The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the Lake Erie stretch.
Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – this is one of those outlooks where the lake is just takin’ a nap. There’s no surf on the cards for the entire 16-day window. From Wednesday the 29th of July all the way through to Thursday the 13th of August, it’s a total blank. Every single session is marked as poor surf conditions, and the scores are dead zero. So, don’t wax up just yet.
We do get a little pulse of energy on the very first morning, Wednesday the 29th of July. The swell is coming from the NNW at about 4ft, but the period is a short, weak 6 seconds, and the wind is a cross-on from the North at 12 mph. Combined energy is only 80 – that’s really weak, barely a ripple. The water is sitting at 74°, which is about one degree warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s a touch warmer than average, but that won’t help the waves. The break is Erie, and it’s exposed, but with that short-period, wind-affected slop, it’s just not worth paddling out for. The conditions are choppy and messy.
By Thursday afternoon the 30th, the swell drops to a tiny 1ft, energy is a measly 2, and the wind is light and cross-on. It’s flat, mate. From Friday the 31st onward, we see zeros across the board for swell height and energy. There are a few glassy mornings on the 4th and 5th of August, and again on the 11th of August, but with no swell to ride, it’s just a flat, pretty lake. Towards the end, on the 13th of August, the wind picks up to a fresh 19 mph cross-on from the NNE, but with no waves, it’s just lumpy water.
Look, Erie is consistent, but when it’s flat, it’s flat. A blank run like this is a bit of a bummer, but it happens. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it, but for now, the boards stay in the shed.
Rusty.
