The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about the local surf scene here, starting with the first solid option that comes through.
It’s not looking like a classic, but we’ve got a few windows that could be worth a look. The best bet in the whole 16-day stretch is shaping up to be Saturday afternoon, 25th July at Playa Varesse. The swell is coming in from the SSE with a head-high plus 4ft, and the combined energy reading comes in at 289 (moderate wave energy). What really makes this one pop is the moderate offshore wind from the WSW, which is going to keep the surface clean. The wind state is described as moderate offshore and clean – that’s the kind of setup you don’t want to miss. The swell period is 10 seconds, so it’s got some decent shape, and it’s a consistent break, so you won’t be waiting around forever. Keep in mind it can get crowded sometimes, but with conditions like that, it’s worth sharing the water.
Leading up to that, we’ve got a long stretch of pretty ordinary stuff. Friday afternoon, 17th July, has a small 3ft easterly swell with a light cross-off breeze, but the energy is only 144 (moderate), and the conditions are only rated as “surfable but very ordinary.” The water temperature is sitting at 50°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won’t freeze your toes off. The period is short at 8 seconds, so it’s a bit of a weak, choppy windswell.
From Saturday morning, 18th July, through to Friday morning, 24th July, it’s a real dry spell. Waves are tiny, winds are messy, and the scores are all zero. You’re looking at a full week of nearly nothing worthwhile. Monday morning, 21st July, has a tiny 1ft wave with glassy conditions, but it’s just too small to get excited about.
After that Saturday highlight, things drop off again. Sunday morning, 26th July, has a clean 3ft wave with light offshore wind, but the energy is only 135 (moderate) and the period is short. It’s surfable, but nothing special. The rest of the second week is very quiet – small surf, cross-shore winds, and low energy. The only other flicker is Tuesday morning, 28th July, which has a very long period 15-second swell, but it’s only 1ft – that’s a groundswell, but it’s too small to do anything with. The break is a consistent spot, so it can handle a bit of swell, but 1ft is just a lake.
Honestly, if you’ve got a kite, the setup on some of those windier days might be more interesting than a paddle. For the surfers, that Saturday afternoon is the one to circle.
Rusty.
