The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll level with you – the next couple of weeks at Cuyagua are looking pretty grim. The forecast is a long stretch of sloppy, wind-affected conditions with no real standouts on the horizon. There’s a bit of swell kicking around, but the wind is just ruining it for most of the period, and the quality never gets there.
We’re looking at Wednesday the 15th through to Sunday the 26th of July, with hardly a session worth getting excited about. The swell keeps coming in from the ENE, around 5ft to 8ft, with a short period of just 7 seconds – that’s weak, wind-swell energy, not the good stuff. The combined energy sits anywhere from 131 (weak) up to 565 (moderate) on the 18th, but it doesn’t matter because the wind is cross-on or cross-shore from the NE or ENE, blowing 10 to 12 mph, keeping the surface choppy and messy. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing out of the ordinary.
The only slight glimmer in the whole run comes on Tuesday the 21st of July morning, when the wind swings light onshore from the north at just 3 mph. It’s still a marginal call – the swell is 6ft from the ENE with a 7-second period, and the combined energy is 282 (moderate). But with that light wind, it *might* clean up enough for a few grovelly ones. Honestly, it’s a one-star day at best, and the tide could mess with it. The same goes for Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd mornings – light offshore from the NNW or north, 3 to 6 mph, with 5ft to 5ft ENE swell – but again, it’s marginal. The swell is too short-period and the quality just isn’t there.
Saturday the 26th of July morning sees a brief window with light offshore from the NNW at 3 mph, but the swell has dropped to 4ft from the NE, and the combined energy is a weak 131. It’s poor surf, no two ways about it.
The takeaway? There’s no standout, no proper groundswell, no clean, rippable waves. The consistent ENE wind and short-period swell mean this is more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddling one. The breaks are all exposed, and the conditions just won’t come together. Stay patient, mate. It’s a flat spell, but it won’t last forever, and forecasts can change.
Rusty.
