The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for this stretch. The outlook is a tough one, plain and simple. We’ve got a 16-day window on the cards, but honest to god, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The whole period is a flat, windy mess with no real swell to speak of and crappy conditions on top. From the start, Friday the 7th of August, we see a 5ft swell from the WNW, but with a short 8-second period and a fresh 19 mph onshore wind, it’s a total write-off. The energy is weak at 232 (combined energy), and it only gets worse from there.
The whole first week is a bust. Swell heights drop below 3ft, periods get shorter, and the wind is either strong onshore or cross-onshore, keeping the surface lumpy and choppy. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing special. There’s a little window of glassy conditions on Wednesday the 12th of August, but with only 1ft of swell and a 6-second period, you’re looking at flat, not surfable. The energy is barely a whisper—12 (combined energy) in the morning and 9 in the afternoon. Not worth wetting a wetsuit for.
The second week tries to kick up a little on Saturday the 15th of August, with a 4ft, 5-second swell from the NNW, but it’s cross-shore and messy, with only 54 (combined energy). The wind is a moderate 16 mph, so it’s just a choppy, crumbly mess. After that, it’s back to tiny waves and more onshore or cross-onshore wind. The whole 16 days are a dud. There’s no standout, no decent option, not even for beginners. The only break in the file is Oase zur Sonne Westerland (Sylt), and it’s a beach setup exposed to the NW, but every single record says “poor surf conditions.” When the combined energy never even hits 100 after the first day, you know it’s a flat spell.
It’s a blank run for this area, and honestly, it’s not unusual. The North Sea can be like this—long gaps with nothing. Keep your hopes up though; forecasts change, and it tends not to stay this poor for long. For now, leave the boards in the van.
Rusty.
