Alright folks, Rusty here, and I’m looking straight at the Bolsa Chica forecast. Let’s be honest right off the bat – this is a tough stretch for paddle surfing. We’ve got a long run of small swell and onshore wind that’s going to leave the waves pretty junky for most of the next two weeks. The water is sitting at 67°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Right now, we’re into Friday the 10th and the surf is just not cooperating. Small 3ft swell from the SSW with a 15-second period sounds promising for shape, but the cross-onshore wind is just chopping it all up. That pattern – small swell, cross-onshore wind from the S or SW – pretty much locks in Saturday and Sunday as more of the same. It’s a real bummer of a start.
Moving into the new week, Monday the 13th is still grim. The swell drops a little, the wind stays on it, and we’re looking at poor conditions. Tuesday and Wednesday the swell fades even more, dropping to 2ft and then 1ft. Not much to get excited about. We’ve got a 10-day gap here where there’s nothing really rideable.
Now, there is a little flicker of hope if you’re patient. On Thursday the 23rd of July, the morning shows something different: glassy conditions and a 2ft swell from the SSW. That’s a whole 13 days out, so lock it in with a grain of salt, but a clean, glassy morning with a 14-second period at a fairly exposed spot like Bolsa Chica could actually offer up some fun little lines. The combined swell energy is weak at 186, so don’t expect bombs, but for a beginner-friendly break, that’s a rare window of clean surf.
Further out still, Saturday the 25th sees a bigger pulse of 5ft swell from the SSE with strong energy (1015), but it comes with onshore wind and choppy conditions. That’s more of a wind-swell mess than a surfer’s dream.
If you’re kiting, that whole second week with the cross-onshore wind and small swell might actually be more your alley. For us paddle surfers, the standout moment is hands-down that Thursday the 23rd morning at Bolsa Chica – clean, glassy, and small but surfable. It’s not a classic, but it’s the best on offer by a long shot.
