The Lowdown
Alright folks, let’s have a look at what’s on offer. I’m Rusty, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Cannons. Gotta be straight with you – the next 16 days look pretty grim for a proper paddle. There’s a massive gap of flat, junk conditions right through the start.
We kick off on Friday the 31st of July, but it’s not worth a second look. Tiny 1 ft of short-period, cross-onshore slop. The combined energy is a weak 22, and it’s just a mess. That poor run doesn’t let up. We’re looking at a solid 4-day gap of nothing but lousy, onshore wind and tiny waves. Saturday the 1st of August is almost flat, and Sunday the 2nd sees a jump in height to 7 ft, but the wind is still cross-on and the energy is moderate at 717 – it’s just a choppy, blown-out mess. That onshore flow sticks around right through the end of the first week.
The only flicker of hope comes on Tuesday the 4th of August. The swell drops to 5 ft, but the period stretches to a very long 12 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell, with moderate energy (620). The wind is still onshore though, so it’s only a marginal call. You’d be fighting chop.
Things finally, *finally* turn around on Friday the 14th of August. The wind drops right out. By Friday afternoon, we’ve got a glassy surface and a 3 ft groundswell rolling in from the west at a very long 16 seconds. The energy is moderate (374). That’s the first decent window. And then Saturday the 15th of August? That’s your standout. Clean, glassy conditions, with a 3 ft west swell holding at a long 14 seconds. The combined energy is 320. It’s not big, but it’ll be clean, lined up, and perfect for a longboard or a funshape. For a reef break like Cannons, that long-period west swell is the ticket. Just know that this spot sees crowds often, so expect company.
The long-range promise is there, but it’s a long wait. The forecast is more reliable for the Saturday, so keep your fingers crossed.
Rusty, signing off.
