The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down. Rusty here, talkin’ about North Point.
We’re in a bit of a lull to start, but the second week is lookin’ like a freight train. The first few days are a struggle with the wind, but there’s a couple of clean windows if you know when to look.
Sunday the 23rd of August starts with a 2.5m SW swell, but that cross-on wind from the SSW at 20 km/h is makin’ it a choppy mess. Not your day. Monday the 24th bumps up to 3.0m from the WSW, but the cross-shore wind keeps it ugly. Tuesday the 25th is a total loss with 35 km/h winds and rain – that 3.5m swell is just junk. Wednesday the 26th is where it gets real. A 5.0m WSW groundswell with a very long period of 18 seconds rolls in, and the wind turns light offshore in the morning. The energy is strong (17783), and it’s clean early. This is strictly for the experts – that’s a heavy wave. The water temp is about normal for this time of year.
Thursday the 27th the swell drops to 4.0m SW, but the wind is a strong, lumpy cross-shore from the SSE. Friday the 28th gives you a small clean window in the morning: 2.3m SW swell with a cross-offshore breeze, but the energy is low (1542). Saturday the 29th morning is a real gem: 1.7m SW swell with a gentle offshore wind from the east. The waves are clean and lined up, with moderate energy (2474). A solid session for experienced surfers. Sunday the 30th morning is the best early option – glassy conditions with a 3.0m WSW groundswell at 16 seconds. The energy is moderate (5286), and it’s a beautiful, clean morning for those who can handle the size.
Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st of September go back to choppy, cross-on junk. The rest of the first week into the second week is a mess of onshore winds and unruly swell.
Now, the real standout. Sunday the 6th of September. An 8.5m WSW groundswell with a very long period of 17 seconds. The energy is massive (38154). The wind is light offshore in the morning. But the forecast says it’s predicted to be too big for this break. This is a monster, only for the most hardcore big-wave guys, and it might be a tow-in situation. Monday the 7th follows with a 6.5m swell, still way too big for a normal paddle.
The best call for a clean, quality session is the morning of Saturday the 29th of August. It’s not the biggest, but the clean offshore wind and solid 1.7m swell will give you the best waves without the chaos. The glassy morning of the 30th of August is a close second for the brave. That 8.5m swell on the 6th of September is a wild card, promising but far out and less certain.
Rusty out.
