The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's talk about what's on offer for the Lake Erie scene.
Well, folks, I've gotta be straight with you – it's a pretty grim outlook for the next couple of weeks. We're looking at a long, long stretch of flat or near-flat conditions. The only real chance to get wet at all comes right at the start, but it's not what any of us would call "surf."
Let's break it down. For the whole 16-day run, the wave energy is practically non-existent. We're talking about combined swell energy values stuck at "0" or barely scratching into single digits (1 to 5). That's as weak as it gets. There's simply no push, no power.
The only faint pulse comes on Sunday, August 30th afternoon, where we might see a tiny 0.7ft ripple from the west with a period of just 3 seconds. It's a short-period, wind-driven bump. By Monday afternoon, we get a 1ft bump from the WSW, but with a cross-onshore wind of 15 mph making it choppy and messy. Don't get excited.
After that first few days of September, the numbers drop right back to zero energy from the 5th of September all the way through to the 14th of September. It’s a total blank. We see some glassy mornings on the 4th and 6th, but there’s nothing to ride. The wind is often clean or cross-off, which is a tease – it’s the perfect lake surface but without a single wave to surf.
So, the honest truth? There are no standout days here. There are no recommended breaks. If you absolutely had to paddle, the absolute best on offer is the 1ft bump on Tuesday, September 1st morning at the break "Erie", but with a 15 mph cross-onshore wind, it’s going to be a bumpy, ugly paddle. The rest of the period is a full-on drought from the 5th to the 14th.
For an area like this, a blank run is more normal for the time of year. It can change, but right now, we're in a waiting game.
Stay patient.
