The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here.
Alright, let's have a look at what's coming our way for Cuyagua. This reef break is a fairly consistent spot, but honestly, the next couple of weeks look like a bit of a grind for decent waves. We've got swell running, but the wind is going to be the story, and it's mostly a messy one.
The forecast kicks off with some punchy energy. On Saturday the 18th of July, we've got nearly 7ft of swell from the ENE pushing in, with combined energy sitting at 252 (moderate) building to 453 (strong). It sounds promising, but the onshore wind is going to chop it up – that morning's cross-on breeze means poor conditions. That afternoon the wind picks up to 15 km/h and it's just as ugly.
The real highlight, and the only time I'd get seriously excited, is Sunday the 19th of July in the morning. The swell holds at a solid 6ft from the ENE, and the magic is in the wind. We're looking at glass – a 3 mph SE breeze that's going to leave the surface clean. The energy is strong at 366. This is your moment. The water temp is sitting at 79°, which is about average for this time of year. Get out there early because the afternoon brings back the cross-onshore and it's game over.
After that, it's a real rough patch. From Monday the 20th through to Wednesday the 22nd, the swell sticks around (5ft to 7ft) but the wind is relentless from the ENE, cross-on or cross, with gusts up to 9 mph. The water gets messy and the scores reflect poor to marginal conditions. It's not worth paddling out for.
We get a brief moment of calm on Thursday the 23rd of July morning – another glassy window with a light northerly, but the swell has dropped to 5ft with a combined energy of 165 (weak). You can get a wave, but it's ordinary.
From there, it's a long, boring stretch. From the 24th of July all the way through to the 2nd of August, the swell size bounces between 3ft and 6ft. The combined energy mostly sits under 200 (weak), and the wind is consistently cross-on, choppy, and from the ENE. There's a few glassy mornings on the 25th of July and 28th of July, but the swell is tiny (4ft or less). Not a standout in sight.
Honestly, the best bet in the entire 16-day window is that Sunday the 19th of July morning. The glassy conditions and solid 6ft groundswell from the ENE at Cuyagua reef could be really fun. Don't sleep on it.
Rusty.
