The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Broulee Main Beach (S end) over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, it’s a bit of a slow start. The first few days are pretty flat and not worth paddling out for. The water temp is sitting at 63°F which is about average for this time of year, nothing wild there.
The first real sign of life comes on Sunday the 19th. The morning gets glassy, with a light NW wind, and the swell bumps up to 4ft from the ENE with a period of 12 seconds. That’s a nice long-period groundswell, which usually means more energy and better shaped waves, though at a beach break like this it can sometimes straighten out. The combined energy is moderate (491). It’s a beginner-friendly spot so the size is okay, but crowds can pop up here sometimes. Definitely the best morning of the first week.
Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st have some fun-sized swell around 5ft to 4ft, but the wind swings around and the conditions get a bit mixed – not terrible, but not as clean as Sunday.
By Wednesday the 22nd the swell drops back, and we go into a bit of a quiet spell with small, weak waves through to the end of the month. The morning of Wednesday the 23rd has some glassy 5ft S swell but it’s short-period (6 seconds), so it’ll be a bit gutless and messy.
Now, looking further out, there’s a standout window on Thursday the 31st of July. The afternoon cleans up with a moderate WNW offshore wind, blowing at 12 mph, and the swell is 5ft from the SSE, period 8 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (290). The wind is clean and offshore, so the waves will be well-shaped, but the size is getting up there – over 5ft – so it might be a bit much for beginners. For the more experienced crew, that’s a solid session.
The best of the whole run, though, is the morning of Friday the 1st of August. Offshore wind from the west at 6 mph, glassy conditions, and a clean 2ft S swell. It’s not big, but it’ll be clean and tidy. The energy is low (107), so it’s a small-wave board kind of day.
So, overall: Sunday the 19th morning is the clear standout for the first week, and Friday the 1st of August morning is the pick of the second week – but it’s small, so don’t expect a big day.
Rusty.
