The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one for the Lake Erie region. I'm looking at the next 16 days, and honestly, we're in a flat spell. There’s a big gap with no real surf to speak of.
The forecast starts with Friday afternoon, 28 August. At Erie, we’ve got a tiny 0.7 ft swell from the NNE, but it's got no energy behind it (combined energy of just 1). The water is sitting at 74°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. It’s glassy, but there’s simply nothing to ride. That sets the tone.
From Saturday, 29 August, all the way through to Sunday, 12 September, it’s a write-off. The models show nothing but zeros for wave height and energy. We get a few moments of clean, glassy conditions and some light offshore breezes, like on the mornings of Wednesday, 3 September, and Saturday, 5 September, but without a wave, it doesn't matter. A little bump shows up on Wednesday morning, 2 September, with a 2 ft swell from the W, but the wind is a messy cross-shore at 12 mph, and the energy is still weak (8). It’s not worth a paddle.
So, here’s the hard truth: there are zero standouts in this 16-day window. The consistency just isn't there. For a lake setup, this kind of blank run is more normal than we'd like. It tends not to stay poor for long, but for now, the lake is flat. If you absolutely have to get wet, the best you can hope for is a glassy morning on the 11th of September, but you’ll be bobbing around on a mill pond. Maybe the kites will have a day on the 6th of September with that 15 mph cross-off, but for paddle surfing, this is a no-go.
Keep the board waxed, and check back with me. Forecasts can change.
Rusty.
