The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what the North Sea is cooking up for us over the next couple of weeks.

It’s a pretty grim outlook for Oase zur Sonne Westerland (Sylt) to be honest. The whole 16-day window is a real struggle. There’s no proper surf on the cards at all, and the conditions are just a mess for most of it. The first real chance to even paddle out doesn't come until Friday the 20th of August, and even then, it’s not great.

The pattern is a lot of wind, mostly onshore or cross-onshore, keeping the surface chopped up and lumpy. The water temperature is sitting at 66°F and is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, which is about the only nice thing going for it.

Let’s break it down. Friday the 7th through to the 11th is a write-off. We’ve got swell from the WNW hitting 5 ft on Friday morning, but with a 19 mph onshore wind, it’s just a messy, blown-out wall of white water. The combined energy tops out at 232 (moderate) but it’s completely unsurfable. That theme continues through the weekend and into early next week.

Things get a little interesting on Wednesday the 12th, but not in a good way for surfing. The swell drops right off to a tiny 2 ft, and while the wind goes glassy in the morning, there's just no energy to work with. The same goes for Thursday the 13th – clean conditions but with a combined energy of just 1 (weak), it’s a flat day.

The next real pulse of size comes on Tuesday the 19th of August, with swell from the SW pushing 5 ft and combined energy hitting 184 (moderate). But the wind is onshore again at 12-19 mph, so it’s just another day of poor surf conditions.

Your best bet, and I mean the *only* bet in this whole outlook, is the morning of Thursday the 20th of August. The swell is solid at 5 ft from the W, with a period of 6 seconds, and combined energy of 176 (moderate). More importantly, the wind swings to a light offshore from the NE, coming in at 9 mph. It’s forecast to be clean. That’s your window. The waves will be a bit gutless with that short period, but it’s the only time the wind is cooperating with some size. The crowd factor is "sometimes" at this spot, so you might have some company.

For the rest of the period, it’s a mix of cross-shore winds and onshore winds with a few pulses of energy that just get trashed. The morning of Saturday the 22nd has a fresh 19 mph cross-offshore wind, but the swell is down to 3 ft. It’s clean, but too small to get excited about.

Given the constant onshore wind and the size of the swell on the 11th and 19th, this setup honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. For us wave riders, it’s a long wait for a very average, short-period wave on the 20th. That’s the only stand-out option, and it’s a weak one.

Rusty.
