The Lowdown
Alright, listen up, let's talk about what's cookin' for the next couple of weeks.
Look, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it—this is a lean patch. The only break that's even worth a mention is Redcar Scars, and it's a fickle little reef that's inconsistent and only really gets going with a NNE swell. The water's at 61°F, which is about what you'd expect for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Thursday, August 20th and Friday, August 21st are a total loss. We've got a moderate cross-onshore breeze messing things up, and the swell energy is weak to moderate (163) but it's just a choppy mess. Don't bother.
Saturday, August 22nd is your first real chance. The morning has a light cross-shore breeze with a 6ft swell from the NNE, an 8-second period, and moderate energy (402). The tide might be a bit funny, but it's the best we've seen. The afternoon goes glassy with a light onshore breeze, which is a huge plus. This is the one to target, but keep your expectations in check.
Sunday, August 23rd morning is clean with a 3ft NNE swell and a light cross-offshore breeze. The energy is weak (147), and it's just ordinary. The afternoon gets choppy again.
From Monday, August 24th through to Wednesday, August 27th, it's mostly poor with tiny, weak swells and choppy or cross-shore winds. The only bright spot is Thursday, August 27th afternoon, where we get a clean offshore breeze from the SW and a tiny 3ft NE swell. It's surfable, but nothing special.
Friday, August 28th is another small highlight. The morning is clean with a 4ft NE swell, a 9-second period, and moderate energy (210). The afternoon goes glassy with a 3ft NE swell. It's not big, but it's clean, and around here that's a win.
After that, from Saturday, August 29th right through to Friday, September 4th, it's a long stretch of poor conditions. The swell kicks up a bit on Sunday, August 30th with a 5ft north swell and moderate energy (483), but the onshore wind ruins it. The rest is just lumpy, choppy, and cross-onshore. The very end of the period, Thursday, September 3rd and Friday, September 4th, goes flat and clean, but there's no swell to ride.
So, if you're itching to get wet, aim for Saturday, August 22nd afternoon for the cleanest conditions, and Friday, August 28th for the best combo of clean water and a bit of push. It's slim pickings, but that's the story.
