The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for our stretch of coast.
Straight up, I’ve got to be honest with you – this is a tough 16-day outlook. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with very little to get excited about. The first few days are a write-off, and honestly, it’s not until the final two days of the period that we might see a small window of something rideable. There’s a big gap of poor surf from the start right through to the end of July.
The first day that even comes close to being worth a look is Thursday, the 23rd of July. The swell is tiny at Redcar Scars – a weak 3 ft from the NNE with a short and snappy 6-second period. The combined energy is a measly 89, so don’t expect any power. The one saving grace is a light, cross-offshore wind from the west that’s making the surface clean. Honestly, it’s surfable but very ordinary. You’d be going for a paddle, not a proper session.
After that, we’re back to clean, offshore winds from the 24th of July onwards, but the swell completely dries up. We’re talking heights of 1 ft to 2 ft, with periods of 4 to 5 seconds and energy readings in the single digits. It’s the kind of flatness that’s more suited to a longboard on a lake than a surfboard. The water temp is about 59°, which is normal for this time of year.
The only glimmer in the whole 16-day window comes on the 1st of August, a Saturday, and it’s a long way off, so keep that in mind. The morning shows a 5 ft swell from the east, with a 6-second period, and a clean, cross-offshore breeze from the WNW. The combined energy is 154, which is at least a workable number. The afternoon picks up a touch to 5 ft, but the wind picks up to a fresh 18 mph, which will make it bumpy. It’s not a standout by any stretch, but it’s the best we’ve got. For a beginner, 5 ft might be a bit much, especially with the wind, but for a competent surfer, it’s the only wave worth checking.
So, to wrap it up: the first two weeks are a bust. The one to circle on the calendar is the 1st of August, but temper your expectations. It’s more of a “maybe” than a “must-do.”
Rusty.
