The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get real about the next couple of weeks. To be honest, the surf is looking pretty flat and weak for a while. We’ve got a long stretch of small, gutless swells and a lot of it is lined up wrong for the Sandbox. The water is a crazy 76°F with a huge anomaly of 8°F warmer than normal – that’s a big deal, the ocean’s running really warm for this time of year.

The first few days, from Sunday the 9th through Thursday the 13th, are a total write-off. We’re looking at tiny waves, nothing over 3ft, and most of it is coming from the SSW, which is not what this spot wants. The wind is mostly light and cross-on, which isn't helping the cause. There’s some energy in the water, but it's just not translating into anything rideable. You’d be fighting for scraps.

Things start to shift a little on Friday the 14th. The swell stays small, around 2ft to 3ft, but the period stretches out to 18 seconds, and the energy starts to climb. It’s still only marginal, and the wind is light and onshore, but at least there’s some push to it. Saturday the 15th sees the energy peak with the swell bumping up to 4ft in the afternoon, but the direction is still SSW and the period drops back to 16 seconds. It's still not great, but it’s the most interesting it’s been.

The standout, if you can call it that, is Saturday the 15th. The swell is 4ft from the SSW with a 16 second period. It’s not big, but it’s the most size we see in the whole window. The wind is light cross-on, so it might have a bit of texture, but it’s the best of a pretty average bunch. The energy is strong, which is the peak for the whole period. It’s still a far cry from perfect, but it’s the only day I’d bother getting wet for.

After that, the energy backs off a bit, but the swell direction stays the same. The rest of the second week is more of the same – small SSW pulses, mostly in the 2ft to 3ft range, with some longer period stuff around the 21st and 23rd. The winds stay light, which is a plus, but the waves are just not there. There’s a little blip on the 22nd with a 21 second period, but the swell is only 1ft. It’s all promise and no payoff. The long period stuff is there, but with the beach break setup, it might just close out.

Honestly, this is a bleak outlook. The Sandbox is a consistent spot, so it’s a bit unusual to see such a long run of nothing. But the swell direction is just wrong, and the size is too small. It’s not going to be good for much besides maybe a log if you’re desperate. I wouldn't hold my breath for any proper waves.
