The Lowdown

Alright, let’s be real with you. I’ve been staring at the charts for Praia da Rocha and, honestly, it’s a tough stretch. The next 16 days are looking pretty grim for a decent paddle. There’s a big fat zero on the energy scale for most of the run. The water is sitting at 65° – that’s 5° colder than normal for this time of year, so it’s gonna feel a bit nippy on the skin.

The first real whisper of anything happens right at the end of the run. From now until early August, it’s just flat and poor. You’re looking at a solid gap of nearly two weeks with nothing worth paddling out for. The wind is all over the place – mostly cross-off or glassy, but there’s no swell to work with.

On Monday the 27th of July, the afternoon finally shows a tiny pulse: a 2ft SE swell with a short period of 6 seconds. That’s weak sauce, with combined energy of only 27 (weak). It’s also a straight onshore wind, so it’s gonna be messy. Not worth the drive.

Then on Friday the 31st of July, the afternoon brings another 2ft ESE swell, but again only 6 seconds of period and a weak 21 energy. The wind is a light cross-onshore, so it’s not even clean.

Honestly, the only flicker of hope is way out on Thursday the 6th of August. We get a tiny 0.3ft southerly swell, but check this – the period is 12 seconds! That’s a proper groundswell, just barely filling in. The energy is a measly 3 (very weak), but the wind is light and cross-off in the morning, so it could be glassy. The afternoon picks up a moderate breeze, so the morning is your only shot. Even then, it’s for experts only looking for a thigh-high glide.

The break is rated for beginners and is inconsistent, and it’s fairly exposed to the SW. With the swell direction coming from the SE and S, it’s not matching the optimum. For a spot that rarely breaks, this is a pretty blank run. It’s normal for this area to have quiet spells, but this one is a stinker. If you’re a kiter, the windier afternoons with some cross-off breeze might be more interesting than anything for a surfboard.

Rusty.
