The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a rough one. We’re looking at a solid 16-day window, but the surf conditions are consistently poor, and there’s not a single recommendation for a good session on the cards. The whole period is a write-off for paddle surfing.

The issue is that the wind is a persistent problem. From Friday morning, August 7th, right through to the end of the forecast, we’re looking at a relentless cross-onshore flow out of the East and ESE, mostly blowing at 12 to 19 mph. This is creating choppy, lumpy, and generally terrible conditions. The main break on offer is Shandrani Hotel (reef), an advanced-level reef break that’s fairly exposed to the swell. It’s an inconsistent spot, so it needs a good alignment to work, and it’s just not getting it.

The water temperature is sitting at 76°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.

Let’s run through the dates. The first few days, from August 7th through the 14th, we’ve got moderate to strong wave energy with swell heights between 7 ft and 10 ft from the East or ESE. The period is mostly 9 to 11 seconds, which is average. But with that constant cross-on wind, it’s just a messy, lumpy, and choppy mess. The swell is big enough to be too much for beginners, but the quality is so poor that it’s not even worth it for the experienced crew.

Things get a bit weird around August 15th and 16th. The wave energy jumps up significantly, with the swell direction swinging to the South and SSW, and the period stretching out to 16 to 20 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The swell height is 4 ft to 8 ft. The problem is, the wind is still cross-onshore or onshore, and the long period is going to make those waves break too straight for a beach or reef setup like this. It’s a lot of energy but no quality.

From August 17th into the 22nd, the energy starts to drop off, and the swell sizes ease off to 3 ft to 5 ft. The period comes down to 8 to 11 seconds. The wind is still a problem, with fresh cross-onshore breezes most of the time. It’s just a long, flat, and windy run.

Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. With the strong cross-onshore winds and consistent swell, it’s a kiteboarder’s dream, but for us wave riders, it’s a total bust. The entire 16 days is a blank run. For this area, that’s not unusual when the trade winds lock in.

Keep an eye on the charts, but for now, I’d say give the board a rest. The forecasts can change, but this one looks pretty stubborn.

Rusty.
