The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s chew the fat on what’s coming down the pipe. I’ve got to be honest with you – it’s a dry spell for a while. We’re looking at a long stretch of nothing before anything even worth paddling out for shows up.
The next 8 days are a total washout. From Sunday the 19th of July right through to the end of the month, it’s ugly. We’ve got a persistent NNE swell, but it’s battling constant cross-onshore winds that are just tearing it apart. The wave energy is weak, barely registering for most of that time, and the few pulses that do come through are too short-period to offer any real shape. You’re better off saving the wax.
Finally, on Tuesday the 28th of July, we get a glimmer of hope. Redcar Scars (reef) is the only game in town, and it’s a bit of a roll of the dice. We’ve got a clean, cross-offshore wind from the West, with a 8ft swell from the N. That’s a solid, moderate wave energy pulse. The period is only 8 seconds, so it’s not a classic groundswell, but that clean wind is going to be a major positive. The water temp is about average for July, so no surprises there.
Now, this is a tricky one. The break is a reef, which is good, but it’s also described as "inconsistent" and "rarely breaks". So, when it does come in with a bit of size like this, it’s a notable event. The 8ft is a bit much for beginners, but for the more experienced crew, that’s the only window in the entire 16-day forecast that looks like it could hold a decent wave. The morning session on Tuesday is the clear standout. The afternoon is still rideable but the wind picks up.
After that Tuesday morning pulse, the energy drops away fast. The wind stays clean for a few days, but the swell fades to nothing. We’re looking at another week of tiny, underpowered conditions. By the time we hit the 3rd of August, the wind is howling offshore, but there’s no swell to push.
So, there you have it. A long, painful wait, but one sharp, clean Tuesday morning on the 28th of July that might just make it all worthwhile. Keep your eyes on that one.
Rusty.
