The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Tarcoola (Chanteez) over the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a slow burn, but there’s some serious potential if you’re patient and know what you’re doing.
The water’s sitting at 68°, which is a degree or so cooler than what we’d normally expect for this time of year – you’ll feel that nip on the skin first thing, but a good 4/3 will sort you out.
The first few days are pretty average, to be honest. Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th have some waist-to-chest high swell around 5 ft to 5 ft, but the wind is a mess – cross-off and cross-shore with a fresh breeze, and the wave energy is moderate (1194-1368). It’s just not clean enough to get excited about. Friday the 17th looks even worse with rain and lumpy, choppy conditions – I’d give that one a miss.
Now, heads up. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th see a big pulse of SW groundswell, but it’s a double-edged sword. The swell jumps to 8 ft – 10 ft, with a long period of 14-17 seconds, and the energy is strong (2200-4902). That’s expert territory. Tarcoola is an exposed break, so it’s gonna be a proper beast. The wind is favourable on Sunday morning – glassy with a light easterly – but the size is too much for this break. This is more of a tow-in or a spectator day for the brave.
The real standout comes on Monday the 20th. The swell drops to a still-chunky 6 ft from the SW, period 14 seconds, good energy (1044), and the wind swings offshore from the east with a light breeze – clean faces. This is the pick of the window for experienced surfers. The break is fairly consistent, and with offshore conditions, it’ll be holding nice lines. Crowds can be around sometimes, but with it being a Monday, you might luck out.
Tuesday the 21st morning is also worth a paddle – 4 ft, offshore from the east again, clean. It’s smaller, but it’ll be fun and workable. The next few days are a mixed bag; Wednesday the 22nd morning has a clean 6 ft with cross-off breeze, and Thursday the 23rd has a solid 7 ft with offshore wind, but it’s a strong breeze (30 km/h), so it’ll be a bit blown out. Thursday afternoon is better – 6 ft, light offshore from the east, and clean.
By the end of the first week and into the second, the swell starts to taper off. Friday the 24th afternoon is clean and 4 ft, Saturday the 25th afternoon is glassy but tiny at 4 ft, and Sunday the 26th is a write-off with small, weak swell. There’s a bit of a gap here with no real standouts.
Then, out of nowhere, a long-period groundswell pops up for Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th. The 29th morning has 3 ft, but with a very long period of 19 seconds and light offshore wind – that’s a sneaky, clean little wave. The 30th picks up to 5 ft, period 20 seconds, and energy is pumping (2291-2710), but the wind is a fresh cross-off or cross-shore, so it’ll be lumpy. Still, that period is rare – it’s a proper groundswell, and at a point or reef, it would be epic, but at a beach break like this, it might break a bit too straight. Worth a look for the experienced crew.
Final call: Monday the 20th morning is the best on offer – solid 6 ft SW, offshore, clean, and decent energy. Thursday the 23rd afternoon is a close second. The rest is either for experts or just a fun small-wave session.
Rusty.
