The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Bakio.
Looking at the next couple of weeks, it’s a pretty quiet stretch. The water is sitting at 75°F right now, which is 6°F warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s real warm, like bathwater. The bad news is, for the first week and a half, the swell is tiny and the wind is mostly messy. But there’s a little light at the end of the tunnel.
Right, from Wednesday the 15th all the way through to Monday the 27th of July, it’s a long, flat spell. Swell heights are mostly under 3 feet, with periods barely hitting 5-6 seconds – that’s weak, windswell that won’t do anything. The combined wave energy is low, usually under 100. The wind is mostly cross or cross-on, chopping up whatever tiny bump there is. There are a couple of glassy mornings, like Thursday the 16th and Saturday the 19th, but the swell is only around 1 feet, so it’s just a ripple. We’re talking a solid 13-day stretch of “don’t even bother.”
Things perk up a bit on Tuesday the 28th. The swell comes up to 4 feet from the NW with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy hits a moderate 201. The morning cross-shore wind from the E is light, so it’s rideable but still only marginal.
The best shot you’ll get is on Thursday, the 30th of July. The swell is 4 feet from the NNW, but the period jumps to 11 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The combined energy is a solid 411, which is strong. The morning has a light cross-shore breeze from the E, keeping it reasonably clean. That longer period will give you better shaped waves and longer lulls between sets, which makes paddling out easier. It’s still a marginal forecast, so don’t expect perfection, but if you’re looking for a window, this is it.
The rest of the days are a washout. Too small, wrong wind, or just poor quality. The 30th is your only real chance, but it’s a long way off, so keep checking back.
Rusty, out.
