The Lowdown
Alright, let me tell you how it’s looking for the next couple weeks. I’ve got to be straight with you – this is a tough outlook for Erie. We’re looking at a long, quiet stretch with barely a ripple. There’s a few tiny windows of small, sloppy swell, but nothing that gets the heart racing. The first real chance is Monday morning, August 17, and even that’s a struggle.
Monday morning the 17th, we’ve got a weak NNW swell pushing in at about 2ft, but the period is a short 4 seconds – that’s just wind chop, no power behind it. The wind is cross-on from the NNW at 9 mph, making it choppy. Combined wave energy is weak at 16, and the water temp is 77°F – that’s 5°F warmer than normal for mid-August, which is notable. But don’t get excited, the surf quality is poor. By Monday afternoon it drops to 1ft and barely registers.
The rest of the week is flat to near-flat. Tuesday the 18th sees a tiny 1ft W swell with only a 3-second period, and cross-on wind. Wednesday the 19th has a bit more energy but it’s still poor, with 2ft NW swell, a 4-second period, and moderate cross-shore wind from the SW at 12 mph (energy at 20). Not worth paddling out.
Thursday the 20th offers our best chance in this whole bleak run. Thursday afternoon turns glassy with a light WNW breeze at 3 mph, and we get a tiny 1ft NNE swell with a 3-second period. It’s glassy, clean, but the swell is so weak (energy: 2) that you’ll be bobbing around waiting for a bump. Still, if you’re desperate, that’s the cleanest it’ll be.
After that, from Friday the 21st all the way through Tuesday the 1st of September, it’s a dead run. There’s no swell on the charts and no surf to speak of. The wind varies – some glassy mornings, some clean conditions – but without any swell, it’s a lake of glass. Good for a paddle, not for a wave.
So, if there’s one standout, it’s Thursday afternoon, August 20. If you can get out, the glassy conditions will make even those 1ft bumps as rideable as they can be. But honestly, this is a kite surfer’s setup more than a paddle surfer’s. Keep an eye on the forecasts, though. In a lake environment like this, it tends not to stay dead forever.
