Erie Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, let’s have a look at the forecast for the next couple of weeks. The honest truth is, it’s a pretty lean stretch of days for any decent waves. The first bit of surf we can talk about shows up on the 28th, but it’s not pretty.

Monday the 27th is a write-off. There’s nothing doing, the risk of thunderstorms and a cross-shore wind from the southwest at 12 mph, you’d be better off doing something else.

Tuesday the 28th we see a little pulse come in. The morning swell is 5 ft from the northwest with a short period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate at best (146). The wind is cross-onshore from the north-northwest at 9 mph, so it’s gonna be choppy and messy. It’s about the same in the afternoon, a bit bigger at 6 ft (energy 288), but still just a blown-out, choppy mess. For a beach break like Erie, this is more of a kite-surfing setup than a clean paddle session.

Wednesday the 29th offers the best of a bad lot, but it’s still not great. The swell holds around 6 ft from the north-northwest, period still short at 6 seconds, with moderate energy (237 in the morning). The wind goes offshore from the north-northwest at 16 mph in the morning, dropping to 12 mph in the afternoon. That’s the cleanest wind we’ll get, but the short period and the wind strength will still make it a bit of a battle. The water temp is about 74°, which is a touch warmer than average for this time of year — nothing crazy, but nice.

After that, it drops off a cliff. From Thursday the 30th of July all the way through to Tuesday the 11th of August, the energy is basically zero. We’re talking flat, glassy mornings, light rain, and a few onshore breezes, but no surf to speak of. There’s a long gap of nearly two weeks with nothing worth paddling for.

So, to be blunt, the standout is probably Wednesday morning the 29th at Erie. The offshore wind will clean up that 6 ft north-northwest swell, but it’s short-period and the wind is strong, so it’s going to be a handful. It’s not a day for beginners — that 6 ft is getting up there, and the short period means it’ll be a bit dumpy. The crowd is listed as “sometimes,” so you might have a few others out.

For the rest of the window, it’s a blank run. But as we know, it never stays flat for long around here, and forecasts can change. Keep an eye on it.
