The Lowdown
Alright, let’s swap over to imperial and give it to you straight from the coast. It’s a quiet, frustrating outlook for St Tugen, and I’m not going to sugarcoat it. We’re looking at a long stretch with barely a ripple worth chasing. The next couple of weeks are mostly flat, with small windows of opportunity that are still a long way off.
Right now and through the first week, the swell is tiny – mostly under 3ft. The energy is low, with combined values in the teens to low forties. Just not enough push. The swell is coming from the west and northwest, which is fine, but there’s no size behind it. The 23rd of July morning is the first faint glimmer – a 3ft NW swell with a short 6-second period, but at least the NNE offshore breeze will keep it clean. It’s barely surfable, but it’s something.
Then we hit a gap. From the 24th through the 30th of July, there’s a bit more energy, but the wind is a problem. The 25th and 26th see waves pushing 4ft to 6ft from the WNW, with combined energy in the hundreds, even hitting 282 on the 25th afternoon. But it’s cross-shore and choppy – not the clean, lined-up waves we want. That kind of messy, cross-shore wind is more interesting for kite surfers than paddle surfers.
For the hardy types, the 30th of July morning offers a 3ft NW swell with an offshore NNE breeze – clean, but small. The wind is light, so it’ll be tidy. That’s probably your best bet across the whole period. After that, the first days of August drop right back off, with waves under 2ft and onshore winds. The water is running at about 67°F, which is a bit warmer than normal for the season – but that’s about the only positive.
So, here it is: there’s no real standout in this forecast. If you’re desperate, the 30th of July morning is your best bet for a clean, smaller session. Otherwise, you might as well save the wax.
Rusty.
