The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – the next 16 days are a real bust for surf around Erie (Lake Erie). We're looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple worth mentioning.

The lake is unusually warm right now at 74°, sitting about 4° above the norm for this time of year, which is pretty notable. But that's where the good news ends.

We start on Friday, September 4th, but it's a non-starter. Tiny 0.7 ft swell from the WNW with a short, weak 3-second period. The combined energy is a measly 1 – that's as weak as it gets. Onshore winds don't help, leaving us with poor surf conditions. This flat spell really sets in from the 7th of September onward. From Monday the 7th all the way through Saturday the 19th of September, there is absolutely no surf to speak of. The combined energy sits at zero for days on end. We get a few moments of clean conditions with light offshore winds, like on Sunday the 13th, but with no swell to work with, it's just a flat, glassy lake.

There's a tiny bump on the 5th and 6th of September, with a 2 ft to 2 ft swell from the NE, but the period is still a pathetic 4 seconds, and the energy is weak (7 to 20). The wind is cross-shore or cross-offshore, but the waves are just wind slop, and the forecast calls it what it is: poor surf conditions.

Honestly, this is a classic Lake Erie flat spell. We get these runs where the lake goes completely to sleep. The wind and swell directions never line up, and there's no groundswell on the horizon. For a surfer, there's nothing to chase. The only thing that might be worth mentioning is that with the consistent cross-shore winds on the 5th and 6th, a kite surfer might find something to play with, but for a paddle surfer, it's a no-go.

Keep the board in the car and the wax in the cupboard. This one's a write-off.

Rusty.
