The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Let me tell you, it’s a tough stretch ahead for our local lineup at Crash Boat. We’ve got a 16-day window here, and honestly, there isn’t a single decent wave on offer. The whole period is a write-off for paddle surfing.
From this Friday morning the 17th of July right through to Saturday the 1st of August, the swell is tiny. We're looking at swell heights of just 0.3ft to 0.7ft, coming from the south with a period that’s mostly around 5 seconds – that’s weak, short-period windswell with hardly any push. The combined energy is pitiful, sitting at 2 (2) or lower, often just 1 or even 0. The water temp is 84°F with a 1°F anomaly, so it’s about average for this time of year, but that’s not much comfort when there’s nothing to ride.
The wind is offshore most of the time, which would usually be a major positive, but with no swell, it’s just a clean, empty ocean. On Wednesday the 22nd of July morning it goes glassy, and there are a few days with glassy or offshore conditions, but the wave comment is consistently “poor surf conditions” and the score is a flat 0 out of 10.
Because this break is a sheltered beach and reef setup, the lack of swell is pretty normal for this area when there’s nothing moving in. Even though the wind is good, the energy just isn’t there. If it were bigger, the offshore winds and consistent conditions might make it interesting for kite surfing, but as it stands, it’s a flat spell. Forecasts can change, but right now, don't bother paddling out until we see something new.
Rusty.
