The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here again, lookin' at the same picture in freedom units. And let me tell you, Crash Boat is going through a rough one. We’re looking at a full 16-day outlook, but the first week-plus is a total blank. From now until the end of August, it’s a desert. The swell is junk – barely a foot high, with periods so short the waves have no guts. The combined wave energy is stuck in the single digits (weak energy). It’s just flat or ankle-high dribble day after day.

You’d think the offshore winds from the NE and ENE would be a blessing for that sheltered west-facing break, but without any swell to wrap in, it’s just a slick, empty ocean. Crowds can be a factor here when it’s firing, but right now you won’t see a soul.

There is one tiny spot of hope, and it’s a long way down the line. On Tuesday, September 1st, we finally see a little bump. The morning brings a 2 to 3-foot south swell, combined energy at 26 (moderate energy), and a light offshore breeze. Then in the afternoon, it holds at about 3-foot from the south, but the wind goes completely glassy – dead calm from the NNW. That’s the cleanest the surface will be. But here’s the kicker: the period is only 4 to 5 seconds. That’s pure windswell. For a beach and reef setup like Crash Boat, that short-period energy just won’t wrap in clean; it’ll jack up and close out.

Don’t get your hopes up for Wednesday, the 2nd either. A 1 to 2-foot south swell with a 6-second period and combined energy of 21 (moderate energy) isn’t gonna save the week.

This is a long, dry run. The only true standout, if you can call it that, is that glassy afternoon on September 1st. But for a spot that usually needs a proper groundswell to work, this is really just a chance to get wet without getting thrashed. If you’re a kiter, the wind might come through eventually, but for us paddle surfers, it’s a quiet time. Keep the board in the car for another season.

Rusty.
