The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. We’re looking at a solid run of SW groundswell over the next couple weeks at Tarcoola (Chanteez). It’s an advanced spot, exposed to the SW, so when the sets roll in, they’ve got some proper push. The water temp sits about average for this time of year, nothing wild to report.
The best of the bunch? That’s got to be Monday morning, July 20th. We’re starting with a clean 5ft SW swell, period at a nice 13 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. Winds are light cross-off from the SE at just 9 mph, keeping the face smooth. The combined energy is solid (892), not overwhelming, just right for powerful walls. It’s an exposed spot, so you’ll get the full force, but the crowds are only sometimes a problem, so you might score some alone time.
Now, the standout – and I mean the one to circle on the calendar – is Monday morning, July 27th. Swell jumps to 8ft from the SW, period hits 15 seconds, and the energy is pumping hard (3142). That's big, heavy surf for experts only. But the wind is offshore from the ESE at 12 mph, which will groom it into perfection. This break handles big SW groundswell well, being exposed and an advanced wave. Just know that at this size, it’s not for beginners – you need your wits about you.
Wednesday afternoon, July 29th, is another cracker. Clean 5ft SW swell with a very long 17-second period, energy at 1160. Light SE cross-off breeze keeps it tidy. That low-period gap between sets will make paddling out easier, and the shape will be drawn-out and powerful – best on the reef or point sections if they’re working.
Heading into the second week, there’s a promising window Monday morning, August 3rd. Glassy conditions with a light ESE breeze, 5ft SW swell at 14 seconds, energy around 1211. It’s clean and solid – a classic winter morning. That’s a bit less certain this far out, but if it holds, it’ll be worth the wait.
There’s a few rougher patches – like Sunday July 26th afternoon with onshore wind and chop, or the big blowy days in early August – but overall, this stretch has more good than bad. If you’re after the true standouts, July 27th morning is the big one, and July 29th afternoon is the sleeper pick.
Rusty.
