the forecasts again later – things can change. For now, the Lake is taking a nap.
