The Lowdown
Alright, I’m gonna level with you. It’s been a pretty grim stretch out here at Bakio (Spain). For the first week or so, there’s really nothing to get excited about. We’re looking at a whole lot of tiny, weak swell with poor conditions. The wind has been a problem, mostly cross-shore or onshore, and the wave heights are barely worth a mention. You’ll see a few days, like Monday the 20th into Tuesday the 21st, where the swell bumps up to around 4ft, but the period is short, around 6 to 7 seconds, and the wind just messes it up. The combined energy is moderate at best, but it’s not clean. It’s a bit of a write-off for paddle surfing.
Then we hit a barren patch. From about Wednesday the 22nd right through to Sunday the 26th, it’s small, weak, and choppy. The swell barely reaches 3ft, the periods are short, and the wind keeps swinging onshore. The combined energy drops into the weak range. Honestly, it’s looking more like a kite-surfing setup than a surf session, especially with those moderate breezes on Saturday the 25th.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Hold on for Monday the 27th of July. That morning, we finally get a bit of magic. The swell comes in at 4ft from the NNW, with a nice long period of 10 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 340 (moderate), and best of all, the wind goes glassy. That’s the standout moment in this whole forecast. Clean, glassy conditions with a solid little groundswell. It’s going to be a good session, but it’s still a week away so keep an eye on it.
The real prize, though, is waiting for the end of the month. Friday the 31st of July in the afternoon is looking like the best on offer. We’ve got a 6ft swell from the NNW, with a period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy is a solid 567 (strong). The wind is glassy. That’s a proper wave. It’s a bit on the bigger side, so it might be better for more experienced surfers. Saturday the 1st of August morning keeps the good vibes going with a 5ft swell, glassy conditions, and a combined energy of 490 (strong). Then Sunday the 2nd of August morning follows with another glassy dawn, 4ft, and a combined energy of 325 (moderate). That’s a solid run of quality surf coming into the second week.
Just remember, the water temperature is sitting at 75°F, which is about 6°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual, so you are going to want a light spring suit or just boardies.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a total washout. Don’t bother. The standout is the afternoon of Friday the 31st of July, with glassy 6ft waves. The mornings of the 1st and 2nd of August are also strong, clean options. Be patient, and it’ll be worth the wait.
