The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be honest, this is a rough one for St Brelade’s Bay. We’re looking at a long, dry spell before anything even remotely worth paddling out for shows up, and even then it’s a tease.
The immediate outlook is grim. From Monday the 31st of August right through to Friday the 5th of September, it’s a write-off. We’ve got a messy, lumpy, cross-onshore slog with a fresh breeze blowing on Monday, dropping a bit into Tuesday, but the wind is still chopping things up. The energy is mostly moderate (1004 down to 43), but the quality is just poor. The swell is swinging from 8ft down to 2ft, but it’s all wind-affected junk. Not worth a look.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Saturday the 6th of September. The morning is still pretty marginal with a 4ft WNW swell, but the wind swings to a cross-off from the north, and the water’s clean. The energy is moderate (326). Then Saturday afternoon gets a bit better. The swell drops to 4ft from the WNW, but the period stretches to 12 seconds, which is proper groundswell. The wind is a light cross-off, and the waves are clean. It’s a 2/10 on the score, but honestly, after the last few days, that looks like a miracle. The energy is still moderate (349).
Sunday the 7th is a letdown. The swell shrinks again and the wind is offshore or glassy, but the waves are just too small. Monday and Tuesday the 8th and 9th don’t offer much until Tuesday morning. That’s our standout. On Tuesday the 8th of September, the morning is glassy – dead calm – with a 5ft W swell. The energy jumps to strong (878). That’s the one. Clean, solid, and the wind is perfect. The afternoon holds up with a light offshore, but the period drops off a bit. This is the only window where you’ll see a proper wave.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. From Wednesday the 9th onwards, the wind gets nasty again, the swell drops out, and the energy is weak (under 100). The water temperature is about normal for the time of year, so no surprises there.
So, to sum it up: the best surf on offer is Tuesday morning, the 8th of September. That’s the one to circle. Everything else is a wait-and-see or a skip. For a spot that’s already inconsistent, this blank run is a bit of a bummer, but it won’t stay this way forever.
