The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this outlook for Praia da Rocha is a grim one right now.
We’re looking at a long, empty run of flat, poor surf stretching from now, through the end of July, and well into the start of August. There’s a stretch from Friday the 24th of July all the way until the afternoon of the 5th of August where there is literally no surf on offer. The combined energy of any swells directed here is zero (0) for that entire period. The water is running much colder than normal for the time of year at 65°F.
From the 24th right through to the 4th of August, the script is the same – no swell, poor surf conditions. You’ll see some light glassy mornings like on the 28th and 29th of July, and the 2nd of August, but there’s nothing to ride. The wind swings around from offshore to cross-off, but it doesn’t matter because there’s no wave energy. A couple of afternoons show moderate to fresh breezes, but again, flat.
Finally, on the morning of Wednesday the 5th of August, we see a tiny pulse of life – a 0.3ft swell from the south with a 12-second period. The combined energy is just 3, so we’re talking about something barely rideable, if at all. That swell direction is from the south, not the optimum SW for this spot, and the winds are light offshore in the morning, which would at least keep the surface clean. The afternoon picks up a little more wind but the swell stays at 0.3ft. The next day, Thursday the 6th of August, there’s a 2ft, short-period (4 seconds) windswell from the west in the afternoon, with energy up to 9 – still not enough to get excited about, especially with a fresh breeze.
The Best (such as it is) – If you are desperate, the morning of the 5th of August offers the only real window. The south swell is tiny and weak, but those light offshore NNW winds at 6 mph will keep it clean. It’s beginner-level stuff, so don’t expect any power or shape. For a more experienced surfer, there is nothing on the table worth paddling out for within this forecast.
Honestly, this is a blank run for the area. It happens. Keep an eye on the charts – these flat spells don’t last forever.
