The Lowdown

Alright, let’s talk about Erie. I’ll be straight with you – this is a rough one. The whole 16-day stretch is basically a flat spell. There’s a tiny bump of swell on the 21st and 22nd of July, but it’s messy and not worth getting worked up over. The water’s running warm, about 76°, which is a couple of degrees above normal for this time of year – feels more like a summer bath than a lake.

Let’s start with the only real action, which is Tuesday morning the 21st. We’ve got a small 3 ft swell from the west, with a short period of 6 seconds. That’s windswell, not groundswell, so it’s not going to have much push. The combined energy is a weak 42 – barely a ripple. The wind is a strong 22 mph from the SSW, blowing cross-offshore. That’ll keep the surface clean, but that wind is going to be a battle to paddle into. By Tuesday afternoon, the swell picks up to 3 ft, still from the west, but the wind swings to the WSW and goes cross-shore, creating a lumpy, choppy mess. The energy improves a bit to 86, but it’s still weak.

Wednesday morning the 22nd is the best of a bad bunch. The swell hits 5 ft from the NW, still with a short period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy is 133 – moderate, but not powerful. The wind is WNW at 19 mph, blowing cross-onshore, so it’s going to be lumpy and rough. For a lake break, this is just not going to be fun. It’s too big for beginners, but the conditions are so poor it’s only for the hardcore. After Wednesday afternoon, the swell just drops off a cliff. From Thursday the 23rd all the way through to the 4th of August, it’s a flat, dead lake. The wind is all over the place – some glassy mornings, some cross-offshore breezes – but with no swell, it’s a total write-off.

There’s no standout here. The best you could hope for is a few small, grovelly waves on Wednesday morning if you’re desperate, but honestly, it’s not worth the drive. There’s a 12-day gap from the 23rd all the way through to the end of the forecast with zero recommendations. This is pretty normal for a lake in summer – it can go flat for weeks. The conditions look more interesting for kite surfing than paddling on those windy days, but for surf, we’re waiting.

Rusty.
