The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's cooking for Tarcoola (Chanteez) over the next couple of weeks.
We've got a classic run of solid, powerful SW groundswell coming through, but it's all about timing. The week starts with a lot of juice that's too much for this break, then we get a sweet window of clean, manageable waves, a little lull, and then a massive pulse right at the end. The standout is Thursday afternoon, the 23rd of July, with a solid second look at the end of the month.
We're kicking off Sunday, the 19th of July, with a big, powerful SW groundswell. The morning shows 8ft with a 15-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 2457, which is very strong. It's clean with a cross-off SE breeze, but it's just too big and powerful for Tarcoola. That's a storm swell, not a paddle wave. The afternoon cleans up a bit, but it's still 7ft and cross. No good for a surfboard.
Monday the 20th, the swell drops to a much friendlier 5ft, still from the SW with a solid 13-second period. The morning is clean with a cross-off SE breeze at 9 mph. The combined energy is moderate at 892. This is a much better look, but the forecast is a bit lukewarm. The afternoon gets a bit grotty with a side-shore S wind.
From Tuesday the 21st through Wednesday the 22nd, we are in a bit of a holding pattern. The swell hangs around 4ft to 6ft, SW direction, with moderate energy. The winds are clean, cross-off for the most part, but the forecast is marginal. It's not terrible, but nothing special.
Now, Thursday the 23rd of July is the pick of the first week. The morning is a bit too wind-affected with a 19 mph offshore ENE, but the afternoon is the money shot. We get a clean 5ft SW swell with a 14-second period, combined energy of 1063, and the wind swings to a light E breeze at 9 mph. It's glassy, clean, and punchy. That's a proper session for the experienced crew. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, no real anomaly.
Friday the 24th, the swell drops off. The morning is weak, but the afternoon turns glassy with a 4ft, 13-second period and a light E breeze. It's a small, clean, fun option.
The weekend of the 25th and 26th is a bit of a write-off. The swell is small, and the wind is junk. The 26th has rain showers and a cross-on wind, sloppy. Skip it.
We get a bit of a pulse Monday the 27th, with 7ft SW swell and 14-second period, but it's marginal with a moderate SE breeze.
Then, Friday the 31st of July is worth a mention. We get a solid 6ft pulse from the WSW with a 17-second period, combined energy of 2150, and a clean cross-off SE breeze. That's a lot of energy and a very long period. This is a groundswell for the reefs and points, but at Tarcoola, a beach break, that long period might make it a bit straight and walled up. Still, with that clean wind, it's a solid option for the experienced boys.
Finally, we get a massive pulse on the 1st of August. Saturday morning shows 10ft SW swell with a 14-second period. The energy is off the charts at 3361. The wind is a light offshore NE, but that size is just too big for this break. Only for the very kamikaze. The 2nd of August looks better, with a clean 5ft, 18-second period on Sunday morning, with glassy conditions. That's a very long period, so again, a bit tricky for the beach break, but the energy is strong at 2608. The afternoon is 8ft, which is pushing it again.
So, for the best windows, lock in Thursday afternoon the 23rd of July for clean, solid, manageable waves. Then keep an eye on Friday the 31st of July for a big, clean groundswell that might be a bit weird but worth a look. The first week of August is all about the monster swells, so you'll need a big board and a bigger pair.
