The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you – the next sixteen days at Copacabana are looking like a tough stretch for decent waves. The whole period is pretty much a bust, with barely a moment that’s worth paddling out for.
We start off with a real flat spell. From Tuesday the 14th all the way through to Sunday the 19th, we’re looking at ankle-to-knee-high dribble, with the swell energy hovering around a measly 16 to 45 (weak energy). The wind is all over the place, mostly cross or cross-on, and the water’s a touch warmer than normal at 71°. It’s just not happening.
The energy picks up a bit around Monday the 20th, with a 4ft NE swell pushing energy up to 154 (moderate), but the wind goes cross-shore and it gets chopped up. By Tuesday the 21st, we finally see a little pulse – 6ft NE swell with a 7-second period and energy hitting 314 (moderate). The wind is a gentle cross-shore, and the report says "marginal" at best (score 1/10). Honestly, that’s the only window that even flickers with life, but it’s still not clean, and at 6ft with a short period, it’s just lumpy.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. There’s a long gap of nothing worth mentioning until Friday the 24th, when we get a 3ft NW swell with a long 14-second period, but the wind is cross-onshore, making it choppy. The energy is strong at 348, but it’s wasted.
Then, on Saturday the 25th, we get the biggest swell of the whole forecast – 7ft NW, 10-second period, and energy screaming at 855 (strong energy). But again, the wind is cross-onshore, and the report says "marginal" at best. That’s a lot of water moving around, but with the wind on it, it’s going to be a washing machine. Definitely only for the experts if you’re brave enough to try.
The rest of the week into July 29th is a repeat of the same story: waist-to-chest high NW swell, but always with some cross-onshore or onshore wind messing it up. The energy stays moderate to strong, but the quality is just never there.
So, the honest truth? There’s no standout session here. The 21st might offer the only *slightly* less terrible window, but it’s a long shot. If you’re desperate, the 25th has the size, but it’s a messy, expert-only affair. This is a classic Rio winter flat spell. Don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
