The Lowdown

Oi, it's Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for our local patch, Souillac. It's a reef and point set-up that works best when the swell's coming from the southwest. The water's sitting at a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, 76°F to be precise, about 3°F above the average, so it's a bit more pleasant than usual.

Right, the outlook is a bit of a mixed bag, and there's a fair bit of wind to contend with, so we're not looking at perfect conditions for a while. The first proper surf window that's worth getting excited about doesn't really start until Wednesday the 11th of August. Before that, from Wednesday the 5th right through to Tuesday the 10th, we've got a consistent run of 7ft to 10ft easterly swell, but it's always accompanied by a fresh to moderate breeze from the east or east-southeast, which is a cross-off or cross wind. The combined wave energy is moderate to very strong (1324 to 2986), but the wind just keeps the quality from being top-notch. The swell period is short too, around 8 to 9 seconds, so not a lot of punch.

Now, the standout action looks like it's going to be on Saturday the 15th and Sunday the 16th of August. On Saturday afternoon, we're looking at a 7ft swell from the south-southwest, which is a great direction for this break, and the period is a very long 18 seconds – that's proper groundswell energy. The wind swings around to a cross-off from the east at 19 mph, which will keep the faces clean. The combined wave energy is massive, a whopping 4232, so there's plenty of power. Sunday the 16th keeps the good times rolling with a similar 7ft south-southwest swell, a 17-second period, and a lighter cross-off breeze from the east at 16 mph. This is the best run of the forecast. That long period groundswell should wrap nicely into the point, offering well-shaped lines. It's a fairly consistent spot, but crowds are possible. With the swell size around the 7ft mark, it's still manageable for a confident intermediate, but not for a beginner.

The week after that, from Monday the 17th, the swell starts to drop off and the wind stays messy, with the combined energy falling away. By Tuesday the 18th, it's down to 3ft and the forecast gives a big thumbs down.

So, to sum it up, the first week is a write-off with tricky winds. The real window to circle is Saturday the 15th and Sunday the 16th of August. That's where we get the best swell direction, and the long period groundswell will be a treat for the point. Get out there if you can.

Rusty.
