The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one.
Right now, looking at the whole 16-day window, there’s simply nothing to get excited about. The first week is a total bust. We’re staring down a long stretch of flat, clean conditions with zero swell energy (0) for days on end. You’ll see glassy mornings and clean afternoons, but it’s a lake out there, not a surf break. The wind is all over the place, but it doesn’t matter because there’s no swell to ride. This pattern runs right through the first week and into the second.
Things stay quiet right through until the 13th of August. There’s a tiny blip on the 3rd of August with a weak 2 ft swell from the NE, but it’s got a short period of 4 seconds and the combined energy is a pathetic 8 – that’s barely a ripple. The wind is cross-shore, making it even less appealing. It’s not worth paddling out for.
The real standout, and honestly, the only hope in this entire forecast, is the afternoon of Thursday, the 13th of August over at Erie. We get a lull in the swell, but the wind finally goes offshore from the ESE at 12 mph. The guidance says Erie is a consistent spot that’s exposed to swell from the W, and it’s already a place that sees crowds sometimes. While the swell is absent, the wind is howling offshore, which means the surface will be clean. If any tiny pulse of wind swell shows up, this is the only window with a chance of a clean, rideable wave. It’s a long shot, but it’s the only shot we’ve got. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
Beyond that, the 14th and 15th offer clean, glassy mornings but still no swell. It’s a long, dry spell. The setup at Erie is a beach, so with the strong winds and flat water, honestly, this is looking more like a kiteboarding window than a surfing one.
Rusty.
