The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's shaping up for our stretch of coast. The word on the water is pretty clear: if you're looking for a quick hit this weekend, you might be better off with a cold one, as we've got a gap of a few days with no real surf on offer. But for those with patience, the second half of the window starts to look a whole lot more interesting.
Right now, and through this coming weekend, it's a tale of small, clean waves with strong winds. From Saturday the 12th through Monday the 14th, we're seeing small SW groundswell around 1ft to 2.3ft, but the cross-off winds from the ENE are pretty persistent, creating mushy, marginal conditions. The combined swell energy is moderate, sitting in the 135 to 370 range, but it's all a bit too weak and wind-affected to get excited about. There's pretty much nothing recommended for a proper session.
Things stay pretty quiet and blown out through the middle of the week. Tuesday the 15th sees a slight bump with the combined energy reaching 499, but the onshore flow kills it. By Thursday the 17th, the swell shifts to a short-period 7.2ft ENE windswell, but it's accompanied by a stiff 22 mph cross-off wind. That’s a lot of bump for very little reward.
The real standout, and the only one I'd mark on your calendar, lands at Canoes on Thursday the 24th of September. After a long stretch of average conditions, the stars finally align. The wind turns super light, with a glassy cross-off breeze as light as 3 mph, and the water will be clean with barely a ripple on it. We’ve got a solid 4.6ft E swell pushing in with a moderate 10-second period, and the combined energy is a healthy 696. This is the pick of the bunch. The swell direction matches up nicely with what this exposed spot needs, and for a break that's very consistent, with an exposed setup, this is your window. The water temp is about average for the time of year.
Then, rolling into Friday the 25th, it's still very good. Another day with 4.6ft ENE swell, a nice 11-second period, and light 9 mph winds. The energy is still strong at 632. If you can't make Thursday, Friday morning is your next best shot.
After that, the swell drops down again, but the winds stay light for a few cleaner, smaller sessions. The bottom line: save your energy for that Thursday-Friday window. It’s the only true gem on the horizon.
