Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Honestly, mate, it’s a tough stretch. We’re looking at a 16-day window starting now, and the truth is, there’s nothing worthwhile for a surfer. The first record kicks off on Monday July 6th with a tiny 3ft NNE windswell, but it’s a cross-shore wind and the energy is weak (55), so the conditions are just poor. That pretty much sets the tone for the whole run.
From there, it’s a long, dry spell. The surf basically disappears after the morning of July 7th, and for day after day, the swell height drops to zero or near-zero, and the combined energy flatlines. We’ve got glassy conditions on the morning of July 8th, but there’s no swell – nothing to ride. That pattern sticks around through the rest of July, with only a few tiny bumps of 0.7ft to 2ft, always with poor conditions or no energy.
The only break on offer is Erie. It’s a consistent spot, and it’s exposed to swell from the west, which is the optimum direction. But the water temp is a very unusual 75°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a solid 6°F above average. Still, none of that matters when there’s just no surf.
There’s a brief moment on Saturday July 11th morning where we get a light offshore wind (SE at 9 mph) and a tiny 1ft pulse from the NNE, with a period of 4 seconds. The energy is next to nothing (6), and it’s basically a lake ripple. Not worth a paddle.
The rest of the forecast is a total blank. From July 12th onwards, the wave height is a dash – zero – and the energy is zero. It’s just wind and chop. For a spot like Erie, this kind of flat run isn’t unusual, but it doesn’t make it any easier.
So, bottom line: there are no standout days, no waves to chase. Hang the boards up, maybe check the forecast again in a week. Things can change, but right now, it’s a no-go.
Rusty.
