The Lowdown
Hey folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for North Point.
We’ve got a solid 16-day window ahead, but it’s a real mixed bag. There’s a lot of size on the table, but the wind’s going to be the main character for the first week and a half, making things messy. The water temp is sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. The standout window is looking like the last few days of August and the very start of September, with some proper groundswell potential and cleaner conditions.
The forecast kicks off on Monday the 17th of August with a big dud. A 13ft to 18ft swell from the west is being hit by a howling 28 mph onshore wind, creating poor surf. That strong breeze just ruins it. Tuesday the 18th isn’t much better, with a 15ft to 13ft WSW swell but a stiff cross-onshore wind leaving it choppy.
We scrape into some marginal surf on Wednesday the 19th, with a 13ft to 15ft WSW swell and a helpful offshore wind. It’s still getting a moderate score, so it’s not a write-off for an experienced surfer looking for a paddle, but that combined energy is immense (7469 to 9167) – it’s a lot of power, so be careful. Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st stay in that marginal zone with 10ft to 13ft WSW swell and lighter winds. Saturday the 22nd of August is a real teaser. The morning brings a 10ft SW groundswell with a long 16-second period, and the wind goes completely glassy. That’s *excellent* conditions for experienced surfers. The combined energy is still strong at 4075. This is our first proper highlight – head down for the morning session for clean, lined-up sets.
Sunday the 23rd falls apart again with a fresh 22 mph onshore wind and an 12ft swell. Monday the 24th is cross-shore and lumpy with 15ft swell and fresh winds. Tough go.
Now, the promising bit. Tuesday the 25th of August. The morning sees a clean 8ft SSW swell with a light offshore breeze from the ENE. The afternoon is even better – glassy conditions, a 6ft WSW groundswell with an 18-second period. That's a very long period (3812 combined energy). That’s a quality groundswell, perfect for a point break like North Point. Really excellent.
Wednesday the 26th offers another glassy morning with an 8ft WSW swell. Thursday the 27th is similar, glassy morning, 7ft WSW swell. All of these mornings are clean and well-shaped. Sweet.
Friday the 28th is cleaner again, with a cross-offshore breeze and a 6ft WSW swell.
Now, the biggest push of the window. Saturday the 29th of August. The morning brings a bloody solid 15ft WSW swell with a long 16-second period, and it’s clean with a cross-offshore wind. The combined energy is massive at 10075. That’s huge, powerful, well-shaped swell. This is only for experts – 15ft is way over 8ft, so it’s a heavy, serious day. But for those with the skills, this is the best on offer. The afternoon sees it drop slightly to 12ft and go a bit cross-shore, but still worth a look.
Sunday the 30th goes to hell with strong onshore winds again, and Monday the 31st is blown out by a near-gale. Then Tuesday the 1st of September is a monster. An 18ft SW swell with a 16-second period, and a moderate onshore wind. The combined energy is off the charts at 14414. Again, this is an expert-only beast, but the wave quality from that groundswell will be incredible on the point, even with a bit of wind. It’s a promising but less certain long-range call.
Bottom line: The absolute standouts are the glassy, clean mornings from Saturday the 22nd through to Thursday the 27th, with the best quality coming on Tuesday the 25th. For raw power and size for experts, the morning of Saturday the 29th of August and Tuesday the 1st of September are the draws. There are a few days with no real recommendation mid-week, but it’s worth waiting for those windows.
Be safe out there.
