The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what's coming up for us on Lake Erie. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a dry spell and a long one. The good news is, with a lake this size, it never stays flat forever.
So, here’s the deal for the next two weeks and a bit: we’ve got almost nothing on the table. For the first few days, starting Wednesday the 15th of July, we’re looking at tiny, weak waves – we’re talking 0.3m to 0.7m tops. That’s about 1 to 2 feet. The combined energy is pathetic, peaking at just 20 on Sunday the 19th. That's barely a ripple. The wind is all over the place, mostly cross-on and choppy, which isn't doing us any favours. Then, from Friday the 17th of July afternoon, things just flatline. We’ve got a solid stretch from that point all the way through to the end of the month where the wave comment is just "poor surf conditions" and the energy is zero. That’s a massive gap. There’s a few moments Monday the 20th and later on with clean-looking cross-off winds, but with no swell to work with, it’s just a glassy lake.
Given this is a lake and not the ocean, a blank run like this is more normal. The wind just isn’t lining up with any significant fetch. Looking at the guidance, the spot is Erie, which is exposed to a W swell. But the wind is stubbornly coming from the wrong directions or it's just too weak to generate anything worthwhile. The water is much warmer than normal, sitting at 76°, but that’s little comfort when you can’t get a ride.
Honestly, the only thing that’s worth keeping an eye on is if the forecasts change. For now, there are zero standouts, zero options, and zero waves. It’s a gear-check, lake-watch kind of period. We'll see what the next system brings.
Rusty.
