The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – the outlook for Erie is a tough one to write. We’re looking at a 16-day window and, to be honest, there’s nothing good on the table for a surf. We have a blank run here that is pretty normal for this area when the swell just doesn’t line up.
The whole period kicks off with a whole lot of nothing. From Friday the 21st of August all the way through the end of the run on Saturday the 5th of September, the data shows zero surf. Every single entry is "poor surf conditions" with a score of zero out of ten. The wave energy is completely absent – lots of readings showing 0 (zero) for the combined energy of all swells. We get a tiny blip on Sunday the 23rd of August where the swell hits about 3.6ft from the NW, but the wind is a fresh cross-onshore breeze at 18.6 mph, making it lumpy and unrideable. That 3.6ft is accompanied by a combined energy of only 62 (weak), so it’s just not gonna happen.
Even the glassy mornings, like Friday the 21st and Sunday the 30th of August, offer nothing because there is no swell height to speak of. The water temp is running much warmer than normal for the time of year, around 77.2°, but you can’t surf flat water. If you’re into kite surfing, the afternoon of Sunday the 23rd might look interesting with that 3.6ft swell and a fresh cross-onshore, but for paddle surfing? Forget it.
The only break we have to talk about is Erie itself. It’s consistent, exposed to swell, and likes a W direction, but the swell just doesn’t deliver. There is no standout session. Not one. Sometimes the lake just goes quiet, and this is one of those times. Forecasts can change, but right now, the lake is taking a nap.
