The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. I’m going to level with you – the next couple of weeks are looking rough. There’s just no other way to put it. We’re in for a major flat spell, and I mean a long one.
Right now, we’re looking at a whole lot of nothing. No swell at all until the 18th. That’s over a week of nothing. When we finally do see a glimmer of hope, it’s pretty much junk.
So let’s get into the fine print. First point of call is Erie (Erie). The water is a warm 73°F, which is running about 6°F above the norm. A little slice of tropical, that.
Early on the 18th, there’s a tiny pulse from the NNE. We’re talking a couple of feet at 4 seconds on the clock. The combined energy is a paltry 23, which is barely a ripple. The cross-shore breeze is going to junk it up further. It’s pretty ugly.
Then we get another, slightly better, pulse on the 20th and 21st. Swell from the Northeast, a couple of feet, maybe 3ft at 6 seconds. Again, it’s all short period. The good news is that on the 21st there’s a window with a cross-offshore wind, which might keep the surface a little cleaner. But with that energy only reaching the mid-60s, this is far from good. It’s going to be a real struggle to find anything with any push or shape.
Then, nothing. The models go completely dry from the 22nd all the way through to the end of the month. It’s not a good look.
So, what can I say? With the swell under that 1.5m (5ft) mark the whole time, the beginners are safe. But there’s just no power, no period, no life to the waves. Everything is short period and weak, which doesn't work for this beach break.
It's going to be a grind. This looks more like a week to stay home and wash the car than anything else. The best stuff on offer is still pretty poor, and it's all just "wait for the next one." It's one of those periods where you might just want to paint the fence.
I’d hold out some hope, but honestly, the charts are not giving us a single thing to work with. Hang in there.
