The Lowdown
Alright, I gotta be straight with you – the next two weeks here are looking pretty bleak. We're talking about a long stretch of poor surf conditions from August 26th all the way through to September 8th. That's a solid two-week dry spell where there's really nothing rideable on offer. The waves are either non-existent or they're getting hammered by strong cross-onshore winds that are just blowing everything out. We do see some decent swell sizes pop up, with waves around 5 ft to 8 ft on a few days, but the wind is just never your friend. It's almost always a strong cross-onshore mess, making the surf lumpy and choppy.
The one little glimmer in this whole outlook comes on the final day of the forecast, Wednesday, September 9th. The early morning shows the wind finally swinging offshore from the East at 19 mph. That's the real deal. You'll get a clean, glassy surface on a small, long-period groundswell rolling in from the WNW at 5 ft with a period of 8 seconds. The energy is still modest, but with that offshore wind, it'll be the best-looking wave in the entire two weeks. It's not a standout by any stretch, but it's the only time you'll get a clean face to work with. The water temp is about 64° which is normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
For this one break, Brandenburg Westerland (Sylt) is your only option. On that Wednesday morning, the 9th of September, if you're desperate, it'll be the one time worth paddling out. For the rest of it, leave your board in the car.
