The Lowdown

Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the pipe for Tarcoola (Chanteez). It’s a bit of a slow burner this run, but there are some real gems for the patient and the experienced.

We start off with a pretty heavy pulse of swell that’s just too much for the setup here. The first few days are a write-off for a good paddle session. The combined energy is massive, hitting 2496 on Saturday morning, 18 July, and peaking at 4260 that afternoon with a 9.8ft SW swell. That’s serious power, but with a cross-on wind and those sizes, it’s a beast for experts only, and even then, the conditions are poor. That swell is too big for this break.

It stays big through Sunday, 19 July, with a 7.9ft SW swell in the morning dropping to 6.9ft in the afternoon. The morning actually looks clean with a cross-off breeze from the ESE, but again, the forecast says it’s too big for Tarcoola. Monday, 20 July, is a write-off too – marginal surf and choppy wind.

We’ve got a lull from Tuesday, 21 July, right through to Friday, 24 July. The swell drops right off, with heights hovering around 3.6ft to 5.2ft. The combined energy is low, under 1000, and the scores are poor. It’s a flat spell, plain and simple.

The standouts finally arrive.

If you’re an advanced surfer, your window opens on Thursday morning, 23 July. The swell is 5.2ft from the SW, with a solid 14-second period. The wind is a clean offshore from the ENE at 12 mph, making for excellent conditions. The combined energy is a solid 1092, showing there’s some push. This is the one to target for a proper session. Crowds are “sometimes” here, so you might get it with just a few others.

Keep an eye on Sunday, 26 July. It’s a long way out, but the morning is looking unreal: 4.3ft of SW swell with a very long 20-second period, offshore wind from the E at 6 mph, and that glassy, clean water. The combined energy is 1620. That long period will make the waves shape up beautifully at this point, and the paddle-out will be easy.

Monday, 27 July, morning is also a standout for the second week. You’re looking at a 6.2ft SW swell, 16-second period, and a clean offshore from the ENE. The energy is 1809. This is proper, powerful groundswell. It’s big, but not too big for an experienced crew.

Then we push into the end of the month and start of August. Wednesday, 29 July, morning has a surprise: 4.3ft swell with a 14-second period, but a combined energy of 1262? That’s a lot of punch for the size. Glassy clean conditions with a slight off-shore.

The absolute best day on offer, though, is Saturday morning, 1 August. The swell is 6.2ft from the SW, period of 17 seconds. The wind is a fresh 19 mph offshore from the NE. The combined energy is a strong 2091. That’s a full-on, powerful, clean groundswell. Then, Saturday afternoon? The wind goes glassy with a 5.9ft SW swell. That’s the magic window. Get ready for that.

Final tip: This is a break for the experienced. Anything over 8.2ft here is expert territory, and the forecast has some big days. The long period swells (over 15 seconds) will be best at this point break, giving you long, lined-up walls. The crowds can be “sometimes” busy, so the early morning sessions on the standouts will be your best bet.

Stay stoked.
