Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here with the Copacabana outlook. Truth is, it’s a tough run – barely a decent wave in sight, and the wind is nearly always stuffing things up. The first week is all tiny, weak swell, mostly under 2ft, with combined wave energy mostly under 100 – that’s real weak (like 24 to 85). Wind is mostly cross-off or cross-on, a few glassy moments, but the swell is too small to ride. The best you’ll get is Sunday 5 July morning: 2ft from the NW at 11 seconds – a long-period groundswell – with cross-off ENE breeze at 9 mph. Water temp is 71°F, which is 5° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s much warmer than average, a nice surprise, but the surf is just 76 energy – weak. It’s clean, but tiny. For beginners, it’s fine; for everyone else, it’s frustrating. Then there’s a big gap from Monday 6 July through to Sunday 12 July – mostly zeros – with only a few surfable-but-ordinary moments: Monday 6 July morning (2ft NW, 9 seconds, 70 energy) and Wednesday 15 July morning (2ft NNW, 6 seconds, 51 energy, glassy) – still too small. From Thursday 16 July, the swell finally builds, but the wind stays bad. By Friday 17 July morning, 5ft from NNW at 9 seconds, cross-on W at 12 mph – energy jumps to 293 (moderate), but choppy. Friday afternoon: 6ft NW at 9 seconds, cross-on WNW at 16 mph – energy hits 516 (strong) – still messy. Saturday 18 July: morning 6ft NW 9 seconds, cross-on W 9 mph (460 energy), afternoon 6ft NW 9 seconds, cross-on WNW 16 mph (639 energy – strong). That’s the biggest swell, but all cross-on and fairly choppy. For experts, the size is okay but the quality is poor; for beginners, anything over 5ft is too big. With strong cross-onshore wind and significant swell at a beach break, it’s looking more like a kite-surf session than a paddle one. Copacabana can fire, but not this time. Keep an eye out – conditions can turn, but right now it’s a flat spell with a bumpy end. Rusty.
