The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty, and let's have a proper look at what's on the cards for Big Rock over the next couple of weeks.
We've got a slow start here, folks. The first few days are a bit of a write-off. Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd have tiny little waves, with the swell struggling to push past 2ft, and the forecast is really only calling it marginal at best. The combined energy is weak, sitting around 209 to 281, so there's just not enough grunt in the water. You'd be wasting your time paddling out.
The first proper chance to wet a line comes on Tuesday the 25th. The morning kicks off with a slight bump, but it's the afternoon where we see a bit of life – swell ticks up to 4ft from the SSW with a solid 13-second period. The winds are offshore from the West, which will keep the surface clean. The combined energy climbs to a moderate 731, and it's looking like the best of the early window. It's still described as marginal, but it's the closest thing we've got to a surf to start the week.
Now, the standout of the whole outlook shapes up for Wednesday the 26th. The morning brings a clean 5ft swell from the SSW, again with that 13-second period giving it some punch. The combined energy jumps to 1045, which is moderate but the strongest we'll see. The winds are cross-shore, so it won't be glassy, but there's just a slight cross-chop, not a messy onshore. This is the biggest, most powerful swell of the window, and for advanced surfers at this exposed reef break, it's the one to circle. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you can leave the thick wetsuit at home.
After that, it trails off. Thursday the 27th holds at 4ft, but the period drops and the winds turn a bit cross-onshore, making it less appealing. Friday the 28th to Sunday the 30th have waist-to-chest high waves, around 3ft to 4ft, with offshore or light cross-onshore breezes keeping things tidy, but the energy is moderate and the scores are low. It's rideable, but nothing to get excited about.
Then we hit a long, flat spell. From the 31st of August right through to the 3rd of September, it's pretty much a bust. Swells drop to 2ft to 3ft, conditions are poor, and the combined energy fades. There's a flicker of life on the 4th of September, with the afternoon seeing a 3ft SSW swell and near-glass conditions with a 3 mph wind, but it's a week and a half away and the energy is still moderate. The 5th brings a bit more size at 4ft, but it's blown out by a moderate breeze, so it's one to keep an eye on but don't bank on it.
All in all, Wednesday the 26th is your best bet – it's the biggest, cleanest, and most powerful day of the pack. Get out there while it's good, because the second week looks like a lot of waiting.
Rusty.
