The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you, it’s a bit of a grim stretch.
For the whole 16-day window, there’s really nothing that gets the blood pumping. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with barely a wave worth paddling for. The first few days are a write-off, and honestly, the only faint glimmer of something happens right at the end of the month, but it’s nothing special.
Kicking off on Thursday the 16th, it’s flat and messy. Redcar Scars (a reef setup that’s inconsistent and beginner-friendly) sees a tiny 1ft swell from the NNE with a short, weak 6-second period. The combined wave energy is next to nothing (13), and a cross-onshore breeze is ruining any chance of it cleaning up. The water temp is sitting at 59°, which is about average for the time of year.
Friday the 17th is more of the same – a bit of bump but no quality. Saturday the 18th sees the swell bump up to 6ft from the NNE, but it’s accompanied by a 19 mph cross-onshore wind. The energy picks up (330), but the conditions are lumpy and horrible. That kind of size with that wind is just a messy, blown-out affair. It’s too big for beginners and not clean enough for anyone else.
Sunday the 19th is the biggest of the lot, with a 7ft NNE swell at a 9-second period, giving a strong 804 combined energy. But again, the wind is cross-onshore and moderate. The afternoon sees the breeze swing ENE and drop to 6 mph, going onshore, making it a “marginal” call at best. That 7ft is really only for the brave, and with the onshore wind, it’s a mess.
From Monday the 20th, it drops away quickly. Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd have tiny, weak swell. Wednesday morning is glassy, but with a 2ft, 7-second swell, there’s just no power.
We then hit a long, dead patch. From the 23rd of July right through to the morning of Sunday the 26th, there’s nothing doing – tiny, short-period slop with no energy. A proper gap.
Sunday the 26th morning is the only little whisper of hope. We get 4ft from the north at a 6-second period, so still short-period, but the wind goes light WNW cross-offshore and the conditions are described as clean. The energy is still weak (89). It’s surfable but very ordinary. That’s the best on offer, but that ain't saying much.
Monday the 27th morning has a clean 2ft with a light offshore from the SW, but it’s tiny. Tuesday the 28th sees a clean 2ft swell with a moderate WSW offshore – clean lines but no size. Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th are back to glassy mornings but with barely a ripple.
Standout pick? There isn’t one. If you absolutely had to get wet, the cleanest windows are the morning of Sunday the 26th for the most size, or Tuesday the 28th for the cleanest conditions from the offshore wind. But don’t expect a wave to write home about. For most, this is a good time to wax the board and wait.
Rusty.
