Table - best surf conditions forecast for St Tugen over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for the next couple of weeks.
First up, the water’s sitting at 64° which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year – about a degree and a half up, so noticeably pleasant for a morning paddle.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start. The first real session worth looking at is Thursday morning, July 9, at St Tugen. It’s small, 3 ft from the west with a 10-second period, and the wind is offshore from the NE at 9 mph. That’s clean, glassy conditions on offer. The combined energy is moderate (120). It’s not pumping, but it’s surfable and clean – a good way to ease into the day. Crowds are possible here, so you might have company.
Friday morning, July 10, is another decent shout. Slightly bigger at 3 ft, still from the west-northwest, with a light cross-offshore breeze from the ESE at 6 mph. The swell energy bumps up a bit (142), and it’s clean. Not a standout, but a solid small-wave option.
Saturday morning, July 11, brings more of the same: 3 ft from the west, 10-second period, offshore ENE wind at 9 mph, clean. Then Saturday afternoon turns glassy – 2 ft, 10 seconds, and barely a breath of wind from the ESE at 3 mph. The energy drops to 92, so weak, but if you want a smooth, tiny wave session, that’s your window.
After that, we hit a dry spell. From Sunday, July 12, right through to Wednesday, July 23, the surf is pretty poor. Waves shrink, winds turn messy, and the energy is low. There are a few mornings with clean conditions, but the swell is tiny – mostly under 2 ft. It’s a long gap of about 11 days with nothing worth recommending.
Then, on Thursday morning, July 23, something interesting pops up. The swell is small at 1 ft, but it’s coming from the west-northwest with a very long period of 14 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is moderate (121). The wind is light and cross-shore from the NW at 6 mph. That long period will make for tidy, lined-up waves on a point or reef, but at a beach break it might be too straight. It’s a tease, not a goer for size.
The real standout lands on Friday, July 24. Morning brings 5 ft from the west-northwest with a 7-second period, and the wind is cross-shore from the NW at 9 mph. The energy is strong (227). It’s marginal, but the afternoon pushes 5 ft from the same direction, with a cross-onshore wind from the west at 16 mph. That’s a bit choppy, and over 5 ft, it’s getting too big for beginners. For the experienced crew, there’s some push there, but the wind is a letdown. Keep an eye on it, but don’t get your hopes up.
Overall, the first few days are worth a paddle if you’re desperate, and the last Friday might have some grunt for the experts. The middle is a total write-off.
Rusty.
