The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here.

Alright mate, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Bakio. It’s looking like a slow start, with a real mixed bag of conditions to get through before we see some proper windows. The water is sitting at a very warm 75°F, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a standout in itself.

We kick off Wednesday, the 19th. Tiny little 1ft waves with a short 6-second period and a light cross breeze. Honestly, it’s a write-off. The energy in the water is weak (12), and the conditions are poor. Not worth a paddle.

Thursday the 20th sees the swell pick up a bit to 4ft, with a longer 11-second period giving it some proper shape. The energy is moderate (382). But the wind is a messy cross-onshore, keeping the surface choppy. It’s not cleaned up enough to get excited about.

Friday the 21st, the swell pushes to 6ft, with moderate energy (565) and a 10-second period. But again, we’ve got moderate cross-onshore winds making things ugly. Kite surfers might be having a look, but for a paddle surfer, it’s not on.

Alright, here comes the first real glimmer. Saturday morning the 22nd. The swell drops a little to 4ft from the NW with a clean 9-second period, but the magic is in the wind – it’s glassy, with a slight breeze from the NNE. That means dead-clean, smooth conditions. The energy is moderate (230). This is your window for a fun, easy session. It’s a beginner-friendly break with consistent waves, but expect it to be often crowded here as it’s an exposed spot and this is the best it’s looked so far.

Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th fade back into small, weak swell (2ft to 4ft) with short periods and messy winds. Not much to chase.

Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th are similar – small and unappealing, with moderate cross-shore winds. Not worth getting wet for.

Now, Thursday the 27th of August. This is a beast of a day, but not for everyone. The swell pumps to 10ft from the WNW with a 10-second period, and the energy is very strong (1840). The morning is looking clean with a light cross-offshore breeze. But fair warning – this is too big for beginners and is really only for experts. The wind and tide are right, but it’s going to be a handful.

Friday the 28th of August is a standout for the more experienced. The swell is still a solid 6ft from the NW with a 10-second period and very strong energy (650). And the wind? Glassy. Dead flat, clean surf. This is going to be a proper session for those who know what they’re doing. Expect crowds.

After that, Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th see the swell back to 5-6ft but with fresh cross-shore winds, chopping things up. Not ideal.

We get another huge spike on Monday the 31st of August, with 8ft to 12ft NW swell, very long 13-second periods, and extreme energy (2154 to 3506). This is monstrous, and only for the bravest. The wind is cross or cross-onshore, so conditions are lumpy and challenging.

Tuesday the 1st of September is similar – 10ft swell with a long 12-second period, very strong energy (2878). The morning looks like the wind and tide align, but again, this is way too big for anyone but experts. The afternoon remains big and marginal.

Finally, Wednesday the 2nd of September and Thursday the 3rd of September offer a nice drop back. On Wednesday morning we’ve got 5ft swell from the NW, 10-second period, moderate energy (560), and a light cross-offshore wind from the SSE. Clean conditions for a fun session. Thursday morning drops to 4ft from the NW with a 9-second period, light energy (241), but glassy conditions with a cross-offshore breeze from the WSW. A nice, clean, easy finisher.

The real standouts in this outlook? Saturday the 22nd for a clean, small beginner-friendly wave and Friday the 28th of August for a bigger, cleaner, more powerful session for the experienced crew. The big days on the 31st and 1st are for experts only.

Rusty.
