The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Right off the bat, I’ll be straight with you: the next 16 days are looking pretty grim for Bolsa Chica. There’s no real standout surf to get excited about. The whole window is filled with poor surf conditions, and only a couple of days even get a marginal nod. The first few days are a write-off, with weak swell and messy winds. We’ve got a gap of about a week and a half of nothing really worth paddling out for, so don’t rush.
The first half of the period is dominated by small, weak swell. Monday, July 13th, kicks off with cloudy skies and a light breeze, but the swell is a tiny 3 ft from the SSW, with a combined energy of just 276 – that’s weak. The water temperature is 68°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing, but the waves are poor. The wind is onshore and stays cross-onshore for most of the next week, chopping up whatever small swell tries to show. Tuesday and Wednesday are even smaller, with swell dropping to 2 ft to 2 ft. The wind shifts around but never really cleans it up.
We’re looking at a long stretch of nothing. Thursday through the following weekend is all tiny, weak, and onshore. The swell direction is mostly out of the SW or SSW, which isn’t the optimum for this spot – it wants a clean SW groundswell, but the period is all over the place, from short 7-second junk up to a longer 18-second pulse, but that longer period stuff is too straight for a beach break like this, and the wind just ruins it.
The only time things even get a marginal look is around Wednesday, July 22nd and Thursday, July 23rd. On the 22nd, we see a bump in swell to 4 ft from the S, with a period of 15 seconds and combined energy climbing to 728 – that’s moderate energy. The wind is light and onshore in the morning, which is okay, but it’s still only a marginal forecast. The next day, July 23rd, morning sees a bigger 5 ft swell from the S, with a 14-second period and energy hitting 980 – that’s getting close to strong. But here’s the catch: that’s a bit too big for a beginner spot like this, and the wind is cross-onshore, making it choppy. It’s really only for the experienced crew, and even then, the quality is poor. The afternoon dies off again.
Honestly, after that, it fades back into the same small, weak, and messy pattern right through to the end of the 16 days. There’s just nothing to get stoked about. The swell never really lines up with good wind, and the energy is mostly weak to moderate. For a spot that’s fairly consistent, this is a rare blank run. Forecasts can change, but looking at this, I’d say save your energy for another week.
Stay tuned, and hopefully the charts start looking better.
Rusty.
