Table - best surf conditions forecast for Tarcoola (Chanteez) over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cooking at Tarcoola (Chanteez).
First up, the water is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, sitting at 68°. That’s 2° cooler than average, so you’ll feel that chill if you’re not wearing a decent suit.
The forecast starts with a solid pulse of swell. Thursday afternoon (July 9th) we’ve got a 6ft WSW swell at 14 seconds, but it’s blown out by a cross-on light breeze. The combined energy is a meaty 1427 (moderate to strong), but it’s messy. Not worth paddling out for.
Friday morning (July 10th) is where it gets interesting. Swell drops to 5ft from the SW at 13 seconds, but the wind goes clean with a cross-off SE breeze. Combined energy is 606 (moderate). The surf is expected to be very good, clean conditions. That’s a real window of opportunity.
Saturday (July 11th) is a no-go. The swell drops to 3ft and the wind goes cross with a moderate breeze both sessions. Poor surf, not worth a look.
Now, Sunday July 12th through Tuesday July 14th – here’s the big energy. We’re talking a 7ft to 8ft SW groundswell with a very long period of 16 to 17 seconds. Combined energy is massive, hitting 2694 on Sunday morning and peaking at 3392 on Monday afternoon. These are strong to very strong wave energy readings. But here’s the catch: the forecast says the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. It’s over 8ft, which means it’s only for experts, and even then, with that long period, it’s going to be a beast. The wind is mostly clean and offshore, especially on Tuesday morning with a 15 mph NE offshore. If you’re an experienced surfer and you know this break, Tuesday morning (July 14th) could be a standout for the dedicated few, but it’s a big, powerful wave. The wind is offshore and clean, but the size is intimidating.
For the rest of the first week into the second, the swell stays in the 5ft to 7ft range, but the wind is often cross-off or fresh. The standout looks like Wednesday afternoon (July 15th) with a 5ft SW swell, 13 seconds, and a light offshore ENE breeze. Combined energy is 862 (moderate). The surf is expected to be very good again. That’s a solid, clean afternoon.
Friday July 17th is a washout – rain showers, strong cross-on winds, messy surf. Avoid.
The highlight of the second week, and maybe the whole outlook, is Wednesday July 22nd morning. We’ve got a 6ft SW swell at a very long 17 seconds, combined energy of 1996 (strong), a light cross-off E breeze, and the forecast says excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers. The crowd factor is “sometimes,” so you might have some company, but the quality should be there. That’s the one to circle on the calendar.
Thursday July 23rd morning also looks clean with a 5ft SW swell, 14 seconds, and a glassy offshore NE breeze at just 3 mph. Combined energy is 1092 (moderate to strong). The forecast says excellent surf for experienced surfers. Another good call.
Overall, the standout is Tuesday July 14th for the big, clean offshore swell for experts only, and Wednesday July 22nd for the long-period groundswell with clean conditions. There’s a lot of action in the 5ft to 7ft range with mostly clean wind, but the size and power on those dates are the real draw. The water is a bit colder than usual, so suit up.
Rusty.
