The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've had a good look at the charts for the next couple of weeks, and I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough run. The only spot on the radar is El Palito, a beach and breakwater setup, and honestly, it's looking pretty grim. The forecast is a long stretch of "poor surf conditions" with no real standout days. We're looking at a gap of about a week, from the start, where the energy is just a whisper, and then it's more of the same.
From Sunday the 23rd and into Monday the 24th, we've got tiny waves, around 2ft from the NE. The period is a short 6 seconds, so no real grunt. The combined energy is weak, hitting just 36 on Sunday morning and 41 Monday morning. On the plus side, Monday morning is glassy, which is a rare treat, but the swell is just too small and weak to get excited about.
Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th are a complete write-off – no swell at all. Thursday the 27th morning shows a tiny 3ft from the NE with a 6-second period and weak energy (64), but it's onshore. By Thursday afternoon, there's a weird 0.3ft swell with a 15-second period, but that's from a NE direction and the combined energy is only 8 – basically a phantom.
Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th are more of the same: tiny 2ft to 3ft, short period, weak energy (43 to 66), and mostly cross-onshore wind. There's a thunderstorm risk on Saturday afternoon, which is just adding insult to injury.
Sunday the 30th afternoon finally sees a slight bump – the swell hits 3ft from the NE, with a period of 8 seconds and the combined energy climbs to a moderate 119. The wind is cross-onshore though, so it'll be a bit choppy. This is the best the whole period has to offer, but it's not saying much.
The rest of the first week and into the second week? Dead. From Monday the 31st of August through to Monday the 7th of September, we're looking at long stretches with zero swell, or tiny 2ft to 3ft waves with weak energy. The wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore. There's a couple of clean afternoons on the 5th and 6th of September, but with no swell to ride, it's just a calm day on the beach. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.
So, bottom line: there's no surf to speak of. Don't bother waxing the board. This is a proper blank run for this area. Forecasts can change, but right now, you're better off finding something else to do.
Rusty.
