The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be honest with you, lookin' at the charts for the next 16 days, it’s a real tough stretch for surf around here. We’re starin’ down a long, dry spell with hardly a ripple to get excited about.
The first real sign of life doesn't show up until Saturday, the 25th of July. Before that, from now through to Friday the 24th, it’s just flat. Nothin' but small wind ripples and poor conditions. You’d be better off findin’ a swimmin’ hole or polishin’ your wax.
Now, for that Saturday morning, the 25th, we finally see a tiny pulse of energy. El Palito might just about be rideable. We’re talkin’ a small 2.6ft swell from the NE, with a period of 6 seconds. That’s a short-period, weak swell – the combined energy is only 56, so it’s barely a breath. The air is dead calm, glassy, which is the only thing goin’ for it. The morning offshore wind is light and from the NNE, which is right on the money for the break. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, fairly consistent, so you might snag a few knee-high dribblers. Water temp is 82°, which is about normal for this time of year.
But don’t get your hopes up for the afternoon – the wind swings around to a cross-onshore and the surf just shuts down again. We see a similar blip on the morning of Wednesday the 29th of July, with another 2.6ft, 6-second NE swell and glassy conditions. Same story: barely surfable.
Even into the end of the month, Friday the 31st of July, we see a slight bump in energy. The swell height nudges up to 3.3ft from the NE with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy climbs to 123 (moderate). But the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, and the records just say "poor surf conditions." It’s frustrating because the swell is there, but the wind is just killin’ it.
So, to sum it up: the only window for a paddle is a few glassy mornings with tiny, weak swell. If you’re desperate, hit El Palito on the morning of the 25th or the 29th for some small, clean waves for the absolute beginner. Beyond that, it’s a whole lot of nothin’. This is a proper dry spell, boys. Hang loose.
