Table - best surf conditions forecast for Campbells over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve only got one break to look at for this forecast period, so let’s get into it.
Alright, straight up – this is not a classic run for Campbells. We're looking at a long stretch of marginal to poor conditions, with the first surfable days not really showing any standout quality. For the first week, from July 9th through to about July 16th, it’s mostly small surf with solid onshore or cross-off winds at 15 to 22 mph. The swell is tiny, mostly around 2 ft to 3 ft, with a mix of short-period S swell and then a shift to W groundswell. The wave energy is moderate – we see readings around 139 to 700 (combined energy). But with that wind, it’s not worth paddling out for.
There's a slight bump in size on Saturday July 11th and Sunday July 12th with S/WSW groundswell at 2 ft to 3 ft and a solid 16 to 18 second period. That's groundswell quality, and the wind goes offshore at times, so it might be clean. But the height is still too small to get excited about, and this is an exposed reef break that is inconsistent. It rarely fires, and when it does, it needs the right swell direction. The optimum is SSW, so anything from the SW or S is only just scraping in.
Honestly, the best on offer in the whole period looks to be Tuesday July 14th and Wednesday July 15th. The swell direction shifts to W (15–16 second period) and the combined energy jumps to strong levels – 679 to 700. The height is still small at 2 ft to 3 ft. That's a long-period W groundswell, which prefers point breaks and reefs over beach breaks, and this spot is a reef, so it might just line up nicely. The wind is cross-off from the E/ENE at 15–18 mph, which is clean but not totally glassy. The water temperature is 80°F, which is about average for this time of year (anomaly of 0.7°F). For a break that’s often crowded, the small size and inconsistent nature might keep the numbers down, but don't count on it.
After that, we drift back into mediocrity. The waves get smaller again, with a few days of S/SSW swell and moderate energy, but the wind stays cross-off and the quality is poor. Even the later days around July 20th to 21st show a little pulse of S groundswell at 3 ft with offshore wind, which sounds good, but the forecast calls it marginal due to tide or other issues. It’s promising, but with this spot being inconsistent, I wouldn’t plan a trip around it.
Overall, this is a lean period for Campbells. The second week is even quieter, with smaller waves and fewer promising signs. If you're desperate for a paddle, the best window is around July 14th and 15th for that clean, long-period W groundswell at 2 ft to 3 ft. Just don't expect barrels.
Stay patient, the ocean will come around.
Rusty.
