The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, checkin' in with the long-range look for Kaisers.

The next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a solid start with some clean, fun-sized swell, but there’s a whole lotta wind and chop to work through after that. The real standout is right at the beginning, so you’ll want to jump on it.

Kaisers is a reef that handles an SSE swell best, but it's exposed enough to pick up plenty of other stuff too. The water's sitting at 80°, which is bang on average for this time of year – no surprises there.

Wednesday, July 29th is your golden ticket. Early morning you’ve got a clean 6 ft swell pouring in from the ENE with a 10-second period. The wind is glassy, light from the NNE at just 3 mph. That’s gonna be smooth as silk. The wave energy is sitting at a solid moderate (909). Expect very good surf. It can get a crowd here sometimes, but on a Wednesday with conditions this good? Might be worth the company. The afternoon cleans up even more with 5 ft from the same direction and glassy 3 mph winds from the ENE.

Thursday, July 30th starts to fall apart. Morning winds swing E at 12 mph, turning things cross and choppy. The swell’s still a decent 5 ft but the quality drops fast. That afternoon sees a weird spike in period to 18 seconds from the SSW, but the wave height drops to 2 ft – not much to work with.

From Friday, July 31st right through until the end of the first week of August, it’s a battle with strong wind. Kaisers is getting hammered by ENE winds from 22 to 28 mph. The swell sticks around in the 6 ft to 10 ft range, but those are 8-second windswells, and with that much breeze it’s going to be blown-out and messy. Not your day for a paddle, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

Tuesday, August 4th could be a sneaky second option. The wind drops back to a light breeze from the NE at 6 mph, and the swell is a clean 5 ft with a long 12-second period from the ENE. Good energy (735) and expected to be very good surf. The long period means it’ll have some grunt, and on a reef like Kaisers it should shape up nicely. The downside is the morning is cloudy, but that wind is clean.

After that, it’s a slow bleed into smaller, weaker SW groundswell from the 9th of August through the 13th. We’re talking 2 ft to 3 ft waves, mostly from the SSW and S with periods up to 18 seconds, but the wind is either howling from the ENE or we’ve got a risk of thunderstorms. Not much to get excited about. The energy drops to weak levels (under 400) on most of those days.

Bottom line: you paddle out Wednesday morning, July 29th, for the best surf on offer. And maybe keep your eye on Tuesday, August 4th, for a second chance at some cleaner waves with a bit more punch.

Rusty.
