The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here again. Look, this 16-day window for Praia do Peixe is a flat-out dud. No days get the green light. The swell’s tiny, the wind’s always got that cross or cross-on chop on it, and the energy numbers are all weak—mostly in the double digits, like 29, 82, 56, only briefly touching the low 100s. It’s a proper drought, and for this spot, that’s not unheard of, but it doesn’t make it easier.

Starting Monday, August 3rd, it’s 0.4m from the WNW at 9 seconds, with a cross-on breeze. Messy. That afternoon it’s 0.7m but the wind’s on it again. Tuesday the 4th, same story—0.6m, no push. Wednesday the 5th, the swell drops to 0.5m, wind goes cross-shore from the north at 20 km/h. It’s grovelly, short period.

Thursday and Friday, the 6th and 7th, the wind picks up to 30 km/h from the north. Swell’s down to 0.3m. It’s just lumpy junk. The energy is in the teens. Dead.

The weekend—August 8th and 9th—isn’t any better. Saturday has 0.2m to 0.3m. Sunday bumps to 0.5m but the period drops to 7 seconds and it’s crossed-up.

The first full week of August is a wash. From the 10th to the 16th, swell heights are mostly 0.1m to 0.4m. There’s a brief bump on the 13th—0.8m from the NNW at a weak 6-second period. Still not enough. Energy gets to 90, but that short period makes it slop.

The second week, starting August 17th, doesn’t change. Swell’s back to 0.1m, but the period’s long—15 to 17 seconds. It’s a tease with no height. Winds stay cross. The last bit, Tuesday the 18th afternoon, is 0.1m with a 14-second period and a fresh cross-onshore at 30 km/h. It’s just chop.

Water temp is about 68°, which is normal for this time of year—anomaly is -0.3°. Nothing weird there.

This break is sheltered, and the swell direction is all wrong—it wants SW, and we’re getting WNW and NNW. Plus, nothing ever gets over 3 feet. It’s not a beginner wave, it’s not an expert wave, it’s just not a wave.

For a kiter, some of those cross-shore days with the chop might be alright. But for surfing? Lock the boards away. It’ll come back around eventually, but not in this forecast.

Rusty.
