The Lowdown
Alright, folks, let’s get into it. Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you: the next 16 days are looking pretty grim for Hvide Sande. We’ve got a long stretch of onshore wind and messy conditions, so don’t rush to wax your board just yet. The first real chance of a wave that’s worth talking about doesn’t show up until early September, and then there’s a promising one a few days later, but it’s a long grind to get there.
Right now, through the end of August and into the first days of September, it’s a rough picture. The wind is mostly cross-on or onshore, the swell is short-period and junky, and the water temp is sitting at 64°, which is about normal for this time of year. The combined wave energy on the 23rd of August is a moderate 559, but it’s a messy 7ft NW swell with a period of just 8 seconds and a strong 25 mph cross-on wind. That’s not surf for anyone. It’s a washing machine. For a few days after that, the swell drops right off – we’re talking 0.3ft to 1ft, with energy readings as low as 1 or 2. That’s a flat spell, pure and simple. Nothing to do but watch the horizon.
We get a slight pulse on the 28th of August afternoon, with a 4ft WSW swell at 6 seconds and 128 moderate energy, but the wind is cross-on and choppy. Not worth a paddle. Then on the 30th of August, a 6ft WSW swell at 7 seconds pops up with 269 energy, but again, cross-on wind and a risk of thunderstorms. It’s just not clean.
The first glimmer of hope comes on the 4th of September, Friday morning. It’s a 6ft WNW swell, period of 6 seconds, with a combined energy of 220. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the NNE at just 3 mph, described as a slight air. That’s clean. The forecast says “expect good surf conditions,” and for Hvide Sande, that’s a serious standout. But it’s a beach and point break, so with that 6ft, it’s manageable for most, though the period is short, so the waves will be a bit crumbly and not as powerful. Still, it’s the best we’ve seen in a while.
Then, the real standout. On the 7th of September, Monday morning, we’ve got a 8ft NW swell with a period of 8 seconds and a combined energy reading of 964 – that’s strong wave energy. The wind is offshore from the ESE at just 6 mph, light breeze, and it’s clean. The forecast says “expect very good surf conditions.” That’s the one to circle on your calendar. 8ft is a solid size, though, so it’s for experienced surfers only. The short period means it’ll be a bit dumpy and fat at the beach, but the offshore wind will hold it up. A wave like that, with clean conditions, is rare in this outlook. That Monday afternoon still has a 8ft swell with offshore wind, but it’s described as marginal, so stick to the morning session.
So, for the best of the 16 days, I’d say the 7th of September morning is the clear winner. The 4th of September morning is a good warm-up, but that 7th is the bigger, more powerful swell. Don’t expect much else. The rest is a write-off.
Rusty, signing off.
