The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s look at what’s cookin’.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a solid run of swell on the cards for North Point, but the wind is going to be a real pain for the first week. We’re looking at a solid, long-period groundswell lining up from the SW, but a stubborn cross-onshore wind is going to leave it choppy and lumpy for days. The water is sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice little bonus.
The first real chance for a clean wave comes on Friday morning, August 28th. We’ve got clean conditions with a light offshore breeze from the ESE, and the swell is a solid 8ft from the SW, with a good 12-second period. That’s a proper point break wave, but the energy is moderate (1556), so it’s not going to be a monster. Still, it’s the first window of decent shape in a week of onshore junk.
The standout, and I mean the real standout, is Saturday afternoon, August 29th. The wind swings offshore from the N, the sky is clear, and the swell is 8ft from the SW with a 16-second period. That’s a long, clean groundswell with a combined energy of 2905, and it’s going to be pure. Clean waves, no chop, and plenty of push. North Point (North-Point) is a point break, so that long period will wrap in beautifully. Crowds are sometimes a problem here, so get out there early.
We do have a massive pulse of energy coming through on Wednesday, August 26th, with an 18ft swell from the WSW and an 18-second period. That’s over 18,000 in energy, but the wind is howling onshore and it’s raining. That’s a kite surfer’s dream, not a paddle surfer’s. Stay out of the water that day unless you’re an absolute expert.
Looking further out, the week of September 1st is still tricky. The mornings are clean, but the conditions are only marginal. The real fire lights up again on Friday, September 4th. We’ve got a glassy morning with an 12ft SW swell, 16-second period, and 6072 energy. That’s a solid, clean, long-period point wave with no wind. Then Saturday, September 5th, is the absolute gem of the whole forecast. The morning is clean with an 12ft WSW swell and a moderate offshore breeze. The afternoon? 16ft from the WSW, 16-second period, 12448 energy, and glassy conditions. That’s exceptional, expert-level surf. If you can handle it, that’s the session to circle.
That’s the long and short of it. There’s a week of waiting for the wind to play nice, but when it does, the payoff is real.
Rusty.
