The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
First off, I’ve got to be straight with you – the outlook for Redcar Scars (reef) is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, dry spell before anything even sniffs at being rideable. The forecast shows a solid run of poor surf conditions right through the end of August and into the start of September. The waves are small, the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the energy is just not there. The water temp is sitting around 60°, which is pretty much bang on for the time of year, nothing unusual there.
The first real chance of anything worthwhile doesn’t show up until Sunday the 30th of August in the morning. The swell is a tiny 3 ft from the north, with a period of 7 seconds, and the energy is weak (88). The wind is light and cross-offshore though, which means it’ll be clean. The guide says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” – and I’d agree. It’s not going to be anything to write home about, but if you’re desperate for a paddle, it’s the first glimmer of hope.
After that, we get a few more clean windows with light offshore winds on Monday 31st August morning (3 ft, NNE, 7s, 94 energy) and Wednesday 2nd September morning (3 ft, NNE, 8s, 89 energy). Both are listed as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions”. The energy is weak, and the swell is small, but the wind is good. For a beginner-level reef, these will be the most user-friendly sessions in the whole period.
The best bet, if you can call it that, is Tuesday 1st September. The morning shows a 4 ft swell from the north-northeast with a 9-second period, and the energy jumps up to 248 (moderate). The wind is light cross-shore, so it’s not perfect, but it’s the biggest and most energetic surf we see. The afternoon has the same size and period, with a light onshore breeze. It’s still not a standout, but if you’re comparing the whole 16 days, that Tuesday is the pick of a very poor bunch.
Honestly, there’s no big swell, no long-period groundswell, and no real quality in the whole window. The breaks are inconsistent, and the forecasts are poor. It’s just one of those runs. Sometimes it’s like this. The ocean will turn around eventually, but for now, keep the board in the van and watch the forecast.
