The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for the Lake Erie region.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window is a tough one. We’re looking at a long stretch of flat or close-to-flat conditions, with only a couple of tiny blips of energy that won't really get the heart pumping. The water is a warm 78°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that's about the only highlight.
The first real sniff of anything rideable comes on Thursday, August 20th. It’s not much, but Erie (Erie) picks up a tiny 1.0ft swell from the NE with a weak period of 4 seconds. The combined energy is a measly 2, so it’s barely a ripple. The wind is a cross-offshore from the ENE at 9 mph, which will keep it clean, but you’ll be fighting for scraps. By the afternoon, the swell bumps to 2ft from the NNE, but the wind swings to a cross-shore NE at 12 mph, making it a bit messy.
Saturday, August 22nd sees a little wobble of 1ft from the W with a period of 3 seconds, but it’s a cross-onshore breeze. The energy is still pathetic at 4.
Then we hit a huge dead zone. From Sunday, August 23rd through the end of the month, the energy is a flat zero. There’s a brief moment on Sunday, August 23rd with a 3ft NW swell and a 4-second period, with combined energy of 29, but it’s accompanied by a strong 19 mph onshore wind and a risk of thunderstorms. That’s not surfable, that’s a washing machine. The rest of the days are glassy or clean but with zero swell.
This blank run continues right through the first week of September. The first few days of September are flat, with a few onshore winds later in the week that will just chop up an already flat lake. The only glimmer is on September 4th, where the afternoon turns glassy with a WNW wind at 3 mph, but again, there’s no swell to speak of.
So, the brutal truth is there’s nothing to recommend. The forecast is a long, quiet stretch. In a lake like Erie, these flat spells are normal. When the wind does blow, it’s usually from the wrong direction or too strong. Don’t hold your breath; the forecasts can change, but for now, it’s a solid rest for the board.
