The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Mother Nature's got cookin' for North Point over the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, so pay attention.
We’ve got a solid start today, Tuesday the 14th. North Point is pumping with a clean 10 ft southwest groundswell. The wind is light and offshore out of the northeast, keeping it glassy. This is proper surf for experienced surfers only. The water is sitting at 66°, which is about average for this time of year. The energy in the water is strong, coming in at (3326), so there’s plenty of push. This is the standout session of the whole outlook, so if you’ve got the skills, get out there today.
Don’t get too excited about Wednesday the 15th. The swell sticks around but the wind howls out of the north at 22-25 mph making it a cross-offshore mess. The surf quality drops right off, so give it a miss.
Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th are blown out by onshore winds and the swell gets a bit jumbled. Saturday the 18th sees a huge pulse of swell – we’re talking 16-18 ft from the southwest, with wave energy skyrocketing (10187 to 11614) – but it’s accompanied by a howling onshore wind. This is dangerous, unsurfable chaos and strictly for the kites if anything.
The whole of the following week, from the 19th to the 25th, is a write-off. The wind is mostly onshore or strong cross-shore, and the surf quality is poor to marginal. Save your energy.
Now, hang in there because things turn around big time. Wednesday the 22nd of July is a gem. The onshore wind finally dies, and we get a glassy morning with a 10 ft southwest groundswell. By the afternoon it turns dead glassy – a 10 ft southwest groundswell with not a breath of wind. The energy is still strong (3518) and the conditions will be absolutely pristine for experienced surfers.
The run of clean conditions continues through Thursday the 23rd and the 27th and 28th, with clean 3 ft to 5 ft southwest swells and light offshore or cross-off winds. These are great for a longboard or a funboard.
But hold on to your boardies. The real highlight of the long-range is Wednesday the 29th of July. We’re seeing a 13 ft west swell with a clean 12-second period and offshore wind. The energy is absolutely massive at (8415). The afternoon following that has an 8 ft southwest groundswell with an 18-second period and light winds. These are exceptional waves for experienced and expert surfers, but it’s a long way off, so keep an eye on it.
So, to sum it up: Today is the day for the experienced crew. Then we have a long, ugly gap of onshore wind until the 22nd, which is another cracker. And if you’re feeling patient, the end of the month looks like it could be one for the books.
Stay stoked, catch you in the water.
Rusty.
