The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this 16-day window at El Palito is a tough one, and there’s not a lot to get excited about. The surf is mostly flat or very small, and when there is a bump, the wind tends to mess it up. We’re looking at a long dry spell from now until late July, with only a couple of brief moments that might be worth a paddle.
The first real chance of anything surfable is on Tuesday morning, July 21. We’ve got a small NE swell rolling in at 4ft, with a period of 7 seconds – so it’s a short-period, weak little windswell, but the conditions are unusual. The wind goes glassy, with the lightest of breezes from the NE. That’s a major positive for a break like this (a beach and breakwater setup), where clean conditions are everything. The combined energy is only moderate (127), so don’t expect any power. It’s a beginner-friendly size, so if you’re learning, this is your window. The water temperature is sitting at 82°, which is about 0.9° warmer than normal for this time of year – nothing dramatic, just a touch of summer warmth. The break is fairly consistent, but it can get crowded sometimes, so expect a few heads out.
Then it’s back to nothing for days. The next sniff of a wave comes on Wednesday morning, July 29, with another tiny NE swell, 3ft and a 6-second period. Combined energy is just 60, so weak. Again, the wind goes glassy from the SW, which is rare here. The conditions are clean, but the swell is so small it’s barely surfable. It’s a beginner-level wave at best, and the break is fairly consistent, so it might break, but it’ll be tiny and gutless. The rest of the afternoons are all cross-onshore and choppy, so forget it.
The truth is, there’s no standout day in this outlook. The two mornings on July 21 and July 29 are the only ones where you might get a clean little wave, but they’re not worth planning a trip around. For a beach and breakwater spot like this, the consistent cross-onshore afternoons and the long gaps of flatness make this a pretty bleak run. If I were you, I’d keep an eye on the forecasts – it tends not to stay this poor for long, but right now, we’re in a hole.
Rusty.
