The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you from the get-go: the next couple of weeks at El Palito are looking pretty grim, if I'm being honest. We’ve got a massive run of dead flat, poor surf conditions stretching right from now, Sunday the 19th of July, all the way through most of the coming week and beyond. There’s just no real swell energy to speak of, and when the wind isn’t howling cross-onshore, it’s swinging around and messing things up anyway. It’s a tough stretch.
Looking at the charts, we’re staring at a whole lot of zeros on the energy scale – flat as a pancake. The first hint of anything rideable doesn’t show up until the morning of Saturday, the 25th of July. Even then, it’s a weak 3 ft from the NE, with a short 6-second period, and only 76 units of combined swell energy. That’s barely a bump. And the wind? It’s blowing offshore from the NNE at 6 mph that morning, which would normally be good news, but the swell is so weak and poor it just won’t matter. The afternoon goes cross-onshore again, so that’s that.
Now, there is one tiny little moment that might get a fella’s hopes up. On the morning of Sunday, the 26th of July, the wind goes totally glassy – zero mph off the N. For a few hours, it’s dead calm. The swell is only 2 ft from the NE, still a short 6-second period, and just 40 units of energy. It’s not going to be a classic, but if you’re desperate for a splash on a log or a foamy, that glassy window is the cleanest the water will look for a long while. But honestly, for a proper wave? It’s a no-go.
After that, we drop back into the same old story: more flat spells, more cross-onshore breezes, and another tiny pulse of 3 ft from the NE on the afternoon of Saturday, the 1st of August, but with a cross-onshore wind spoiling it.
So what’s the bottom line, fellow waterman? There just isn’t a standout session in this whole 16-day window. The best we have is that glassy Sunday morning with barely enough swell to push a foamie. It’s one of those times where the forecast looks more interesting for a kite than a paddle, to be honest. But hang in there – it rarely stays this poor for this long around here, and the charts can flip.
Rusty.
