The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer.
The next 16 days are looking pretty quiet for the most part. We’ve got a big gap of nothing special at the start, then a glimmer of something much bigger right at the end of the run. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual there.
For the first solid week, from Friday 17 July right through to Tuesday 28 July, it’s a pretty grim stretch. The swell is small, mostly around 1 ft to 3 ft, with short periods around 8 seconds or less, and the combined wave energy is weak, sitting mostly between 43 and 171. The wind is often cross-on or cross-off, and the surf is described as “poor.” There’s a few moments on the 23rd and 24th where the wind goes offshore or gentle, and the waves are “surfable but very ordinary,” but honestly, nothing here is worth getting excited about. You’d be better off waiting.
Now, the standout window arrives on Wednesday 29 July. The swell jumps to 8 ft from the SE, with a long period of 13 seconds. The combined energy hits a massive 2063, which is very strong. The catch is the wind is moderate cross-shore with cross-chop, and the conditions are “marginal.” This is a powerful, long-period groundswell, which will be tricky at a beach setup. It’s big enough for experts only – 8 ft is serious. The crowd profile says “sometimes,” so you might have some company.
Thursday 30 July keeps the energy going with 7 ft to 8 ft swell from the SE, periods of 12 to 14 seconds, and combined energy between 1303 and 1968. The wind is cross-on and choppy, so it’s going to be a bit messy. Still, the power is there.
Friday 31 July sees 7 ft to 6 ft from the SE with a 14-second period, but the wind is a fresh cross-on, 30 km/h, making it lumpy. The energy is still strong at 1622 and 1210.
Finally, Saturday 1 August the swell drops to 5 ft from the SE, period still 14 seconds, energy down to 848 (moderate), and the wind goes cross-off and gentle. This is the cleanest day of the whole late push, but the swell is smaller.
The best bet on offer? Wednesday 29 July at Playa Varesse. It’s the biggest swell of the run at 8 ft from the SE, with a very long 13-second period. That’s proper groundswell energy (2063). Only for the experienced crew. The wind is cross-shore, so not perfect, but the power is undeniable. If you’re a beginner, stay well clear.
Rusty.
