The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Bakio’s got cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the first few days are a real bust. Sunday through to Wednesday next week is just flat or junk. We’re talkin’ tiny dribble, onshore winds, and a whole lot of nothin’. You’re better off stayin’ home and waxin’ your boards for a week. There’s a gap of about 4 days with no worthwhile surf.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Thursday, 27th August. The morning shows a clean 4ft swell from the WNW with a 8-second period, and the combined energy is moderate (193). The wind is cross-offshore from the SW, so it’ll be clean. But the waves are still a bit junky and it’s a “poor” call overall, so manage expectations.
Now, the standout – and I mean the *real* standout – is Friday morning, 28th August. This is the one. Bakio is gonna wake up to a solid 7ft groundswell from the NW, with a period of 11 seconds. The combined energy is strong (1009). That’s a lot of power. The wind is light and offshore from the SW, so it’ll be clean and lined up. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers; the swell is over 8ft for the afternoon, but that morning window is the money time. For the beginners, this is too big.
Saturday, 29th August, the swell drops to 6ft from the NW, but the wind goes cross-shore in the morning, making it a bit bumpy. The afternoon gets more cross-onshore. It’s a marginal call at best.
After that, it’s a real mixed bag of smaller, weaker swells and onshore slop. The second week of the forecast has a few mornings with glassy conditions and tiny 2-3ft waves, like on Wednesday, 2nd September, and Friday, 4th September. The water temp is a warm 75°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick suit.
To be honest, if you’re not charging that Friday morning, you’re gonna be waiting a long time for the next decent wave. The other days are mostly small, weak, and choppy. It’s a one-hit wonder this fortnight.
Rusty.
