The Lowdown
Right then, let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks. To be honest, it’s a bit of a quiet spell ahead. The first real chance of getting a wave under your arm isn’t until Monday the 24th of August, so that’s nearly a full week of flat, small conditions before anything remotely surfable shows up.
For the entire 16-day window, Redcar Scars (reef) is the only spot we’ve got to talk about. It’s an inconsistent little reef, mainly for beginners, and it’s a break that only really works with the wind and swell from a very specific northerly direction.
Heading into the first part of the period, things are just flat. Through the 20th and 21st, we see a bit of a pulse in the combined swell energy, hitting a moderate 166 (moderate wave energy) on Thursday the 20th and a strong 505 (strong wave energy) by Friday the 21st, with swell heights around 5 ft to 6 ft from the north. But the wind is howling onshore from the north, gusting up to 22 mph, and the swell period is a short 6 seconds. The water temp is about 60°, which is pretty average for this time of year. Honestly, with those conditions, it’s going to be a lumpy, choppy mess – more of a kite-surfing session than a paddle-surfing one.
The best bet, if you can call it that, lands on Monday the 24th of August. It’s not a standout, it’s just the least worst. The swell drops back to a tiny 3 ft from the north-northeast, but we get a light south wind at 6 mph, blowing cross-offshore, which cleans it right up. The combined wave energy is a weak 113 (weak wave energy) and period is short at 8 seconds, so the waves will be small and weak, but at least it won’t be blown out. It’s surfable, but just barely.
After that, it’s back to the flat stuff. A couple of days in late August see some offshore winds, but with swell heights of 0.7 ft or 1.0 ft, you’re just bobbing about. The only half-interesting thing is on the 31st of August and 1st of September, where we have strong, clean offshore winds (25-28 mph) but the swell is a pitiful 0.3 ft with a very long period (12-13 seconds). Those long-period waves will be impossible to paddle into at a spot like this, so it’s a no-go.
So, the bottom line: there’s no real standout session here. If you’re desperate and a beginner, Monday the 24th of August is your only window for a tiny, clean-ish wave. Otherwise, the rest of the period is a write-off for decent surf. It’s one of those blank runs that’s pretty normal for this area when the swell direction isn't right.
