The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about Copacabana in feet and miles. It’s a grim outlook for the most part. The swell is tiny and the conditions are just ordinary for days. The first real sign of anything doesn’t show up until Monday the 20th of July, and even then it’s only a marginal 5ft from the north with a short period of 7 seconds and a weak energy reading. The wind is light offshore from the NW in the morning, so that’s something, but it’s nothing to get excited about.
From there, it’s a whole lot of nothing. The swell stays small, mostly under 3ft, and the wind is all over the place – onshore, cross-shore, you name it. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, about 3°F above average, which is a nice detail but doesn’t fix the lack of waves.
The first real standout in this whole forecast is a long way off. On Tuesday the 28th of July, the afternoon sees a jump in size to 5ft from the NW with a long period of 13 seconds, packing a strong energy reading. The wind is onshore from the NW though, so it’s going to be a bit messy. The real promise is for the following morning, Wednesday the 29th of July, but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore from the WNW, making that 6ft NW swell (12-second period, strong energy) a lumpy, blown-out mess. Not great for a paddle.
But then, Thursday the 30th of July – that’s the one to circle. The morning brings a solid 8ft swell from the NW with an 11-second period, and the energy is huge. The wind is a light 6 mph cross-onshore from the west, which is manageable. By the afternoon, it’s even bigger at 10ft from the NW, period 12 seconds, and very strong energy. The wind is a gentle 9 mph cross-onshore from the north. The forecast notes say the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. This is strictly for experts only – over 8ft, it’s a big, powerful groundswell. It’s a beach break, so that long period (11-12 seconds) might make it a bit straight and dumpy, but for the experienced crew, this is the session. The following days drop off again in size, with the wind staying cross-onshore, so it’s not worth chasing.
For the rest of the month, it’s a dry spell. The morning of Saturday the 1st of August only has a 5ft NW swell but the wind is onshore, so it’s a write-off. Honestly, if you’re looking for a clean, fun wave, this forecast is a tough one. The only real chance for a proper wave is that Thursday the 30th, and only if you’ve got the experience and don’t mind a bit of chop. For everyone else, it might be a good time to double-check the forecast again in a few days – things can change.
