The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the Redcar area. It’s a bit of a tough stretch, to be honest. We’ve got a new moon on the 4th of September, but the surf is mostly a no-show for a long time.
The only real beacon in the darkness is Redcar Scars. It’s a reef break, so it needs a specific swell direction to work, and it’s inconsistent, which means it doesn’t break all that often. The water temperature is sitting about average for the time of year.
For the first few days, it’s a write-off. The swell is tiny, or the wind is onshore and messy. There’s a brief flicker on the morning of Sunday the 23rd of August, where a 4ft swell from the NNE meets a light cross-offshore breeze, but it’s still just ordinary. Then we hit a massive gap. From Monday the 24th of August right through to the end of the month, the forecast is grim – small, choppy, and onshore. It’s not worth getting wet.
The first real glimmer of hope comes right at the end of the period. On the morning of Monday the 31st of August, the wind goes glassy, and a 5ft NNE swell rolls in with moderate wave energy (240). This is clean, but it’s a one-off. The wind then swings onshore again.
The best bet, and the only true standout, is looking like the morning of Wednesday the 2nd of September. The wind is light and cross-offshore, the swell is 5ft from the NNE, and the conditions are clean. The wave energy is moderate (280). The following day, Thursday the 3rd of September, also looks promising with a 5ft+ NNE swell and a clean offshore breeze, though it’s a bit windier. For a reef break that’s often flat, this is a good little window. The 5 to 5ft+ swell is a fun size for a reef, but it’s probably too much for a beginner. The crew will be out, but it’s a reef, so you’ll get a proper wave. If you can only pick one day, make it the 2nd of September.
Stay safe.
Rusty.
