The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down this next stretch.

Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window is a real struggle. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with nothing but small, weak dribble for the first week and a half. The surf just isn’t happening. From Tuesday the 4th of August all the way through to the 12th, every single session is marked as poor surf conditions. The swell heights are locked in between 0.7ft and 1ft, with periods all over the shop but mostly short and weak. The combined energy is barely a whisper – mostly two-digit numbers like 18, 20, or 25 – telling you there’s just no power in the water. The wind is cross-offshore from the east, which would be a nice angle if there was anything to ride, but there isn’t. It’s a flat spell, plain and simple.

Now, things start to shift a little by Thursday the 13th of August. We see a bit of a pulse showing up. The swell bumps up to 1ft on Thursday morning, and by the afternoon it’s hitting 2ft from the WNW with a period stretching to 18 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, which means better shape but longer wait times between sets. The combined energy jumps to 258 (moderate), so there’s finally some grunt. Friday the 14th of August morning holds that 2ft from the WNW with a 17-second period, and energy stays solid at 258. The wind is clean, cross-off from the east, but the size is still tiny. It’s not a standout by any stretch – these waves are for the longboarders or maybe a fun session on a foamie. The crowds at Ehukai/Gums are often, so expect a few heads out for this little bump.

The best on offer – and I say that loosely – falls on Friday the 14th of August afternoon and Saturday the 15th of August morning. Friday afternoon holds 2ft from the WNW with a 17-second period and 243 energy. Saturday morning is similar, 2ft from the west, 15-second period, 184 energy. The wind is a fresh breeze from the east, still cross-off, keeping the surface clean. It’s not a day to call in sick for, but if you’re jonesing, you’ll get a few little peelers at Ehukai/Gums. The direction is a bit south of the optimum NW, but it’s what we’ve got. After Saturday, it fades back into the 1ft-2ft range with energy dropping, and the last few days of the forecast are nothing to write home about.

Water temp is about average for this time of year, so no need to worry about a wetsuit or a rashie.

Overall, this is a dead period. The first 9 days are a total write-off, and the second week offers only a slight, underwhelming pulse. It’s the kind of stretch where you check the forecast, shrug, and go find something else to do.

Rusty.
