The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's cookin' for our local Lake Erie scene right now. Straight up, I gotta be honest with ya – the next fortnight is lookin' pretty bleak. We're staring down a serious drought of swell energy, so don't get your hopes up for anything worth paddling out for.
The pattern ahead is stubbornly flat for the vast majority of the 16-day window. We've got a massive gap of no surf at all, stretching from now all the way through to the end of the period on the 29th of August. You'll see a tiny blink of energy around the 16th, but it's so weak it's hardly worth mentioning.
Let's break down the only real glimmer, and it's a faint one.
Sunday, 16th August
This is it, the only period with any measurable wave energy. Early Sunday morning at Erie, we'll see a tiny 2ft swell muscling in from the west. The period is a short, weak 4 seconds and the combined energy is next to nothing (13). It's a poor surf condition. By the afternoon, the wind swings onshore from the west at 12 mph, bumping the swell up to a measly 3ft from the WNW, but it gets choppy and messy with a period of just 5 seconds and energy still pathetic (36). The cross-onshore wind and short period will makes for a real junky, blown-out mess. Honestly, with that onshore breeze and weak, short-period chop, this looks more like a day for the kiteboarders to get a session in than for a paddle surfer to bother.
Besides that, from Monday the 17th all the way through to the 29th of August, it's completely flat. The combined energy sits at 0 for every session. We get some glassy mornings and clean offshore breezes here and there, but without any swell, it's just a lake surface. A few times the wind picks up from the south-west, but that's just creating cross-chop on a flat lake. Nothing to ride.
The water temp at this break is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual to report there.
So, the bottom line: There are zero good surf options in this entire 16-day outlook. This area is prone to these flat spells in summer when there's no storm activity on the lake. It's a blank run, plain and simple.
Keep your board waxed, watch the forecasts, and hopefully we'll see a better pattern develop.
Rusty.
