The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer.
Honestly, it’s a pretty bleak stretch ahead for Bakio. The immediate days are all flat and messy, with nothing worth paddling out for. The water is sitting at 75°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s a real anomaly of 6°F above average, so it’s like bathwater.
We’ve got a long, quiet gap from the start of the forecast right through to the morning of the 27th of July. The first real glimmer of something rideable shows up on that Monday morning. It’s still not firing – the swell is a weak 4ft from the NNW, with only 247 units of combined energy (moderate at best), and the period is a short 9 seconds. The wind is a light cross-onshore, so it’ll be a little bumpy. The afternoon of the 27th stays similar, but with straight onshore wind from the N, making it even less inviting. This is really only for the diehards who just want to get wet; beginners might find the 4ft swell a bit challenging, but it’s not huge.
The standout in this whole 16-day window, if you can call it that, is the morning of the 31st of July. Friday morning brings a 4ft groundswell from the NW with a period of 11 seconds, which is enough to put some shape in the waves. The combined energy is 284 (moderate), and the wind is a light onshore from the NNE, practically glassy. That’s the cleanest it’ll get. The crowd situation at Bakio can be “often” busy, so expect company. The swell is small enough for beginners, but the better-shaped waves from the longer period will be more fun for intermediates. The afternoon is a bit more onshore, so the morning is the pick.
The week after that, on the 1st of August, the morning has a cross-shore wind and a similar 4ft NW swell, but it’s only marginal – the tide might mess with it. After that, the forecast just fades back into poor conditions.
So, to wrap it up: if you’re desperate, the 31st of July (Friday) morning is your best bet. Otherwise, it’s a long wait for not much. Don’t hold your breath.
