Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a proper look at what the next couple of weeks are serving up for us.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: things are looking pretty grim for a solid stretch. The forecast is basically flat and junk for the first ten days or so. We’re looking at a long, frustrating gap. From the start of the period right through until around the 17th of July, it’s just not worth paddling out at the only spot on the radar – Redcar Scars. The swell is tiny, the wind is all wrong, mostly cross-onshore, and the report is just “poor surf conditions” again and again. It’s a real bummer.
There is a little bit of hope, but it's a long way off. Now, the energy starts to build around the 16th of July, but the wind is still messy. We get a moderate onshore wind and choppy conditions with swell building to 6ft. It’s not clean, but you can feel the ocean waking up. The real event, the one that has my heart beating a little faster, is shaping up for Saturday the 18th of July.
Saturday the 18th of July is the one to circle on your calendar. For the early morning, Redcar Scars is looking like a proper standout. We’re talking a solid NNE swell, pushing 8ft. That’s expert territory, big and powerful, so leave the mini-mals at home. The period is a healthy 9 seconds, giving it some real grunt, and the combined swell energy is pumping at 994 – that’s strong stuff. But the real magic is the wind. It’s going to be glassy. Dead calm. That’s a massive, massive positive for a spot that usually gets battered by the wind. It will be clean, lined-up, and pushing serious water. Water temp is around 58°, which is about average for the time of year.
Just a heads up on Redcar Scars: it’s a reef break, and it’s inconsistent, meaning those long waits between sets are part of the deal. The crowd factor is ‘sometimes’, so you might have a few others with the same idea, but on an 8ft day at a reef, there should be plenty of waves to go around if you’ve got the skills. There is also a chance the Saturday afternoon session could be a bit of a letdown if the wind swings onshore, so that early window is your best bet.
The following morning, Sunday the 19th of July, still has some size at 6ft with a side-shore wind, but the wave quality drops off a notch. Not terrible, but not the highlight. Then on Monday the 20th of July, we see a lovely shift: a strong WNW cross-offshore wind. That’s a sweet wind direction for this spot, keeping it clean, with a 7ft swell from the NNE. It’s not quite the stand-out day, but a solid, good option for those who miss the Saturday window.
So, to sum it up: the first week and a half is a write-off. Don't waste your time. But the forecast for Saturday the 18th of July at Redcar Scars has me genuinely excited. A big, clean, glassy groundswell is a rare treat. Get on it if you can.
Stay wet,
Rusty
