Praia Pequena Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, grab your board and let’s talk about the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a slow burner for Praia Pequena, a fairly consistent little beach break that needs the right conditions to really light up. Right now, it’s not looking like a classic run, but there’s a real gem hiding in the second week if you’re willing to wait.

The first stretch is a write-off, unfortunately. From Tuesday the 4th all the way through to the 13th, it’s a battle. We’ve got onshore and cross-onshore winds from the north and northwest most days, and the swell is small and junky. The energy is weak, sitting in the low hundreds, with waves mostly around 1ft to 6ft. The period is short, around 6 to 8 seconds, which just means messy, crumbly lines with no push. The water is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, about 67°F, which is a degree off the average – you’ll feel that in a thicker wetsuit. There’s no point even looking at it until the wind swings around.

Things only start to change on Friday the 14th. The swell bumps up to 7ft from the NNW with a period of 8 seconds, but the wind is still all over it – cross-onshore, making it lumpy and poor. The energy jumps to 539, a real push of water, but it’s not clean. That day and Saturday the 15th are still frustrating. The morning of the 15th is the first real light in the tunnel. The wind goes light and cross-offshore from the south, the ocean cleans up, and you’ve got 7ft of NNW swell. It’s bigger, but the period is still short, so it’s going to be a bit walled. Still, it’s the first time you can actually surf without getting blown off your board.

But the standout, the one I’m genuinely excited about, is Monday morning, August 17th. This is the pick of the entire forecast. The swell is still solid at 8ft from the NNW, and the period has stretched to 8 seconds. The real kicker is the wind: a light cross-offshore breeze from the SSW. The conditions are forecast to be clean, and the energy is strong at 632. This is the day you want to be out there. It’s got size and shape.

The window doesn’t last long. The afternoon of the 17th turns cross-shore and messy. The 18th has more size but the wind is onshore again, spoiling it. And by the 19th, the swell is still big, but the northwesterly wind is howling, making it a complete mess. At nearly 7ft with a cross-onshore wind, Praia Pequena is going to be a washing machine. It might be more interesting for the kite surfers than us paddle surfers.

So, the plan is simple: keep your eyes on the morning of Monday the 17th. That’s your window. The forecast is a bit far out, so treat it as promising but not set in stone. The good news is, the swell is coming, and with the right wind, this place will fire. It tends not to stay this poor for long.
