The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the next couple of weeks for this spot.

The first few days are a bit of a tease. We’ve got clean, offshore winds but the swell is just too weak to get excited about. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 77°, which is nice, but we’re looking at a long wait for the real energy to show up.

From Tuesday, August 4th through to the end of the first week, the south swell is there but it’s small, mostly in the 2 ft to 3 ft range. The wind is offshore from the ESE, which is perfect for Manawa, but the wave energy is weak. The waves are clean, but it’s a real struggle to get a decent ride. This is marginal at best.

Things start to pick up on Saturday, August 8th. The swell bumps up to 4 ft – 4 ft from the SSW, and the period gets long at 17-18 seconds. That’s some proper groundswell. The combined energy gets moderate. It’s still offshore, so the face will be glassy. This is where it starts to look interesting.

The standout window is without a doubt the weekend of August 15th and 16th. On Saturday, August 15th, we see a solid 7 ft groundswell from the SSW with a 19-second period. The combined energy is very strong. The wind is offshore from the E at 15 mph, keeping it clean. This is expert territory, though. That swell is over 8 ft, so it’s not for the faint-hearted.

Then Sunday, August 16th, is the pick of the bunch. The morning brings a 8 ft SSW swell at 17 seconds, with the combined energy pumping. The wind is a moderate offshore breeze from the ESE at 12 mph. This is excellent surf for experienced crew. The wave quality is going to be top-notch. Expect long, powerful lines. The crowds are likely here, but for a wave this good, it’s worth it.

After that, the swell eases back through the following week, but it stays clean and rideable. By Wednesday, August 19th, it’s back to small 3 ft stuff.

So, the best bet is clear: Sunday, August 16th at Manawa, with the big 8 ft SSW groundswell and clean offshore wind. Saturday, August 15th is a close second with the 7 ft SSW swell. Get on it if you’re experienced.

Rusty.
