The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get honest about the next 16 days at Redcar Scars. I’ve looked this one over, and I’ve got to be straight with you: it’s a tough stretch. The forecast is a long run of poor surf conditions, with not a single day waving a green flag. The first real chance of anything even worth mentioning is a full week away, and even that is a massive stretch.

The water temp is sitting around 59°, which is about average for the time of year, nothing wild there.

The first week, from Wednesday the 15th through to around Tuesday the 22nd of July, is a write-off. We’re looking at tiny swell, mostly 1ft to 2ft, and the wind is locked in from the north or north-northeast, which is cross-on or onshore. The combined wave energy is gutless, mostly in the double digits (27, 25, 13) – that’s weak, weak stuff. The period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s just wind chop. The conditions are consistently described as "poor surf." There’s nothing to get excited about.

Then, on Sunday the 19th, we get a spike in size. The swell jumps to 7ft from the NNE, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy hits 576 (moderate wave energy). That sounds like something, but the wind is still a moderate cross-onshore at 16 mph, keeping it choppy and messy. The afternoon session on that Sunday gets a "marginal" rating – the only time the score nudges above zero in the whole run. The wind drops to a gentle breeze, 9 mph onshore, but the comment is still "marginal surf forecast." That 7ft is getting into the "too big for beginners" territory, but with those conditions, it’s just gonna be a lumpy, difficult paddle for anyone.

After that, the swell drops back down. We get a day on Monday the 20th with 4ft, but the energy is back down to 142, and the wind is cross-on. From there, it fades into tiny, weak surf again for the rest of the month. There’s a moment on Saturday the 25th morning where the wind goes glassy, but the swell is a pathetic 2ft with a 6-second period. It’s flat. The last few days of the month, from the 28th to the 30th, the swell disappears entirely – they’re showing zero swell height.

So, the long and short of it: for the whole 16-day window, there is no standout. There is no good day. The one "marginal" window on Sunday afternoon the 19th is the only thing that even blips on the radar, and it’s not something I’d be paddling out for. It’s a blank run. For an inconsistent reef like Redcar Scars, this kind of quiet spell is normal. Don’t write it off forever; forecasts can change, but for now, keep the boards in the van.

Rusty.
