Righto, grab a cuppa, 'cause we gotta sift through a fair bit of time here before the magic happens. The truth is, for the next couple of weeks at North Point, we’re really only looking at a few windows of proper surf, and you’ll need to be patient and pick your moments. There’s a lot of junk in between.
Let's start with what’s coming. The big story is a series of solid, long-period SW groundswells – we’re talking periods of 15 to 17 seconds, which is proper groundswell. The energy numbers are massive, up in the 6700 bracket, so there's no shortage of power. But the wind and tide conditions are going to be the gatekeeper here.
The first real chance is next Wednesday morning, July 8th. It’s the standout. We've got a solid 10ft SW swell (17-second period) with glassy conditions. That's a rare combo. The energy hits 5647, so it’ll be a heavy, powerful wave. This is advanced territory, for sure, but for experienced surfers, it’ll be one of the best sessions you'll see. The water temp is 67°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year.
After that, the wind goes onshore and the quality drops hard for a few days. The morning of Sunday, July 12th offers a bit of a reprieve with a smaller 6ft SW swell (12-second period) and a clean cross-off breeze. Not huge, but clean. Then the next proper highlight is Monday, July 13th. The morning sees a 10ft SW swell (16-second period) with offshore winds, and the afternoon goes glassy with a 8ft set. This is another quality period for the experienced crew.
Beyond that, the second week gets messy. The swell continues but the wind turns onshore and stays there for much of the time. There's a window on Saturday, July 18th with a big 16ft WNW pulse, but it’s a short-period 10-second mess with onshore wind. That'll be a washing machine – all power, no shape. It’s really only going to appeal to the kitesurfers in that kind of beach break setup.
So, to sum up: if you're keen and you can handle heavy, powerful surf, circle Wednesday July 8th and Monday July 13th. The rest is a waiting game. The consistent swell energy is there (moderate to very strong), but the wind’s going to make you work for it.
