The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one. The next 16 days look flat, real flat. We’ve got a patch of something that might almost be surfable right at the very end, but it’s a long wait and nothing to get excited about.

For the first ten days, from Tuesday the 4th of August right through to the afternoon of Friday the 14th of August, it’s basically a write-off. The swell is tiny, mostly around 1ft to 2ft from the SW or SSW, and the wind is either onshore or cross-onshore. The combined wave energy is weak to moderate at best, mostly below 300. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild. Dolphin Street is an advanced, inconsistent spot that rarely breaks, and when it does, it’s not happening here. The setup is a beach or reef, but with this onshore wind and weak swell, it’s more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle session. Honestly, you’d be better off doing something else.

Then we get a tiny glimmer. On Saturday morning the 15th of August, the swell lifts slightly to 3ft from the SSW, with a period of 16 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, which means better shaped waves but longer waits between sets. The wind is light and onshore, so it’ll be a bit bumpy. The combined energy hits 363 (moderate). The rating is still a marginal 1/10, so it’s only for the dedicated. Crowds are often here, so expect a few others waiting for the same small sets. The break is exposed to the swell, and the direction is SSW, which is not the optimum WNW, so it’ll be a bit wonky.

Sunday morning the 16th of August is similar – 3ft, 16 second period, light onshore wind, combined energy 344. Still marginal. After that, it drops back to tiny, messy surf with poor conditions through to the end of the forecast. The long period (15-19 seconds) means the swell is clean-ish but breaks straight at beach breaks, so it’s a bit of a gamble. For a reef or point, it might be better, but here it’s just small and weak.

So, the best on offer? If you’re desperate, Saturday the 15th or Sunday the 16th of August mornings. But it’s a poor outlook. For an inconsistent spot like Dolphin Street, this kind of blank run is pretty normal. Don’t hold your breath.

Rusty.
