The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up at Tippers.
Honestly, the next few days are a bit of a struggle. We’ve got waves, but they’re small and messy, and the conditions are just not lining up. The first real chance for a surf is this Saturday morning, the 22nd of August, but it’s a marginal one. You’re looking at a tiny 2ft swell from the SSW with a solid 13-second period, so there’s some groundswell energy in the water (combined energy around 200), but the wind is light and onshore, so it’ll be a bit bumpy. It’s not really worth paddling out for unless you’re desperate. The afternoon picks up a touch to 3ft but stays cross-onshore.
Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are pretty poor – the swell stays around 2ft with cross-onshore winds and the wave quality is just not there. Tuesday the 25th is a little better with 2ft and onshore wind, but still marginal. Nothing to get excited about.
The first real standout in this outlook is Wednesday the 26th of August. The morning starts with a 4ft S swell, 14-second period, and light cross-onshore breeze – still a little rippled, but the combined energy jumps to 867, so there’s some push. By the afternoon, the swell builds to 6ft from the S, period still 14 seconds, and the energy really kicks up to 1477. That’s a solid moderate to strong energy level. The wind stays cross-onshore though, so it’ll be a bit choppy, but for the more experienced crew, there’ll be some fun ones. This is probably the best of the first week, but it’s not clean, clean.
Thursday the 27th drops back a bit – 4ft in the morning, but the period shortens to 12 seconds, and the wind stays cross-onshore. Friday the 28th is small again, 3ft with onshore wind.
Now, if you’re willing to wait, the second week has some promise. Saturday the 29th of August sees a 4ft SSW swell with a 17-second period in the morning – that’s a long-period groundswell, which means better shaped waves but longer lulls. The combined energy is 799, so moderate. Wind is light cross-onshore, so a little bumpy but workable. Sunday the 30th is similar with 4ft and 15-second period.
The real standout of the entire forecast is Saturday the 5th of September. By the afternoon, we’ve got a 5ft SSE swell with a 15-second period, and the combined energy is a solid 1984 – that’s strong wave energy. Wind is light and onshore, so it’s clean. This is a great window for experienced surfers. The swell direction (SSE) isn’t quite the optimum SW for Tippers, but with that kind of energy and long period, it’ll still wrap in nicely. Sunday the 6th of September keeps it going with 6ft from the SSE and 14-second period, energy at 1876, and light onshore wind. That’s another solid day.
So, the best bet in this whole run is Saturday the 5th of September into Sunday the 6th – that’s your window for the best swell size, clean conditions, and real power in the water. The rest of the period is small or marginal, so save your energy for that weekend.
Rusty out.
