The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down. The spot is Bolsa Chica. It’s a beginner-friendly beach break, fairly exposed to the swell, and it’s been a bit of a slow start here. Honestly, the next few days are looking pretty marginal—nothing to get too excited about just yet. The water is sitting at 70°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice bonus if you’re just getting in the water.
Looking at the first proper surf window, the morning of Thursday, 30th July, there’s a bit of a pulse coming through. Swell from the south at 4ft, period around 15 seconds—that’s a long period groundswell, which means it’ll have some push and shape, but at a beach break it can sometimes straighten out a bit. Still, the combined energy is moderate to strong (1069), and with light cross-onshore winds from the SSW at 6 mph, it’s not totally clean but it’s rideable. The morning on Friday, 31st July, looks like the best of the bunch—swell holds at 6ft from the south, period dropping a touch to 14 seconds, but the energy is strong (1349). Wind is light and onshore from the SW at 6 mph, which is a bit of a bummer, but for a beginner spot, that’s still manageable. This is the standout window: Friday morning. It’s the biggest swell of the period, but at 6ft, it’s getting a bit too much for total beginners—better for those who’ve got a few sessions under their belt.
After that, things drop off quickly. The weekend of 1st and 2nd August sees smaller swell and more onshore wind, and by Monday, 3rd August, it’s basically flat with tiny 1ft swell and weak energy. There’s a long stretch of nothing from the 3rd all the way through to the 9th of August—just tiny, weak waves and poor conditions. The energy drops below 100 at times, which is barely a ripple. The swell direction stays mostly SW or SSW, and the wind is often onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s not looking good for paddle surfing. Honestly, if you’re into kiting, that stretch might be more interesting, but for a surfer, it’s a dead run.
So, bottom line: the best bet is Friday morning, 31st July. It’s the biggest swell, decent energy, but wind is cross-on. If you’re a beginner, Thursday morning is a bit smaller and safer. After that, the forecast goes quiet for over a week, and that’s pretty normal for this area in summer. Keep an eye on it, but don’t hold your breath.
