The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, lookin’ at the ole North Point window. We’ve got a solid run of south-west groundswell comin’ through, but man, the wind is gonna be a fight for most of it. The first couple of days, Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd, are a write-off – strong cross-onshore winds are choppin’ up a solid 8ft to 10ft, 16-second period swell. The combined energy is huge, with readings around 3953 to 3481, but it’s messy. You’re better off doin’ something else.
The first real glimmer comes Monday the 24th, early. That morning, a light northerly cross-offshore breeze cleans up a 10ft, 13-second swell from the WSW. That’s a proper session for experienced surfers only – the wave energy is 2820, and it’s clean. The afternoon turns sour again though. The next standout is Friday the 28th. The morning is a beauty – a light offshore breeze from the NE, 8ft of 12-second, clean swell from the SW. The combined energy is 1552, and it’s labelled as excellent for experienced surfers. That’s the pick of the first week.
The long weekend, Saturday the 30th and Sunday the 31st, has some serious energy. Saturday morning sees an 8ft, 16-second swell from the WSW with a 3691 reading, and it’s clean with a cross-offshore breeze, but the wind is fresh at 22 mph. Sunday the 31st afternoon is a real gift – glassy conditions, 3 mph wind from the west, with an 8ft, 17-second groundswell from the WSW. The energy is 3890, and it’s described as excellent. That’s a rare, perfect window.
Water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing wild. Keep in mind North Point is a point break, so that long-period groundswell (over 15 seconds) will be lined up nicely, but it can get a bit too straight for some. The crowds are sometimes there, so you might have a few out. The best of the whole run, without a doubt, is Monday the 31st afternoon – glassy, solid, clean. Don’t miss it.
Rusty.
