The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let's get to it.

Well, I gotta be straight with you – this is a quiet stretch for Erie. The whole 16-day window is looking pretty flat. There's a tiny window of small, weak, short-period, poor-quality swell right at the start, but it's nothing to get excited about, and it's accompanied by messy cross and onshore winds. After the 27th of August, it's a total flat spell. The forecast shows a long stretch of zero surf energy right through until the 9th of September. The only place we've got in the forecast is Erie itself, which is a consistent spot, so it's a little unusual to see such a blank run, but it happens. The water is much warmer than normal for this time of year, coming in at 76°F with a 4°F anomaly, so at least a session would be comfortable if there were waves.

Looking at the tiny bit of action we have, the only potential window is early on. On Tuesday morning, the 25th of August, we have a tiny 1 ft swell from the NW with a period of 3 seconds and a combined energy of (3). That's not enough to ride. The wind is a cross-on 9 mph from the NNW, making for pretty choppy conditions. That afternoon, it's flat. On Wednesday, the 26th, it's still flat. Thursday the 27th sees a slightly bigger, but still poor, 2 ft swell from the west with a 5-second period and a combined energy of (11), but it's accompanied by a risk of thunderstorms and a 16 mph cross wind. It's just not what you want to paddle out into. The rest of the days are all zeros and dashes. There's a glassy morning on Saturday the 29th of August, and again on the 1st of September, but with no swell, it's just a lake.

So, there's no standout session here. For a consistent spot like Erie, this is a long dry spell. The setup is more interesting for a flat day on the lake than a paddle out. If you're chasing waves, you might need to look elsewhere for a while.
