The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for our local stretch here. I’m looking at Playa Varesse and, to be honest, the start of this run is a bit of a slow burner. We’ve got small waves and ordinary conditions to kick things off. The water temp’s about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Tuesday the 18th has a tiny bit of swell, around 2ft from the E with a period of 10 seconds. The morning’s a bit average with a cross-off wind, but the afternoon cleans right up with glassy conditions and a 2ft S swell. It’s not going to set the world on fire, but that afternoon glass-off might give you a few little fun ones if you’re desperate for a paddle. The combined wave energy is weak (117) so don’t expect much push.
Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th are pretty much a write-off. Swell drops right off to 1ft with barely any energy – we’re talking 15 to 33 on the energy scale. Forget it, not worth getting wet.
Friday the 21st sees a jump in size, but it’s junk. 5ft in the morning and 6ft in the afternoon from the S and SSE, but the period is short at 7 to 9 seconds, and we’ve got a strong cross-off wind. The energy picks up to 239 and then 513, but the conditions are poor. This is one of those days where the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, honestly.
Now, Saturday the 22nd is your standout. After a tiny 0.3ft morning, the afternoon brings a solid 7ft S swell with a 10-second period and offshore wind from the SW. The combined energy jumps to a strong 848, and the forecast is for very good surf conditions. That’s the one to circle. It’s a bit punchy for beginners at that size (over 5ft), but for anyone with a bit of experience, this is clean, offshore, and has some proper power.
Sunday the 23rd keeps the size up – 7ft in the morning and 8ft in the afternoon from the SSE with a very long period of 13 seconds by the afternoon. That long-period groundswell will wrap in nicely here. The energy is a hefty 818 and then 1844, so there’s serious juice. The wind is cross-off, but the forecast mentions marginal conditions or questionable tides. Still, for experienced surfers, the Sunday afternoon session has real potential if you can work around the tide.
Monday the 24th sees the swell drop a bit to 6ft, but the wind swings cross-shore and then cross-onshore, so it gets choppy. The rest of the week into the end of August is a write-off. The swell gets smaller, and the winds are messy – cross-onshore or just too strong. From the 25th to the 31st, there’s a big dry spell with hardly any worthwhile surf.
Into the first week of September, Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd bring a bit more size (4ft to 5ft from the SSE) with a long period of 12 seconds, but the wind howls from the NE at 22 to 25 mph with a nasty cross-onshore component. The energy is strong (515 to 648), but the conditions are lumpy and messy. That’s one for the windsurfers, not for a clean paddle session.
So, to sum it up: the Saturday 22nd afternoon is your best bet – clean, offshore, 7ft from the S.
Sunday 23rd afternoon could also be a cracker if the tide plays ball – strong, long-period S swell. After that, it’s a long wait.
Stay tuned, forecasts can change, but right now, make the most of that weekend.
Rusty.
