The Lowdown

Alright, I’ll be honest with ya, it’s a pretty flat and grim run ahead for Poris de Abona. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak swell and onshore winds that just won’t give it a rest.

The water’s sitting at 74°F right now, which is about average for this time of year, so nothin’ to write home about there.

From the get-go, Thursday the 6th through to the end of the first week, it’s all poor surf conditions. The swell is barely a ripple—mostly 0.7ft from the SSW with periods around 11 to 13 seconds, so there’s some long-period groundswell in the mix, but the energy is pathetic. The combined energy is in the low double digits (22 to 29), just weak, and we’ve got a strong onshore wind (18-25 mph) from the NE. That’s a hard no.

There’s a little blip on Sunday the 9th afternoon where the swell bumps up to 4ft, but it’s a short-period 4-second windswell from the NE and the wind is cross-onshore at 18 mph. The energy hits 76—still weak—and it’s lumpy and messy. Not worth paddlin’ out for.

The whole first week is a write-off. We’re looking at a gap of several days with no real surf to recommend.

Moving into the second week, things don’t get much better. Swell heights stay tiny, mostly 0.3ft to 0.7ft, with occasional 1ft on the 16th. The energy finally starts to creep up—by the 16th of August morning we see 104 (moderate) and by the 17th it’s 190 (still moderate), but it’s all onshore NE wind or cross-onshore. The swell direction shifts to SSW, and the period gets back up to 15-16 seconds, which would be beautiful groundswell if the wind was right, but it’s not. The break is inconsistent anyway, and the crowds are only sometimes an issue, but there’s no quality to fight over.

The best of a bad bunch looks like the 21st of August morning. Swell hits 3ft from the SSW with a 15-second period, combined energy of 288 (moderate), and the wind is light onshore from the NE at 9 mph. That’s about as clean as it gets in this forecast, but 3ft is still pretty small for an intermediate spot, and it’s not gonna be a standout. The swell direction (SSW) is not what the spot really wants—it prefers NE—so the waves will be weak and wobbly.

Honestly, mate, this is a stretch where you’re better off doing something else. There’s no proper swell, the wind is mostly rubbish, and Poris is inconsistent at the best of times. It’s not gonna stay this poor forever, but for now, don’t hold your breath.

Rusty.
