The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Bakio.
Honestly, the next week and a half is a bit of a write-off. We’re looking at small, weak, and messy conditions for the most part, with a few short windows of cleaner surf but nothing to write home about.
First up, Thursday the 20th is the first real glimmer of hope. The morning session is the pick with a 4ft NW swell pushing in with a decent 11-second period and moderate wave energy (303). The wind is light and cross-off from the WSW, so it should be clean. It’s nothing huge, but it’s the best we’ve seen so far.
We then hit a rough patch with a few days of light rain and cross-onshore winds, with a spike on Tuesday the 25th afternoon that sees a 7ft NW swell, but it’s blown out by a moderate cross-onshore and choppy. That one’s a pass.
Now, the real standout is a long way off. Friday the 28th morning is looking special. We’ve got a 6ft NW groundswell with a 12-second period, and the wind is absolutely glassy from the SSE. That’s a recipe for clean, lined-up waves. The energy is strong (869), and it’s a classic NW direction for Bakio. This is the one to mark on the calendar, but it’s over a week away, so keep an eye on the forecast.
The other one to watch is Monday the 31st morning. The swell jumps to 7ft from the NW, and it’s glassy again with a light ENE breeze. The energy is very strong (694). That’s prime for experienced surfers, but it might be pushing the limits for beginners.
Looking further ahead, Tuesday the 1st of September morning is a big one. A 8ft NW swell with a 14-second period and massive energy (2323). The wind is light and cross-off, so it’ll be clean. This is a serious swell for experts only, but it’s also a long way out.
The water here is running much warmer than usual for this time of year, sitting at 76°, which is a nice bonus.
So, to sum it up: the first two weeks are mostly a bust. The absolute best bets are the morning of Friday the 28th of August and the morning of Monday the 31st of August. The 1st of September is a wildcard for the brave.
Rusty.
