The Lowdown
Alright, listen up, crew. Rusty here, bringing you the latest look at what's cooking in our little corner of the world. We're looking at a pretty quiet stretch ahead, so let's keep it real.
The water is sitting at a warm 83°F, which is pretty much right where it should be for this time of year. The main show is at Cuyagua, a reef break that's fairly consistent and picks up swell from the north. It's a solid intermediate spot, but you'll have to share it sometimes.
The truth is, the next week and a half is looking pretty flat and messy. From Thursday the 20th right through to the end of August, the waves are just not cooperating. The swell is small and weak, with combined energy barely cracking 100 (92) to a modest 320 now and then. The period is short, around 6 to 7 seconds, so the waves will be weak and lacking push. On top of that, the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, making things choppy and messy. We're looking at a solid 10-day gap of poor surf conditions, with only a few mornings showing a slight chance of something rideable but still ordinary. It's a real bummer.
Now, there are a couple of little glimmers you might want to keep an eye on, but I wouldn't bank on them just yet. On Wednesday the 26th, the morning is looking glassy with offshore winds from the NNE, and the swell bumps up to 5 ft from the NE. The combined energy is a moderate 194. It's surfable, but the conditions are very ordinary. Then, on Monday the 31st of August, we have another glassy morning, this time with a 4 ft swell from the ENE and a combined energy of 180. Again, it's surfable but very ordinary. The rest of the afternoons are plagued by thunderstorms and choppy winds.
I'm not seeing any true standouts in this 16-day window. The best of a bad bunch is probably that glassy, offshore morning on Wednesday August 26th, but it's nothing to get excited about. The swell direction is from the NE, which is a good match for Cuyagua's optimum N direction, but the size and period are just too small to make it worthwhile.
Further out, things might start to look a little more interesting. Around the 30th of August, the swell period jumps up to 9 seconds, and the combined energy climbs to 336-414, which is a moderate energy. The wind stays light, but the swell direction is still a bit off. It's a long-range hope, so don't change your plans just yet.
So, there you have it. A long, flat spell with only a few very ordinary options. Keep the board waxed, but don't hold your breath. The forecasts can change, but right now, it's looking like a waiting game. Rusty signing off.
