Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s coming up.
First thing you gotta know, the water is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, sitting at 68°, so a good 3° cooler than usual. That’s notable, you’ll feel it.
The whole outlook is a bit of a mixed bag for Tarcoola (Chanteez). We’ve got some serious size coming through, but it’s not always going to be clean. The swell is coming from the southwest, which is the sweet spot for this spot, but the size is the main issue.
Tuesday morning, July 7th, we’ve got a solid 8ft SW groundswell with a 16-second period. That’s a lot of water moving, with a combined energy of 3090, which is strong. The wind is a light ESE cross-off, so the surface is clean. But honestly, this is an advanced-only affair. For most, 8ft is too big and will be a handful. The afternoon stays big at 8ft, but the wind swings to a cross-shore, so it’ll get a bit bumpy.
Wednesday the 8th is a smaller day. The morning drops to 6ft with a clean NNE cross-off, but it’s a bit marginal. The afternoon sees the swell picking up again to 7ft, and the wind is a light cross-onshore, so it’s not the best shape.
Now, Thursday morning, July 9th, that’s your standout. The swell is a solid 7ft from the WSW, 16-second period, but the wind is dead glassy. That’s a major positive. The combined energy is 1956, so it's got grunt. For experienced surfers, this is the best session on offer. The afternoon drops off a bit with a cross-onshore breeze.
Friday the 10th is a smaller cleaner morning, 5ft SW and a cross-off wind, but the period is shorter at 13 seconds. It’s okay, not a standout.
There’s a lull in quality through the weekend, with smaller, weaker swell and more onshore wind. Sunday the 12th has a clean morning with 4ft, 17-second groundswell, so it’s longer period and clean, but the size is down. The energy is 1462, so it’s moderate.
Monday the 13th, we’re back to big, powerful swell. 8ft SW with a 17-second period and a clean offshore wind. That’s another one for experts only. The energy is 3847, that’s very strong. The afternoon stays big but gets a cross-shore wind.
Tuesday the 14th, the afternoon is the call. 6ft, 15-second SW swell, and the wind goes glassy. That’s clean and powerful, a good one for experienced surfers. The energy is 1308, solid.
The second week gets a bit wild. From the 16th onward, we’re seeing a lot of big, powerful swells, but the wind is often against it, making it choppy and messy. The 17th of July has 10ft SW with a 16-second period, but it’s a rain shower and a cross-onshore wind, so it’s a write-off. There’s a glassy window on the morning of the 18th with 8ft, but that’s still too big for most.
Overall, the best bet is the Thursday morning, July 9th. That glassy, 7ft SW groundswell is the cleanest, most powerful option that’s not too big for a skilled surfer. The other standout is the glassy afternoon on Tuesday, July 14th, with 6ft. These are the two sessions to circle.
Rusty.
