The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for this stretch of coast. I’ve got to be straight with you – the outlook is a bit of a flat spell, and there’s really not a lot to get excited about. The first time we see any wave action at all kicks off Monday morning, the 24th of August, but it’s tiny. We’re talking about a sandy bottomed sandbar break at Calle Hermosa, which is an exposed spot that’s best for beginners when it’s working. The water temp is sitting at 88°, which feels a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least it’ll be pleasant for a float.
The whole 16-day window is plagued by “poor surf conditions” – the energy is just not there. On Monday morning the 24th, we might see a tiny 1 ft swell from the southwest with a period of only 4 seconds, which is just windswell and won't have any punch. The combined energy is a measly 2 (weak). The morning is glassy, though, with the wind coming from the WSW at 3 mph, so it’ll be clean, but there’s nothing to ride. Monday afternoon turns choppy with a cross-onshore wind. Tuesday the 25th is the same story – a waist-high 1 ft swell from the southwest, still with that short 4-second period, combined energy of 5 (weak). The morning is glassy again, but the risk of thunderstorms is there. It’s just not surfable, even for a beginner.
The pattern doesn’t change. Wednesday the 26th drops to 0.7 ft, Thursday the 27th might bump up to a 2 ft from the SW, but with a 3-second period – that’s just bumpy, wind-affected junk. The best combo we see across the whole 16 days is actually a few glassy mornings with a clean surface, but the swell height never reaches a point where it’s worth paddling out. For example, Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th of August have glassy mornings with a 0.7 ft swell from the SSE, but the energy is either 4 or 5 (weak). The period is 5 seconds, which is short and weak.
We do have a couple of days with a cross-offshore wind, like Friday the 4th of September morning, with a WNW wind at 6 mph, and Saturday the 5th of September morning with a WNW wind at 3 mph, keeping the surface clean. But the swell is still 0.7 ft from the WSW, with a period of 3 seconds, and combined energy of only 1 (non-existent). You could float on a bodyboard, but there’s zero wave face.
Honestly, this is a blank run. The break is inconsistent at the best of times, and this forecast shows it doesn’t get any better. There’s no standout, no real surf to chase. The best call is to leave the boards in the car and maybe check the forecast again in a week. The setup is so poor that if you’re desperate for a session, you might be better off looking for a spot that catches a different wind, but here, it’s a no-go.
This area has a tendency to go quiet like this, so don’t be too bummed. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, you’re better off doing something else.
Rusty.
