The Lowdown

Gutted, honestly. I’ve been staring at the charts for the next couple of weeks and it’s a pretty bleak picture for Punta Santa Rosalillita (The Wall). We’ve got a solid stretch of nothing but tiny, chopped-up slop heading our way. The swell energy is weak, barely registering most days—we’re talking values like 85, 89, and 97, and that’s about as good as it gets for a while. That’s some seriously anemic energy, and it’s showing in the wave heights.

The water temp here is running about average for this time of year, so you won’t need a thicker suit just yet, but that’s the only thing that’s normal.

From Thursday the 6th right through the following week, it’s basically the same story. We’ve got these weak 0.7ft to 1ft pulses out of the southwest, but they’re coming in with cross and cross-onshore winds, so the surface is just messy. The mornings tease you with light winds, but it’s still cross-on, and the afternoons get bumped up to a moderate cross-shore chop. It’s not surfable, it’s just... wet. The period is around 13-18 seconds, which tells you there’s some groundswell in the mix, but it’s just not got the size to do anything with it.

The 11th and 12th see the energy pick up slightly—moderate readings like 142 and 157—but the waves still top out at 1ft. It’s more movement, but the quality is still poor. You’re going to be doing more bobbing than riding. This looks more interesting for a kite than a paddle board, to be honest.

We won’t see any real change until the very end of the window, around the 18th and 19th. The direction swings around to the WNW and the period drops right off, which is a different kind of animal. That’s short-period windswell, and while the heights do come up a touch—we’re looking at 3ft to 3ft—the energy is still not great, and honestly, with that short period and a cross-onshore wind, it’s still going to be pretty average. The 20th has the biggest reading on the board at 182, but that’s still a moderate energy, and the swell is junky.

There isn’t a single standout day in this whole 16-day stretch. The best you could hope for is to find a little corner that’s not as torn up by the wind, and maybe get a grovelly 1ft wave on the inside. But it’s a scratchy, frustrating week and a half. The long-range stuff into the 19th and 20th is promising in size, but the quality is going to be poor with that short period. We’re just going to have to wait for the ocean to sort itself out.

That’s the long and short of it. We’ll be watching.
