The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let me level with you straight up: the next 16 days are looking pretty grim for El Palito. Honestly, there just isn't any decent surf to get excited about. This stretch is a real bummer, a long, flat gap from now all the way through. The water temp is sitting at a warm 83.1°F, which is about normal for this time of year, but you won't be needing a wetsuit to sit around watching a flat ocean.
Let's walk through it. The forecast kicks off with tiny waves on Tuesday the 18th, but it's a write-off with thunderstorm risks and a messy cross-onshore wind. The swell is a pathetic 2.0ft from the NE with a short, weak 6-second period and combined energy of just 37 – that's barely a ripple. Wednesday the 19th starts glassy, which would be a dream if there was any swell, but the waves are still a paltry 2.0ft. Thursday the 20th through to Monday the 25th? Totally flat. Nothing. Nada. The energy readings are zero. You're better off taking up golf.
We get a tiny pulse back on Saturday the 22nd, with a 3.3ft NE swell, but it has only 7 seconds of period (84 energy), and the afternoon brings cross-onshore winds. It's still classified as poor surf. Sunday the 23rd sees a drop to 2.6ft, and then it's back to flat again until Wednesday the 27th, which offers another small 2.6ft bump, again with a poor 6-second period and combined energy of only 54. Light cross-onshore winds won't save this one.
Things get truly comical from the 28th onwards – we're talking 0.3ft of swell. A long-period groundswell of 14 seconds pops up on Wednesday the 2nd of September, but the height is a microscopic 0.3ft, so it's entirely unrideable. The bottom line is that there are zero standout days here. I wouldn't even bother paddling out unless you feel like floating on a pool toy. It’s a solid blank run, and honestly, for this area, that's not unusual. This setup is more interesting for the kiteboarders than anyone with a paddle. Conditions might change, but right now, keep the board in the car.
