Table - best surf conditions forecast for Big Rock over the next 16 days.
The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a pretty quiet stretch ahead, to be honest. The first few days are looking flat and uninspiring, with a real lack of energy. The swell that does show up is small and weak, and the wind is mostly onshore, which is a real shame. The water is sitting at a warm 73°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick wetsuit, but you will need patience.
The best bet on offer, and it’s a bit of a stretch, is Big Rock (reef). It’s an advanced spot and fairly consistent, but don’t expect perfection. The standout moment is likely to be Thursday, 24 July afternoon. The swell bumps up to 4ft out of the SSW, with a period of 13 seconds, and the wind is a gentle cross-shore. That’s about as clean as it’s going to get in this window. The combined swell energy is moderate (742). It’s not a world-beater, but it’s the best of a quiet bunch. For the advanced crew, there’s a pulse on Friday, 31 July with a 6ft SSW swell, but the wind is cross-on, so it’ll be a bit lumpy. The energy is stronger there (1106), so it’s one for the more experienced surfers only.
Honestly, for the first week, it’s mostly marginal. The groundswell that shows up from the 24th has a long period (21-24 seconds) which is great for the reef setup here, but the size is small. The long period means the sets will be well-spaced, making the paddle out easier, but you’ll be hunting for waves. The crowds are "often" here, so expect company.
The second week (from 28 July onward) doesn’t offer much to get excited about. The swell stays around 3ft to 4ft, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore. Nothing really stands out as a must-surf session. The energy dips and the quality just isn’t there.
So, to wrap it up: if you’re an advanced surfer and you’re desperate, aim for 24 July afternoon at Big Rock. Otherwise, it’s a good time to clean your gear and wait for the next forecast.
Rusty.
