The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat for the Lake Erie region. We’re staring down a long, dry spell for surf, so temper those expectations.

Right now, the water is sitting at a very warm 75°F, which is a massive 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a real oddity.

The outlook starts with a total dud. Monday, September 7th, you’re looking at a tiny 0.3 ft swell from the northeast with a weak 4-second period. The combined energy is a pathetic 1, and the wind is a cross-offshore breeze, but there’s just nothing to work with. It’s poor surf, plain and simple.

We then hit a dead zone. From Tuesday, September 8th, all the way through to Tuesday, September 22nd, the wave energy is zero. There are no waves on the charts. A few days here and there might have clean, glassy conditions, like the morning of Thursday, September 17th, and the afternoon of Saturday, September 19th, but without any swell, it’s just a flat lake. It’s a blank run that’s about two weeks long.

The only tiny flicker of something happens on Wednesday, September 9th, with a 2 ft to 3 ft windswell, but the wind is a messy cross or cross-onshore, and the energy is still very low (34 at its best). That’s not a surf recommendation, that’s just a chop-fest. For a spot like Erie (Erie), which is a beach setup exposed to the west, the total lack of swell means there’s simply nothing to ride. Honestly, with the wind we’ve got, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing right now.

We’re in a dry spell, folks. It tends not to stay this poor for long, but for now, the only thing to do is wait. Keep an eye on the forecasts, because things can change.

Rusty.
