The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, lookin’ at the Tarcoola (Chanteez) forecast for the next couple of weeks. Strap in, ‘cause it’s a bit of a mixed bag at this advanced spot.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a flat start. The first couple of days are a write-off thanks to a fresh cross-shore wind and rain on Friday the 17th, with a gutless 5ft SW swell that’s just messy. The combined energy is a weak 810, so honestly, not even worth paddling out for.
Come Saturday the 18th, the swell kicks up but it’s a double-edged sword. We’re looking at a solid 7ft to 10ft SW groundswell with a 14-second period, so the energy is massive – we’re talking 2407 to 4277 on the combined energy scale. That’s strong, powerful stuff. Problem is, for Tarcoola, it’s too big. This is an advanced wave on a good day, but over 8ft it’s strictly for the experts only, and even then, it’s a handful. The wind is cross-on, so it’ll be a bumpy, challenging beast.
The real standout window opens up on Monday the 20th. The morning session is looking clean with a light offshore breeze from the southeast and a nicely sized 5ft SW swell. The period is a solid 13 seconds, and the combined energy is a moderate 919. This is prime Tarcoola – clean, powerful, and with a bit of a lull between sets to get back out. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so just a standard 3/2 will do.
As we head into the second week, the size drops off a bit mid-week, but the winds stay clean. Tuesday morning the 21st is another beauty – 4ft SW swell, slight offshore air, and clean conditions. The energy is lower at 671, but the quality is there. Then by Wednesday the 22nd, the swell bumps back up, and we get a 6ft to 7ft SW groundswell with a 15-second period and clean offshore winds again. That’s a solid 1936 in combined energy. It’s the kind of day where the waves have real push and shape, but you’ll want to be experienced to handle the power.
Further out, the 27th of July (Monday) afternoon is looking very promising. A 6ft SW groundswell with a 15-second period, and we get a gentle offshore breeze from the ENE. The combined energy is 1305, and the forecast is calling for excellent conditions for experienced surfers. That’s the one to circle on the calendar – clean, powerful, and long period. The 29th of July (Wednesday) afternoon also has a similar vibe with a 4ft, 18-second period groundswell and clean conditions. Then the 30th of July (Thursday) sees a massive 21-second period groundswell hitting 5ft, with a combined energy of 3036. That’s a very long period groundswell, which will be incredible at this reef/point setup, but it will be very selective and powerful.
The final call on the 1st of August (Saturday) morning is a 6ft SW groundswell, 17-second period, and a gentle cross-offshore breeze. Clean and powerful, with 1864 in combined energy. Another solid option for the experienced crew.
So, to sum it up: the first weekend is a washout or too big. The standout days are the Monday the 20th morning, and then the 27th July afternoon and the 30th July morning. That’s where the stars align for a proper session. Crowds are “sometimes” an issue at Tarcoola, so on those clean days, expect a few other keen locals. The second week looks promising but less certain this far out.
Rusty.
