Table - best surf conditions forecast for Erie over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you about this one. We’ve got a 16-day window ahead, and honestly, it’s a tough one for the Lake Erie region. The forecast is basically a long stretch of flat, small, or just plain messy conditions. There’s a real gap here from the start right through to the end, with barely a ripple worth paddling for. The first real chance at anything is a minor blip early on, but after that, it’s a whole lot of nothing.
Looking at the numbers, we have to talk about the first few days. On Saturday the 11th of July, the wind is pumping from the NE at 12 mph, which is just cross-shore and no good. The swell is a tiny 1 ft to 2 ft from the NE with a period of only 4 seconds – that’s just wind chop, no energy at all. The combined energy is a weak 4 to 16. It’s all labeled “poor surf conditions,” and I can’t argue with that. The water temp is a very unusual 77°, which is a massive 6° warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a weird one for July.
The next few days are even worse. Sunday the 12th through to the end of the window on Sunday the 26th of July is a desert. The swell is either non-existent or just a tiny, weak 0.7 ft to 2 ft with periods of 3 to 5 seconds. The combined energy is almost always 0 or a single-digit number. The wind is mostly cross-shore or cross-onshore, creating chop and ripples. There’s no clean surf to be had. Even a rare bit of glassy or offshore wind appears on the 25th, but there’s no swell to ride.
So, the bottom line is: there are zero standout options. For a lake like Erie, this kind of blank run is more normal than not. It’s a summer flat spell. Don’t get your hopes up. If you absolutely have to get wet, you’re looking at a kiteboard, not a surfboard, with that persistent cross-shore wind. The forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a no-go.
Rusty.
