The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s look at what’s coming up for North Point over the next couple of weeks.
The pattern is a rough start with a lot of onshore wind and big, messy swell. Later on, we get a clean-up with proper offshore winds and that SW groundswell lining up nicely. The water’s sitting at 67°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
From Thursday the 16th, it’s a no-go. We’ve got 10ft of WSW swell but that cross-on wind is making a mess of things. The combined swell energy is pumping at 3611 (moderate to strong), but with those conditions, you’re just watching bump from the carpark. This carries on through Friday and into Saturday the 18th, where it gets proper big with 18ft of WSW swell and strong onshore winds – that’s 9911 energy units (very strong). That’s expert-only territory, and even then, the quality is poor. Sunday morning is not much better with 12ft and onshore wind.
We start to see a change late Sunday afternoon, with a small drop to 10ft and a lighter cross-on breeze. It’s still a bit lumpy, but the energy is still solid at 3018. Monday the 20th is still marginal, with cross-shore wind and 8ft swell.
The real window opens on Wednesday the 22nd. By the afternoon, we get a cross-offshore wind from the SE, 12ft of SW swell with a period of 14 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The energy is 4803 (strong), and the wind is clean. That’s your first standout. It’s not perfect, but it’s a big step up.
Thursday the 23rd is a gem. Morning has some clouds but a light cross-off, 10ft SW swell. But the real highlight is Thursday afternoon – clean offshore wind from the E at 12 mph, 8ft of SW swell, period 13 seconds. The energy is 2187 (moderate). This is the best of the run for an experienced surfer: clean, offshore, solid groundswell.
Friday the 24th holds onto that quality with offshore wind and 6ft swell, and Saturday the 25th is fantastic for a smaller board with 5ft to 6ft, glassy conditions, and that SW groundswell wrapping in. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so keep an eye out.
From the 26th, the wind stays clean but the swell drops in and out. The 26th afternoon has a nice 7ft SW swell and clean cross-off, worth a paddle. The 27th is clean but the energy is moderate. By the 28th, we lose the offshore wind and it gets lumpy again, and the final few days of the month are a write-off with strong onshore winds and big, messy swell – over 13ft and energy readings over 12000 (very strong) on the 31st.
So, for the standout: Thursday 23rd afternoon and Saturday 25th. Thursday gives you 8ft of SW groundswell with clean offshore wind – classic North Point. Saturday is smaller but glassy and clean, perfect for a longer session.
There’s a quiet period at the start and a messy finish, but the middle of the run has some proper moments.
Rusty.
