The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for North Point over this long stretch.

We’ve got a run of solid SW groundswell on the cards, and the water’s sitting at a touch warmer than normal – about 66° – so that’s a nice little bonus for your skin. But we gotta wade through a few rough days before we get to the gems.

First up, starting this Wednesday morning, the 19th of August, we’re on. It’s big, it’s angry, but it’s a little messy. Swell’s pumping at 15 ft from the WSW, period a fat 15 seconds, so there’s heaps of energy under the hood (8648 combined). But the wind’s on it, SW at 9 mph. This is expert territory only – 15 ft is no joke. Thursday stays solid but cross-onshore keeps it choppy.

Friday the 21st though... that morning is where it’s at. Glassy conditions – wind is dead calm, 0 mph. Swell’s still a solid 12 ft from the WSW, period dropping a touch to 14 seconds, but it’s clean, powerful, and lined up. The energy’s still ripping (5097). North Point is a point break, so that long-period SW groundswell will wrap in beautifully. This is the standout of the first week.

Saturday and Sunday slip back into cross-onshore winds and choppy seas – not worth paddling out for.

But then Monday the 24th morning – that’s a sleeper. Clean conditions with a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNE at 6 mph. Swell’s down to 8 ft from the SW, period 13 seconds. Still solid for advanced surfers, but way more manageable than the 15 ft stuff. A good clean session.

Now we hit a lull. Tuesday the 25th is a write-off – onshore winds and rain. Hold tight.

Wednesday the 26th morning – back to big swell, 15 ft from the WSW, period 16 seconds, and the combined energy is a beast at 10841. But the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s lumpy and choppy. Only for the experienced who don’t mind a wrestle.

Thursday the 27th morning – now we’re talking. Clean again, offshore breeze from the ESE at 9 mph, swell at 12 ft from the SW, period 14 seconds. Energy still huge (8980). This is a proper session – clean, strong, and that offshore wind will hold the face open for ya.

Friday the 28th morning – another beauty. Offshore wind from the ENE at 12 mph, swell at 7 ft from the SSW, period 13 seconds. Clean lines, manageable size for strong intermediates up to experts. This is the second standout session. Afternoon gets a little smaller but stays clean.

Saturday the 29th afternoon – clean again, light cross-offshore, 6 ft swell from the WSW with a 16-second period. Smaller but clean and fun. The 30th of August (Sunday) afternoon is also worth a mention: 10 ft from the WSW, period 18 seconds, and clean with a cross-offshore breeze. That long period (18 seconds!) means really long lines at the point – but be ready for bigger gaps between sets.

Into the start of September, the 2nd (Wednesday) morning – clean again with a cross-offshore SE breeze, 10 ft from the WSW, period 15 seconds. Solid session.

The 3rd of September Thursday – we finish on a big, choppy note. 15 ft swell, cross-onshore wind. Only for the die-hard crew.

Overall, Friday the 21st morning is the absolute pick for clean power. Monday the 24th morning and Friday the 28th morning are the other two clean standouts for size and quality. Everything else is either too big and messy or too small.

Keep your eyes peeled – forecasts can shift, but this is a solid run of SW groundswell. North Point will be working.

Rusty.
