The Lowdown
Alright, let's get this sorted. Rusty here.
First up, we’re looking at North Point. It’s an advanced point break that’s fairly consistent and exposed to the swell, working best when the swell is coming from the southwest. The water temp is sitting at 66°F, which is a touch above the norm for this time of year, so a little warmer than usual.
It’s pretty quiet on the surf front right now. There’s some swell, but it’s messy and the conditions are just not cooperating. The forecast is a bit of a rough ride. Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th you’ve got some solid SW groundswell pushing in, with combined swell energy hitting around 3149 for Wednesday and peaking at 5478 on Thursday morning. The problem is the wind. It’s a strong breeze from the NNE, setting up a cross-offshore wind on Wednesday, so it’s clean but the scores are low due to questionable tide and swell quality. Thursday the wind swings to a light cross-onshore, which is a bit better, but it’s still not firing cleanly.
Friday the 17th and the weekend get a bit rougher. The swell drops slightly but the wind gets ugly – cross-onshore, onshore, and messy. That Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are a real write-off with strong onshores and huge energy (over 9000) but dirty conditions. It looks more like a session for the kite surfers than paddle surfers out there.
After a pretty bleak stretch, there’s a real standout moment. On Friday the 24th of July, things finally click. You’ve got a 10ft SW groundswell, clean, with a gentle cross-offshore breeze from the NNE. The combined energy is a solid 2760, good and powerful. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. The swell period is a nice 14 seconds, so it’s a proper long-period groundswell, which will wrap nicely into the point. It’s rated for experienced surfers, and with crowds only showing up sometimes, you might get some good ones to yourself. The morning and afternoon both look excellent.
The week after that goes a bit flat and messy again, with some small, short-period windswell and poor winds. There might be a few alright waves around the 28th, but it’s nothing to get excited about. Big winds and blown-out conditions dominate.
So, bottom line: sit tight through the garbage and aim for Friday the 24th of July at North Point. That’s your best shot at a proper session in this window.
Rusty.
