The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down what the next two weeks are looking like. The first week is pretty flat and forgettable. You’d be better off checking the tide pools. The second week shows some size coming in, but the wind is going to be a real problem.
The first real chance of a wave is on the morning of Friday, 25 July. Even then, it’s marginal. The best of a not-great bunch is St Tugen (Finistère) on the morning of Monday, 27 July. The swell is hitting 7ft from the west, with a solid amount of energy (1082). But the wind is a moderate cross-onshore breeze at 16 mph, making it choppy and lumpy. That’s a lot of power, but it’s going to be a messy, grunty paddle. At that size, it’s really only for the experienced crew. The water temp is about average for the time of year.
Friday, 25 July – The morning shows a marginal swell of 3ft from the west-northwest, with a gentle cross-shore breeze. It’s not terrible, but the energy is moderate (286). The afternoon turns more onshore and messy.
Saturday, 26 July – Swell builds to 4ft in the morning, but with a moderate cross-onshore wind, it’s choppy. The afternoon gets worse, with a fresh cross-onshore wind and lumpy seas as the swell hits 5ft.
Sunday, 27 July – This is the biggest and most powerful day of the whole window. The morning has 7ft west swell, energy of 1082, but it’s cross-onshore and choppy. The afternoon stays similar with 7ft, but the wind gets stronger. This is more of a body-slamming session than a groomed wave.
Monday, 28 July – Still big, with 6ft west swell, but the wind is onshore and fresh. Short-period, messy, and lumpy. Not a day for a log.
Tuesday, 29 July – The swell drops to 4ft, but the wind is still onshore, making it a marginal call. The combined energy is still strong (700), but the quality is poor.
Wednesday, 30 July – The last day in the window shows 7ft from the southwest, but it’s a short period (7 seconds) and a fresh onshore wind. That’s a messy, wash-through day.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a no-go. The second week brings some decent-sized swell, but the wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore, ruining the quality. The morning of Monday, 27 July is the closest thing to a standout, but only if you’re ready for a battle. It’s a long wait for something that’s not really a classic.
