The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, giving you the straight-up on the surf for the next couple of weeks.
Well, I gotta be honest with you, it’s a lean stretch for Bore. The next 16 days are a real mixed bag, and most of it is just not worth paddling out for. There’s a massive gap of nothing but poor conditions right through the end of August and into the first week of September. We’re talking day after day of onshore or strong cross-shore winds, short-period junk, and just plain ugly surf. It’s a long, blank run.
But if you’re patient, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The one real standout, and the only time I’d get excited, is on Monday the 7th of September. The morning session is where it’s at. We’ve got a solid 4ft swell rolling in from the NW, with a nice 11-second period – that’s a proper groundswell that'll have some punch. The wind is glassy, dead calm, which means the surface will be like a mirror. The combined energy is a solid 461, so there’s a good amount of power in the water. This is the best on offer by a long shot. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
Now, be aware that the afternoon of that same day sees a jump in size to 8ft, but the wind swings and the period drops, so it gets messy. For the rest of the second week, there are a few other moments with surfable waves, but the conditions are always compromised by wind. The swell is either too short-period or the wind is just wrong. You’ll see some size on the 5th and 6th, with 13ft to 16ft swells, but that’s way too big for this spot – it’s expert-only stuff, and the wind is onshore, making it a total washout. Stick with that Monday morning window.
