The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about North Point. There’s some junk to wade through in the first couple of days, but after that, the energy builds in a big way. It’s a point break, so it knows how to handle the heavy stuff, but the wind’s going to be a problem early on.
Water temp is pretty normal for this time of year.
Monday the 24th is a total dud. A 10-foot WSW swell, but with a 15 km/h NW cross wind, it’s just slop. The wave energy is strong (2820), but the quality is poor. Tuesday is even worse, with 40 km/h winds making a mess. Wednesday the 26th sees the swell jump to 16 feet (15493 energy), but it’s onshore and choppy—only for the hardcore.
Thursday the 27th stays ugly with 13-foot waves and a cross-onshore breeze.
Then comes Friday morning, the 28th, and that’s our first real winner. The swell drops to a clean 7 feet from the SW, but the wind is glassy, dead calm at 5 km/h from the SSE. It’s a long period, 12-second swell coming right into the point, so those waves will have real shape and power. The energy is moderate (1468), but the conditions are perfect. This is one for the experienced crew.
Saturday the 29th gets really good by afternoon. We’ve got a 10-foot SW groundswell, 17-second period, with a clean cross-offshore breeze. The wave energy is high (5634), and the wind is light. This is the other standout in the first week. It’s bigger, more powerful, so experts only. Crowds are possible, but it’ll be worth it.
Sunday and Monday (30th & 31st) keep the 8 to 10-foot swells coming with clean cross-offshore winds. Good fun.
A bit of a dip on the 2nd and 3rd of September with onshore winds. The 4th of September afternoon brings a big 16-foot SW swell (11426 energy) but it’s choppy.
Now for the long-range standout: Monday morning, 7th of September. This is it. We’ve got an 18-foot WSW swell, 14-second period, massive wave energy (11195), and a light 15 km/h easterly wind, cross-offshore and clean. The conditions are exceptional for experts. It’s a week out, so a little uncertain, but if it holds, North Point is going to be absolutely pumping. This is big, powerful groundswell, perfect for the point. Only the experts need apply. Tuesday the 8th cleans up too, with an 12-foot SW swell and light offshore wind.
Best bets are Friday the 28th for that glassy session, and that big Monday the 7th for the heavy stuff. The first few days are a wash, but it gets good.
Stay frosty.
