The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking.
To be straight with you, this is a tough stretch for surfers on Lake Erie. We’re looking at a long, flat run with hardly a ripple worth paddling for. The guidance points to Erie itself (Erie) as the only break worth mentioning, but even it’s a struggle.
Right now, through the rest of July and into the first week of August, the wave energy is basically zero. The combined energy is sitting at a measly 1 (for the tiny bump on the 23rd) and mostly just 0. That’s a sign of a very quiet lake. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing weird going on there.
We do see a slight pulse of energy arrive on Sunday the 26th of July, with a weak 1 ft swell from the west, but it’s only 4 seconds of period – that’s pure wind chop, not a proper groundswell. The combined energy is still weak at 2. It’s not enough to write home about.
Tuesday the 28th of July morning shows the best we’re going to get: a 3 ft swell from the west-northwest, still with a short period of 5 seconds, and combined energy of 25 (weak). The wind is light and cross-shore, so it might be clean-ish, but the surf will be small and weak. It’s a standout purely because everything else is worse, but don’t expect any kind of gem.
After that, it's bone dry. From the 29th of July all the way through to the 7th of August, there is zero wave energy. Nothing. Nada. The wind is often onshore or cross-onshore, making it choppy and ugly on top of the flatness.
There are no recommendations in the finder file, so this is a classic Lake Erie summer lull. It tends not to stay this poor forever, but for now, leave the board in the car and maybe go for a swim.
Stay patient.
Rusty.
