The Lowdown

Alright, let’s break it down. Truth is, the next couple weeks are pretty grim for any real surfing. We’ve got a few tiny ripples here and there, but nothing worth paddling out for. The water temp is 74°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze if you go for a swim.

At Erie, the first bit of movement comes Monday morning, 14 September, with a tiny 2ft swell from the north, but it’s got a real short period of only 4 seconds and a cross-onshore wind of 12 mph, making it choppy and rough. The combined energy is weak at just (19). That afternoon it drops to a measly 1ft and goes glassy, but still not rideable. The rest of the week stays poor.

There’s a slight chance on Friday morning, 18 September. We get a 3ft swell from the north-northeast with a 5-second period and a clean cross-offshore breeze from the northeast at 9 mph. The combined energy is still weak at (24), but it’s the best you’ll see all week. It won’t be any kind of classic, but if you’re jonesing, that’s your window. The water stays that warm anomaly, which is about the only plus.

From Friday 18 September on, it’s a long, flat run. No surf of any consequence for over a week. We see glassy mornings, like Thursday 24 September with calm winds, but there’s just no swell. The forecast goes dead quiet straight through to Tuesday 29 September, with strong wind and rain, but still nothing to ride.

So, there it is — no good surf options in this 16-day window. It’s a flat spell for this area, but it usually doesn’t stay this way forever, and forecasts can turn around.

Rusty.
