The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here.
Alright, we’re going to break down the next couple of weeks at Tarcoola (Chanteez). It starts slow, so don’t rush.
There’s a gap of about two days with no good surf. Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th are a write-off – strong cross-winds and messy water. Waves are about 5 to 5ft, but the energy is moderate (1051 to 1102) and the long 15-second period can make it close out at a beach break. Just wait it out.
By Saturday the 18th, it gets big. You’ve got a solid 8ft to 10ft SW groundswell with a very long 14-15 second period. Combined energy jumps to 2732 and 3867 (strong). That’s a lot of power. The wind eases Saturday afternoon, but that size is for experts only. Sunday the 19th holds at 8ft, clean conditions, cross-offshore breeze. Still heavy – 2325 energy (strong). Respect it.
Now for the good stuff. Monday the 20th morning is a winner. Swell drops to 5ft from the southwest, with a solid 13-second period. Clean cross-offshore winds and a light breeze. Combined energy is 928 (moderate). This is the best bet for most surfers in the first week. Water temp is about average for the time of year.
Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd stay clean, with offshore breezes in the mornings. Swell around 4ft to 5ft, energy in the 700 to 1000 range (moderate). Wednesday morning has a true offshore from the east – that’ll be glassy. Tarcoola can get a crowd sometimes, but these are worth it.
The second week opens strong. Thursday the 23rd morning is excellent for experienced surfers – 5ft SW, 14-second period, clean. Friday the 24th keeps it clean with 4ft swell and offshore winds.
Swell drops over the 25th and 26th – around 3ft to 4ft – still rideable but small. The real standout is Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th. Wednesday morning brings a 4ft WSW swell with a very long 19-second period, clean and offshore from the northeast. Energy hits 1981 (strong). That’s a serious groundswell with long, lined-up waves. Thursday morning is similar – 6ft WSW at 16 seconds, offshore from the east, energy 1835 (strong). Both are excellent for experienced surfers.
And for the 31st? A massive 12ft WSW groundswell with a 17-second period and energy at 7136 (very strong). That’s for the brave only.
Final call: If you want clean, manageable surf, go for Monday the 20th morning. For the big, quality groundswell for experienced crew, lock in Wednesday the 29th morning. Promising, but keep watching.
Rusty.
