The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one. Looking at the entire 16-day window, there’s barely a ripple worth paddling for. The only real window of opportunity is a small window of surf on Wednesday, July 22nd, and even that’s a bit of a mixed bag.
We start off with a real dud. Saturday, July 18th, through Tuesday, July 21st, is a write-off. The water is a very unusual 76°F (much warmer than normal for this time of year), but that’s about the only thing going for it. We’ve got strong cross-onshore winds and messy, choppy conditions. Not a wave worth chasing.
Then, on Wednesday, July 22nd, things finally get interesting. Overnight and into the morning, Erie picks up a pulse of swell from the NW. The swell is 5ft at 6 seconds, which is a short-period, wind-driven affair, but the combined energy is moderate (142). The kicker is the wind: it’s going to be offshore from the NW at 15 mph. That’s clean, that’s groomed, and that’s about as good as it gets in this run. This is the standout. It’s not huge, but with offshore wind, it’ll be lined up and fun. It’s a consistent spot, so there will be waves to be had.
By Wednesday afternoon, that offshore wind swings to a cross-onshore, and the swell backs down to 4ft. It’s still rideable, but the quality drops off.
After that, it’s a long, dry spell. From Thursday, July 23rd, all the way through Sunday, August 2nd, there’s nothing. The forecast shows flat conditions, with no swell on offer. If you’re a surfer in the area, it’s a good time to check your gear, because the lake is going to be glassy or clean for long stretches, but there’s just no energy to push a wave. This kind of blank run is normal for the region, so don’t get too down. Forecasts can change.
So, bottom line: your one and only shot is Wednesday, July 22nd, early morning. Get out there, get some, and then wait for the next one.
Rusty.
