Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s on the cards for El Palito over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty quiet stretch. There’s no swell to speak of for the vast majority of the forecast, so you’ll be waiting a while for anything worth paddling out for.
The first time there’s even a sniff of a wave is Saturday morning, July 4th. We’ve got a tiny 2ft NE swell creeping in, with a short period of just 6 seconds. Combined wave energy is a weak 35, so it’s not exactly firing. The wind is glassy out of the NNE at 3 mph, which will keep the surface clean, but honestly, with that size and period, it’s more of a chance for a beginner to get wet on a foamie than a proper surf. The setup is a beach and breakwater, pretty exposed to the swell.
After that? A long, flat dry spell. From Sunday the 5th right through until Saturday morning, July 18th, the forecast shows *zero* surfable energy. Day after day of onshore or cross-onshore breezes and no waves. If you’re a kiter or windsurfer, the moderate cross-onshore afternoons might get you going, but for a pure paddle surfer, it’s a total bust. This blank run is more normal for the area when the swell windows aren’t lining up.
Finally, on Saturday morning, July 18th, there’s another pulse – same story, really. A 2ft NE swell with a 6-second period and weak energy (36). The wind is light onshore from the NNE at 3 mph, so it’ll be lumpy, not clean. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing weird going on.
So, the only true standout – if you can call it that – is the morning of July 4th. It’s the only time the conditions are truly glassy with a wave. For a last-resort splash on a longboard or a soft-top, you could do worse. Other than that, keep the board in the car and wait for a better forecast to roll in. Forecasts can always flip, but right now, the ocean is taking a nap.
Rusty.
