The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the Lake Erie region over the next couple of weeks.
Well, I’m not gonna sugar-coat it – this outlook is a tough one. We’re looking at a 16-day window with barely a ripple to speak of. The first few days of September are offering nothing but poor surf conditions, and that pattern just keeps rolling. The only real swell we see is a tiny 1ft pulse from the WNW on Thursday the 3rd with a period of 4 seconds, but the combined energy is a measly 6 (six) and it’s blown out by a cross-onshore wind. That’s not surf, that’s a messy lake chop.
The water temperature is sitting at 74°, which is a whopping 4° warmer than normal for this time of year. It feels like a warm bath out there, but with no waves to enjoy it in, it’s just a tease.
There’s a brief moment on the 5th of September where the wind goes light and cross-shore, and the swell direction shifts to the NE with a tiny 1ft at 4 seconds. The combined energy is still only 3. It’s barely rideable on a log, but it’s the closest thing to a surfable condition we get. After that, it’s a long, dry spell. From the 7th of September right through to the end of the 18th, the forecast shows zero combined energy. The chart is dead. There’s no swell, just wind and chop.
The only break in the guidance is Erie. It’s exposed to the W and consistent, but with no swell to work with, that doesn’t mean a thing. The forecast shows a few days of clean, offshore winds (like the morning of the 8th and 15th), but with a zero swell height, it’s just a flat, glassy lake. Great for a paddle, not for a wave.
Honestly, there’s no standout in this window. The first week is a total bust, and the second week shows no improvement. For a lake spot like this, a blank run like this is more normal than not. Your best bet is to pull the wax off the board, check back in a few days, and hope the forecasts change.
Rusty.
