The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s on the menu for Redcar Scars. It’s one of those forecasts where patience pays off, but the good stuff is real.
Right now, it’s quiet. Starting Friday the 21st of August, we’ve got messy conditions. Swell around 6ft from the north but cross-onshore winds and short intervals make it a no-go. The wave energy is moderate at best on Friday afternoon, hitting 496, but it’s lumpy. Saturday the 22nd is more of the same – 6ft from the NNE but still choppy. Sunday morning the 23rd clears up a bit, with clean conditions and a cross-offshore breeze, but the swell drops to 4ft from the NNE and the energy is weak at 185. It’s rideable, but nothing to write home about. From Monday the 24th through to Wednesday the 3rd of September, it’s basically flat. Swell sits under 3ft most days, often with poor conditions. That’s a solid 9-day stretch where the board can stay in the car.
Then the real story begins. On Thursday the 3rd of September afternoon, a big pulse shows up – 8ft from the NE with a period of 7 seconds and very strong energy of 595. Clean conditions, but that’s expert territory, especially on a reef. The standout, without a doubt, is Friday the 4th of September. Both morning and afternoon are firing. We’re looking at 8ft swell from the north, 8 to 9 second period, and offshore winds keeping things clean. The energy is massive – 1018 in the morning and 943 in the afternoon. This is serious, powerful surf. Saturday the 5th keeps the run going with 7ft from the NNE, clean conditions, and by the afternoon it goes glassy. That’s a dream session. The energy is still strong at 750 to 775.
Water temp is around 61°, about average for this time of year – nothing unusual.
Beginners, stay clear of that first week of September – 8ft at a reef is no joke. For the experienced surfers, Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th are your best bets. This spot doesn’t fire often, so when it does, it’s special. Keep an eye on the crowd situation, too – it can get busy on the good days.
So, ride out the quiet spell, and pencil in the 4th and 5th of September for some serious waves.
Rusty.
