Table - best surf conditions forecast for Cuyagua over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here, looking at what’s on offer for Cuyagua over the next couple of weeks. It’s a mixed bag, but there are a few windows of clean, rideable surf if you’re keen to pick your moments.
The overall pattern is a bit stop-start. We’ve got a glassy NE swell coming through early on, but then a lot of choppy, cross-onshore junk rolls in mid-week. The best bet is to hit the early mornings when the wind drops out.
Sunday 12 July – This is the pick of the first few days. Cuyagua is a reef setup, and the morning is looking sweet: glassy conditions with a 5 ft NE swell, period a short 7 seconds, but the combined energy is moderate (229). The wind is light from the NNW, almost nothing, so it’ll be clean. It’s a fairly consistent spot, and crowds are possible, so get in early. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Monday 13 July – The morning has a slight 4 ft NE swell, but the wind is cross-onshore, and the forecast says poor. Afternoon is worse – cross-shore and choppy. Give it a miss.
Tuesday 14 July – Morning is your other standout. Glassy again, 5 ft NE swell, moderate energy (234). The wind is light from the NE, making for lovely clean faces. The short period means it’ll be a bit lumpy, but the conditions will make up for it. Afternoon turns cross-onshore and messy.
Wednesday 15 July to Sunday 20 July – This stretch is a write-off for good surf. The swell hangs around 5 ft to 8 ft, but the wind is cross-onshore from the ENE most of the time, often 9-12 mph, creating choppy, poor conditions. The combined energy gets up to 555 (strong) on the Wednesday afternoon, but with moderate cross-onshore wind and chop, it’s a no-go for a paddle board. On the bigger, wind-affected days, this beach-reef setup might look more interesting for a kite surfer than a regular surfer. There’s a gap of about a week with no real recommendations.
Monday 21 July – Afternoon shows a glimmer. A 7 ft ENE swell, moderate energy (508), with a light cross-shore wind from the east. It’s marginal, but the wind is better than the days before. Still, it’s a biggish swell for a reef, so only for the experienced.
Tuesday 22 July – Morning brings back the glass. A 5 ft ENE swell, moderate energy (224), and glassy conditions with a light northerly. This is a solid, clean option, similar to the first standout days. The short period means it’ll be a bit quick, but clean.
Wednesday 23 July to Monday 27 July – The last week fades out. The swell drops to 3 ft-6 ft, but the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the forecast is consistently poor. Very little to get excited about, and the combined energy drops to weak to moderate levels (103-254). The morning of the 27th has a 4 ft ENE swell but with onshore wind – not worth it.
In short, your best windows are the mornings of Sunday 12th, Tuesday 14th, and Tuesday 22nd July. The rest is mostly wind-slop. Crowds are possible at Cuyagua, so get there early on those glassy days.
Rusty.
