The Lowdown
Alright, I’ve been staring at the charts for Erie, and to be honest, it’s a pretty grim picture for the next couple of weeks. This is a Lake Erie forecast, and it’s looking like a flat spell with almost no real surf to speak of. The water temp is sitting around 75°F, which is about a degree and a half warmer than usual for this time of year—nothing wild, just a touch of extra warmth for the lake.
The first bit of any wave action doesn’t show up until Monday, August 3rd, and even then it’s barely a blip. We’ve got a tiny 2ft swell from the NE with a 3-second period and a combined energy of just 5. That’s weak, windswell stuff, and with a cross wind of 16 mph, the surface is going to be choppy and messy. It’s really not worth paddling out for. The afternoon does see a little bump to 2ft from the NNE, but again, a 4-second period and a moderate breeze mean it’s all chop and no shape. After that, it’s back to flat or near-flat conditions right through to Sunday, August 16th. We’re talking days of zero energy and poor surf conditions.
Honestly, for the whole 16-day window, there isn’t a single standout or even a reasonable session in the lineup. The breaks are all marked as “poor surf conditions” with ratings of 0 out of 10. The combined energy drops to zero for the vast majority of the time. If you’ve got a kite, this might be more your scene—those cross-shore winds on the lake could be interesting for a session, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a solid no-go. The guidance does say Erie can be consistent, so while this stretch is a total blank, it’s likely just a run of bad luck. Forecasts can change, but for now, leave the boards at home.
