The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let's have a look at what's cooking for Copacabana over the next couple of weeks.
First off, I gotta be straight with you: the first week is a bit of a write-off. We're looking at a good 10 days of pretty ordinary conditions before anything gets interesting. The water is sitting at 73°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so that's a nice surprise if you're having a paddle.
The swell direction is generally from the north, which is almost the opposite of what the break really wants. The first real whisper of life doesn't show up until the morning of Sunday, July 27th. You'll see a bit of a pulse from the northwest with a period of 11 seconds, but the combined energy is only moderate (162). The wind is glassy though, which is a major positive for clean conditions. Waves are tiny, around 2ft.
The session to aim for is the morning of Tuesday, July 29th. This is the standout. The NW swell hits a solid 4ft with a period of 11 seconds, and the combined energy is strong (387). The wind is glassy, which means clean, peeling waves. It's a bit punchy for beginners at that size, but for the intermediates, this is the best window we've got. The wind stays light and the swell direction finally matches the optimum northwest window.
The Thursday morning, July 30th is also worth a mention, with a 4ft NW swell and glassy conditions, energy is strong (468). You'll get a few good ones before the wind shifts.
After that, the energy drops right off into the start of August, with a lot of wind and very small surf. The final kicker on Monday, August 3rd is a total dud, with a weak 1.0ft swell and a choppy cross-onshore wind.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a flat spell. The best bet is the morning of Tuesday, July 29th—clean, solid NW swell, and the best chance for a proper wave. Keep an eye on the Thursday morning as a backup. After that, it's back to the drawing board.
Rusty.
