The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' over the next couple of weeks at North Point. We've got a wild ride ahead, but you gotta be patient and pick your moments.

The first few days are a write-off, to be honest. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are a mess—cross-onshore wind and lumpy, choppy conditions. The swell is there, around 8ft to 10ft from the SW, but it's just not worth paddling out for. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 66°, but that's about the only nice thing. Tuesday the 25th is even worse with fresh, strong winds, so forget about it.

We finally get a glimmer of hope on Wednesday the 26th. The swell jumps to a solid 16ft from the WSW, but the real story is the period. It's hitting 18 seconds in the morning—that's proper, long-period groundswell. The combined energy is massive (15320), so there's a heap of power. But the wind is a light cross-shore, leaving it with a slight chop. It's still a challenging wave; at 16ft, this is only for the experienced crew. It's a standout for the sheer size and energy, but you need to know what you're doing.

Thursday the 27th is a step down in quality, with a fresh cross-shore wind making it lumpy again. Swell drops to 12ft, but the conditions are messy.

Now, listen up. The real gem in this forecast is Saturday the 29th, during the morning. We've got a clean 6ft swell from the SW with a 16-second period—that's a beautiful, long-period groundswell. The wind is light offshore from the ENE, which is exactly what this point break needs. It'll be glassy and clean. The combined energy is still strong (3561), but the size is much more manageable. This is your window for a really good session. Just be aware it's a fairly consistent spot, but crowds are possible, especially on a weekend.

Sunday the 30th morning also looks promising, with a 10ft WSW swell and a 16-second period, with a light cross-offshore breeze. It'll be clean again, but a bit bigger. Another solid option.

After that, the second week is a mixed bag. The beginning of September is plagued by onshore winds again, with a strong breeze on Wednesday the 2nd making it a complete mess. The swell stays in the 7ft to 10ft range, but the wind is just not our friend.

The next true standout is Friday the 4th of September. The morning looks incredible: a 13ft swell from the WSW with a 12-second period, but here's the kicker—a light offshore wind from the N. It'll be clean, and the combined energy is pumping (5031). This is a big wave, definitely expert territory, but if you're up for it, that's your call. The afternoon gets even bigger, 15ft with a 16-second period, but the wind switches onshore, which is a shame.

The real monster comes on Monday the 7th of September. We're looking at a 21ft swell from the WSW with a 20-second period—that's a very long period, massive groundswell. The combined energy is off the charts (29861). The wind is light offshore from the E, so it would be clean. But honestly, this is predicted to be too big for the break. It's a warning: for the experts only, and even then, it's a serious call. The afternoon is similar at 20ft.

So, my pick of the entire forecast? Saturday the 29th of August, morning session. That 6ft, 16-second SW groundswell with the light offshore ENE wind is the perfect combo for a long, clean day at North Point. It's not too big, plenty of energy, and the wind is your best friend. The runner-up is Friday the 4th of September morning if you're after a bigger, more powerful challenge.

This is Rusty, signing off.
