The Lowdown

Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for the Canary Islands.

Honestly, I’m looking at the next 16 days and it’s a tough run. Poris de Abona (Playa Grande) is the only game in town according to the charts, and it’s not saying much. We’re staring down a long stretch of poor surf conditions, so don’t be expecting any classic sessions.

The first week is a total write-off. From Friday the 7th right through to Sunday the 16th of August, it’s all onshore, mostly from the NE, and the swell is tiny. You’ll see days with 0.7 ft to 4 ft, but the wind is blowing straight onshore or cross-on, making it bumpy and messy. The combined wave energy is weak, mostly sitting between 6 and 138, which is nothing to write home about. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The only faint glimmer of hope creeps in from Monday the 17th of August. A small, long-period SSW groundswell starts to show up. We’re talking 2 ft to 3 ft at 15 to 16 seconds, which is a very long period for a beach break like this. That longer period will bring some energy and shape, but it’s still a tiny wave. The combined energy climbs from 159 to 292 over the following days, so it’s got some moderate push behind it. The problem is, the wind is still onshore from the NE through the 18th, and then goes cross-onshore from the 19th into the 22nd. It’s not going to be clean, but it’s the only thing moving.

The standout here is the morning of the 19th of August. The wind drops to a moderate 12 mph from the NE, which is still onshore, but it’s the lightest wind we get against the best swell energy. The wave is 2 ft, period 15 seconds, and the combined energy hits 228. It’s not going to be epic, but it’s the most surfable moment in the whole window. Don’t expect perfection, and the crowds can show up sometimes, even when it’s small.

The last few days, the 20th, 21st, and 22nd, see the swell hanging in there, but the wind stays cross-onshore, keeping things choppy. It’s still not great.

So, bottom line: there’s no real classic surf on the cards. If you’re desperate, the mornings of the 19th, 20th, and 21st offer the best chance to get wet, but keep your expectations low. This is a blank run for the area.

Rusty.
