The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next two weeks. Honestly, it starts real slow, so don’t be in a hurry to wax up. The water’s at 75°, which is way warmer than usual for this time of year – at least it’ll be nice to sit out there.
There’s nothing worth paddling out for until Saturday the 27th of August. The surf is tiny, the wind is wrong, it’s all junk. From the 27th, the swell picks up, but the wind messes it up for a while.
Thursday the 25th of August morning is clean with a light offshore breeze, but the swell is basically flat at 0.3ft from the NW with a 13-second period. That’s a groundswell, but there’s no energy behind it (combined energy 13). Don’t bother.
Thursday the 27th of August morning brings a punchier 7ft swell from the WNW, 8-second period. The combined energy hits 538 (moderate), so there’s some grunt, but the cross-shore wind is blowing 30 km/h and it’s lumpy. That’s kite-surfing weather, not clean paddle surfing. Not our day.
The real standout is Saturday the 29th of August morning at Bakio. We’re looking at 7ft from the NW, 10-second period, and glassy conditions with a light easterly breeze at just 5 km/h. That’s as clean as it gets. Combined energy is 962 (moderate to strong). The swell is a bit big for beginners, but for anyone with some experience, this is the session. The direction (NW) is exactly what this break likes. It’s consistent here, so waves will come steady, but crowds are often a thing, so beat the rush.
Sunday the 30th of August morning is also solid: 5ft from the NW, 9-second period, glassy again with light east wind. Combined energy is 332 (moderate). Smaller and cleaner, better for intermediate surfers, but not as powerful.
And then there’s a later highlight on Thursday the 3rd of September morning. We’re two weeks out on this, so don’t lock it in yet, but the data shows 7ft from the NW with a long 13-second period, glassy conditions, and combined energy of 1395 (strong). That’s a proper groundswell. For Bakio, that long period will wrap in nicely and give you long, clean lines. Definitely for the experts, as 7ft with that energy will have some real power. Put it on your radar and check back closer to the date.
So, the first week is a bust. Don’t bother. Saturday the 29th of August morning is your best bet for a clean, fun session, and keep an eye on Thursday the 3rd of September morning for something bigger.
Rusty.
