The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s chew the fat on what Lake Erie is doing over the next couple weeks.
Honestly, it’s a rough go right now. This is one of those spells where the lake just isn't playing ball. We’re staring down a 16-day window that’s essentially flat and disappointing from now right through the middle of September. There aren’t any decent surf options on the table for the whole stretch. No way around it.
From Tuesday morning the 25th of August, Erie is showing barely a bump – a tiny 1 ft swell from the NW with a period of just 3 seconds and a combined energy of only 2. It’s weak and ugly. Wind is cross-onshore at 9 mph, just stirring up junk. That story repeats all week. Water temp is about average for the time of year, but it doesn’t matter when there’s nothing to paddle into.
Through the rest of August and into the first week of September, it’s a dead zone. We get some glassy windows, like Wednesday afternoon the 26th and Saturday morning the 29th, but there’s zero swell to go with them. On the 6th and 7th of September we finally see some clean offshore breezes from the SSE and S, blowing 12-19 mph, which would be perfect if we had waves – but we don’t. The numbers are all zeroes for height and energy, just “poor surf conditions” across the board.
So what you’ve got is a long, flat stretch. For Erie, this isn’t all that strange; the lake goes through these quiet phases when the wind refuses to cooperate with the right fetch. The upside is this spot is consistent when it fires, so it rarely stays poor for long. The forecast could flip with a decent NW gale. But for now, leave the stick at home and maybe just watch the horizon.
Hang tight – the lake will come back.
Stay salty,
Rusty
