The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one. Looking at the forecast for Erie over the next 16 days, we’ve got a blank run. Absolutely nothing happening on the surf front. The finder is showing zero recommendations for the whole stretch, which is a real bummer for a lake that can sometimes fire. When the guidance says the break is consistent and exposed, and we still get nothing, it tells you this is one of those rare total flat spells. It’s not the norm for Erie, but it happens. The good news is that it tends not to stay this poor for long, and forecasts can change, so keep an eye on the horizon.
We start off on Tuesday, 18th August, with clear skies but combined swell energy is a big fat zero (0). The water’s running warm at 77°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – over 5° above average, so that’s a notable anomaly. But with no swell, that’s just a nice day for a swim, not a surf.
The whole forecast period is a gap. From Tuesday, 18th August, all the way through to Wednesday, 2nd September, every single session is marked as "poor surf conditions." We see a few tiny ripples – like a 0.7 ft wave on the afternoon of Thursday, 20th August with a period of just 3 seconds, and a 1.0 ft wave on Saturday, 22nd August morning with a 3-second period – but the combined energy is barely registering (1 and 2 respectively). That’s nothing you can ride.
Even when the wind goes glassy or offshore, like on the afternoon of Saturday, 22nd August (glassy, WSW 3 mph), or the morning of Sunday, 30th August (offshore, SE 12 mph), there’s simply no wave to catch. The swell just isn’t there.
So, sorry to say it, but for the next 16 days, leave the board at home. The lake is flat out. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for a change soon.
Rusty.
