The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about Erie. This is going to be a tough one. Over the next 16 days, the forecast is practically a desert for anything even close to rideable. There are no standout days, no hidden gems, no sneaky windows. We’re looking at a solid run of poor surf conditions right through until the start of September.

The first glimmer of something that *isn’t* flat comes on Sunday the 23rd of August. We get a weak pulse of swell from the NW, pushing waves up to around 3 ft, but the period is a short, choppy 5 seconds. The combined energy is a paltry 32, and the wind is howling onshore from the WNW at 12 mph. That’s raw, lumpy, and not worth paddling out for. The next day, Monday the 24th, is not much better with a similar-sized swell (2 ft) but a cross-onshore breeze and even lower energy (17). It’s still a write-off.

After that, it’s practically flat for the rest of the forecast. From Tuesday the 25th of August all the way through Thursday the 3rd of September, the swell disappears completely. The wind tries to cooperate at times – there are some glassy mornings and clean offshore periods, particularly on the 27th, 28th, and 29th of August, with glassy conditions and clean cross-offshore breezes. But without any swell to work with, it’s just a terrible session. The setup is a lake, so those clean windows are more for a paddleboard or a flat-water cruise than a surf.

The water temperature at Erie is 77°, which is nearly 5° warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a weirdly warm anomaly, but it only makes the flat spell feel more frustrating.

Given the persistent lack of surf, the consistent poor quality, and the small, weak swells that do pop up, this setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on the days with any wind. The truth is, a blank run like this is normal for the area. Forecasts can change, but for now, don’t hold your breath.

Rusty.
