The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about it. Rusty here, and looking at the Varese region, it’s a slow start for a while. The water’s at 50°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
We’re looking at Playa Varesse first. It’s a beginner-friendly spot that’s fairly consistent, but the first week is a tough slog. Wednesday the 15th has tiny, weak 2ft easterly swell with a short period, and the wind is messy cross-shore. The energy is weak (42), and it’s just poor. That sets the tone.
From Thursday the 16th to about Wednesday the 22nd, it’s a stretch of small, weak surf. Swell heights bounce between 2ft and 4ft, mostly from the east or southeast, but the periods are short, under 10 seconds. A lot of cross-onshore wind keeps things choppy. The combined energy is moderate but low end, bouncing around 100-228. There are a couple of cleaner moments—like Friday afternoon the 17th with a light offshore breeze, or Saturday the 18th with a 10-second period swell—but the waves are still just ordinary. Crowds are possible sometimes, but it’s quiet.
The real standout doesn’t show up until Sunday the 26th of July. This is the one. We’ve got a solid 7ft swell from the SSE with a very long period of 14 seconds—proper groundswell. The energy is strong (1461). With that long period and a beach break setup, it might break a bit straight, but the wind is a moderate cross-shore, keeping it rideable. This is a big swell, so it’s for experienced surfers only. The next day, Monday the 27th, is actually the best. The swell drops slightly to 6ft, but the period stays at 14 seconds, and the wind swings offshore from the west in the afternoon. That’s clean, lined-up surf. The combined energy is still very strong (1286 in the morning, 970 in the afternoon). This is a true highlight, but it’s over a week away, so keep an eye on it.
After that, the swell fades quickly. Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th have smaller 3ft and 2ft swell with longer periods, but the wind is cross-off and clean, so it’s okay for a cruise. Then Thursday the 30th looks messy again with strong onshore wind.
So, the best call? Monday the 27th of July at Playa Varesse. That offshore wind, 5ft to 6ft swell from the SE with a 14-second period, and strong energy (970) is the best we’ve got. Not for the beginners, but for the experienced crew, it’s worth the wait.
Rusty.
