The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s going on at North Point.
Alright, the outlook for North Point is a bit of a mixed bag, but there are some serious standouts if you know when to paddle out. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, coming in at 67°, so that’s a nice bonus for the hands and feet.
The first real window of quality kicks off on Wednesday, 22nd July. The whole morning is looking clean, with a light cross-offshore breeze from the ESE. The swell is solid 10ft from the SW, and the energy is pumping hard with a combined energy of 4053. That’s some serious grunt. The afternoon turns it up a notch, with the swell jumping to 12ft from the SW and a very long period of 15 seconds, giving it that real groundswell push. The energy is even higher at 4491. This is heavy, clean, and for experienced surfers only. At over 8ft, this is strictly for the experts.
Thursday, 23rd July is another beauty. The morning serves up clean 8ft SW swell with a gentle offshore breeze from the NE. The afternoon is the real highlight though, with the wind going glassy from the north at just 3 mph. That’s about as clean as it gets. The swell drops a touch to 7ft from the SW, but with a 13-second period, it’s still got plenty of shape. For a point break like North Point, that kind of long-period groundswell is ideal.
We do hit a rough patch from Saturday, 25th July through to Monday, 27th July. The wind cranks up, some rain moves in, and the conditions get messy. The swell stays big, over 10ft, but with strong onshore winds, it’s blown out. It’s a write-off for paddle surfing.
Things clean up again on Tuesday, 28th July with a moderate offshore breeze from the east and about 8ft of SW swell. That pattern holds through to Thursday, 30th July, which gives us a solid run of clean, offshore conditions. The swell dips a bit, but it’s still quality.
Now, the real monster is lurking for Friday, 31st July. The afternoon is something else: 21ft from the WSW with a combined energy of 11741. The wind is offshore from the NE. That is massive, dangerous, and exceptional for expert surfers only. If you’re not on a gun and you don’t know what you’re doing, stay out of the water.
Then, Saturday, 1st August is just insane. The swell is predicted at 26ft from the WSW with a very long period of 17 to 18 seconds. The energy readings are astronomical, hitting 35783 in the morning and 40719 in the afternoon. The wind is clean and cross-offshore, but honestly, the swell is too big, even for North Point. That’s a day for watching from the cliff, not paddling out.
The first week of August sees the swell settle back to a still-heavy 13ft to 15ft range, but the wind is a bit more variable, so you’ll need to pick your session.
The best on offer? Wednesday morning 22nd July and Thursday afternoon 23rd July are your standouts. The Wednesday has the power, the Thursday has the glassy perfection. Don’t sleep on them.
Rusty.
