The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Tarcoola.
Right now, we’re looking at a solid run of SW groundswell on the way, but the wind is going to be the real story. We’ve got a bit of a wait for the truly clean stuff, so don’t get too excited about the first couple of days.
Saturday the 22nd kicks off with a powerful, very long-period SW groundswell pushing in at 5ft and an 18-second period. The combined energy is huge (2572). The morning sees a light N cross-off breeze, which will keep it clean for the advanced crew. But the swell is well over 5ft, so this is one for experienced surfers only at Tarcoola. The afternoon goes downhill fast as a strong SSW cross-on wind destroys the surface. Sunday the 23rd is a write-off with onshore winds and dropping, lumpy swell.
Now, Monday the 24th is a standout. The morning brings glassy conditions with a light WSW wind and a solid 7ft SW groundswell. The energy is still pumping (1776). However, at this size, it’s going to be too big and powerful for most, so only the experts should be looking at it. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual there.
Tuesday the 25th morning is a beauty. Glassy conditions again, with a light N breeze and a 4ft SW swell. It’s cleaner than a whistle and the energy is moderate (820). This is a proper window for a good session. The afternoon onshores spoil it.
Wednesday the 26th is a total loss – huge, lumpy swell and strong cross-on winds. Thursday the 27th morning has a clean cross-off wind, but that 8ft SW swell is just too big for this break, even for the experienced.
We then hit a bit of a flat spell. Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th see the swell drop right back. Saturday the 29th is actually quite nice with a 4ft SW swell and a moderate offshore breeze from the NE. The energy is low (585), but the conditions are clean. The afternoon gets even better with a glassy offshore and a very long period 3ft swell – a proper longboarder’s dream.
Sunday the 30th sees a new pulse of 7ft SW groundswell come in, but the wind is variable and not ideal. The morning is clean but a bit strong. Monday the 31st morning is another great call for the experienced. A light NNE breeze, clean conditions, and a solid 7ft SW groundswell with a very long 18-second period. The energy is strong (2429). This will be pumping but it’s a big, powerful wave, and crowds are sometimes an issue here, so keep that in mind.
Tuesday the 1st of September morning is similar – a light N cross-off, 6ft WSW swell, clean and powerful. The afternoons are all onshore chop from there on out. The rest of the first week of September is a mixed bag of onshore winds and marginal conditions, with a few clean morning windows that are either too small or blown out by the afternoon.
To sum it up, the absolute best on offer is the Monday 24th August morning for the experts looking for size and power in glassy conditions, and the Tuesday 25th August morning for a more manageable, clean session. Later on, the Saturday 29th August gives a small, clean, offshore day, and the Monday 31st August morning is another powerful, clean window for the experienced. Keep an eye on the wind, because when it’s glassy or offshore here, it’s as good as it gets.
Rusty.
