The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got to be straight with you – the next couple of weeks at Cable Bay are looking pretty grim. This is a real flat spell, and the forecast is basically a long stretch of nothing worth paddling out for. We’re talking about 13 days of poor surf, so don’t hold your breath. The only faint glimmer of life comes right at the very end of the window.

The water temp is sitting at 55°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The first real sign of any swell arrives on Wednesday the 29th of July. The morning sees a jump in energy, with a combined swell energy of 245 (moderate). Swell is 6ft from the NNW, but it’s short period at 6 seconds, so it’ll be a bit weak and crumbly. It’s also a cross-shore wind from the SW at 10 mph, which isn’t ideal. The afternoon gets a bit more grunt: 7ft from the NNW, period lifting to 8 seconds, and the energy jumps to 520 (strong). The wind goes light onshore from the NW at 5 mph, but it’s still a marginal call. That 7ft is getting solid, and with a short period, it’ll be a messy, lumpy wave. This is only for the experienced crew.

Then Thursday the 30th of July morning offers a little cleanup. The swell drops to 3ft from the north, period 8 seconds, with a combined energy of 142 (moderate). The wind goes glassy from the WSW at 5 mph, which is a nice change. This is the pick of the whole forecast, but it’s still only a surfable wave with very ordinary conditions. It’s a small, clean wave – maybe a longboarder’s session if you’re desperate.

After that, it’s straight back to poor conditions. The wind swings onshore from the NNW on Thursday afternoon and Friday, bringing rain and chop, and the swell fades away to nothing.

Honestly, for the next two weeks, this is a write-off. If you’ve got a kite, the bigger, windier afternoons from the 25th of July might have something for you, but for a surfboard, it’s a waiting game.

Rusty.
