The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up at Campbells over the next couple of weeks.
First up, the water temp is sitting about average for the time of year, nothing weird going on there. The break is a reef setup, and it’s inconsistent, so it’s not one of those spots that fires every day. When it’s on, though, it’s a gem.
Right now, we’ve got a bit of a slow start. Wednesday the 15th July has a long-period 15s groundswell rolling in from the west at 3 ft, with clean conditions in the afternoon thanks to a light cross-offshore breeze. The energy is moderate (547), but it’s not a standout. Thursday the 16th morning is clean but the wind picks up, and by the afternoon a fresh breeze kills it. Friday the 17th through to Sunday the 19th are pretty grim – strong winds and poor surf quality, with energy dropping into the 200s. That’s a stretch of days you can skip.
Now, Monday the 20th July starts to look better. The swell hangs around 3 ft from the south, with a 16s period and moderate energy (491). The afternoon has a proper offshore breeze, making for clean, lined-up waves. That’s a good session for the confident intermediate.
The next real highlight comes on Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th July. Saturday morning has a light offshore breeze, 3 ft SSW swell with a 19s period, and energy pushing up to 825 – that’s strong, punchy stuff. The afternoon bumps up to 4 ft from the SSW with an 18s period and energy nearly 1000 (997). Offshore winds and a reef break handling that long period beautifully. Sunday the 26th keeps the good vibes with 3 ft to 3 ft SSW swell, 16s period, and light to moderate offshore winds. These two days are the standouts of the whole outlook: clean, solid, and that long-period groundswell will be cranking down the line. Get on it.
After that, Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th fade back into poor conditions with strong winds and low energy. The window closes again.
So, the pick of the bunch is Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th July at Campbells. It’s inconsistent, so when it’s this good, you don’t sleep on it. Crowds are likely, but that’s the price for a reef that’s handling 18 to 19s groundswell with offshore winds.
Rusty.
