The Lowdown
Alright, let's be real, the surf is gonna be a bit of a tease for a while here. The first week or so is looking pretty grim, so don't rush to wax up just yet. We've got a lot of small, weak surf with onshore or cross-shore winds messing things up. It's a waiting game.
Monday the 17th and Tuesday the 18th are just poor. We're looking at knee-high slop with moderate breezes out of the south-southwest. The swell energy is weak, barely ticking over at 109 and then dropping to 100. It's not worth your time.
Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th are even worse, with the swell dropping right off. The energy is down in the 20s and 40s. There's just nothing to work with.
Now, Friday the 21st throws a bit of a curveball. The swell jumps up to a messy 6 to 6 feet from the south, but it's short-period windswell (7-8 seconds) and the wind is cross-off from the south-southwest. The energy reads 300-446, which is moderate, but the forecast is just poor. It’ll be lumpy and unruly. This is more of a look-don't-touch kind of day.
Saturday the 22nd is a write-off. The swell just dies completely, leaving us with ankle-high dribble and strong offshore winds. Total skunk.
Then things get interesting but also dangerous. Sunday the 23rd sees a big pulse of swell fill in, reaching a solid 12 feet from the south with a longer 11-second period. The energy is huge, a strong 2699. But the wind is a strong cross-off from the south-southwest. It’s going to be a washing machine out there, easily too big for anyone but the most expert. Honestly, if it's that big and messy at the beach, it might be more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle-surfing day.
Monday the 24th is where we finally get a chance. The swell settles down to a clean 6 to 6 feet from the south-southeast, and we've got light offshore winds in the morning. The energy eases to a solid 793, and the forecast is looking very good. This is our first real window. Playa Varesse (Varese) will be the spot, with the ESE swell direction lining up with what it likes.
Tuesday the 25th is a step down with a drop to 4-4 feet and the wind goes cross-shore which will chop it up. Wednesday the 26th is back to small and messy. The rest of that week stays pretty weak, with just small waves and poor conditions. The 31st of August and the 1st of September, which are a week and a half out, do show some promise. We’re looking at a solid 5 to 6 feet from the ESE with longer periods of 11-12 seconds and clean offshore winds. The energy is strong, up in the 550-700 range. These are long-range calls, so they’re not set in stone, but they're definitely the ones to watch.
So, if you’re keen, the standout windows are the morning of Monday the 24th, and then the morning of Monday the 31st into the 1st of September. The rest is a lot of waiting.
