The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for our stretch of coast. Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – it's a tough outlook. We're looking at a real flat spell coming in, so don't be in a rush to wax up.
For the next week and a half, it's pretty much a write-off. The data shows a run of small, weak, and messy swell with poor surf conditions day after day. You're looking at a lot of cross-onshore winds and choppy sea states with tiny wave heights. The combined wave energy stays low, mostly in the teens and twenties (like 17 to 46) – just not enough oomph to get any decent shape. We've got a couple of mornings around the 22nd and 23rd of September where the wind goes cross-offshore and the surface cleans right up, but the swell is barely a ripple at 0.3ft with a period of 12 to 13 seconds. That's a long-period groundswell, which would usually be promising, but there's just no height to work with. It's a clean, glassy-looking ocean with nothing to ride.
The water temp is running much warmer than normal at 67°F on the 13th of September. That's a good 5°F above average, so you might get away with a shortie if you're paddling out, but again, there's no surf to speak of.
After that, from the 25th of September right through to at least the 28th, we've got zero swell on the charts. The combined energy reads 0. The wind stays cross-offshore, so it'll look pretty, but it's a total flat spell. A couple of tiny pulses might try to creep back in around the 27th and 28th, but we're talking 0.3ft with a period of 10 to 13 seconds and onshore or cross-shore wind. That's not going to do anything.
So what's the call? For East Wittering, this is a blank run. There are no standouts, no windows of decent surf. The setup is a sheltered beach and groyne, best with a SW swell, but we just aren't getting the juice. With the stronger winds and onshore conditions we see around the 19th of September, it'd be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, honestly. For the rest of us, keep the board in the car and wait for the next change. Forecasts can always turn, but as it stands, it's a long dry spell.
Rusty.
