The Lowdown

G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for North Point.

Right off the bat, we’ve got a rough start. The first few days are a write-off – Thursday the 16th through Sunday the 19th are all rain and lumpy onshore winds, with swell up over 10 feet and strong wind. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing weird going on there. The energy is massive though – that Saturday morning shows over 10,000 (moderate to strong energy) – but with 35 km/h winds straight on it, it’s just a churned-up mess. Not worth paddling out.

Monday the 20th is still poor – cross-onshore winds and choppy 8 ft swell. No go.

Then Tuesday the 21st morning, we finally get a window. The wind swings to a light cross-offshore from the ESE at 10 km/h, and we’ve got a clean 8 ft SW swell with a 14-second period. That’s proper groundswell energy, and the combined energy reads 2862 (moderate to strong). It’s a standout for experienced surfers – this is the best of the first week. The break is a point, so that long period should wrap in nicely. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so keep an eye out.

Wednesday the 22nd morning is similar – 8 ft SW, 13-second period, light cross-offshore wind from the N at 10 km/h. Clean, solid, and again excellent for advanced surfers. Another strong morning.

Thursday the 23rd morning is glassy – wind is almost nothing from the WNW at 5 km/h. Swell is 8 ft SW at 14 seconds, energy 2846. That’s pure, clean, lined-up surf. Top-quality.

Friday the 24th is a beauty – morning offshore wind from the NE at 10 km/h, 7 ft SW swell, 13 seconds. Then afternoon goes glassy with NNE wind at 5 km/h and 6 ft swell. Both sessions are clean, with very good conditions. This is a solid run of days.

Saturday the 25th still has clean conditions with cross-offshore winds, but the swell drops to 5–6 ft and the wind picks up to 30 km/h in the morning. It’s marginal, but still rideable if you’re keen.

Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th are mostly poor again – onshore winds, lumpy, and the swell is mixed. Tuesday the 28th morning has a nice 4 ft SW swell with offshore wind from the E at 15 km/h – clean, gentle, good for a longboard session.

But the real standout of the whole outlook is Wednesday the 29th. Morning: 12 ft SW swell, 14-second period, gentle offshore wind from the ENE at 15 km/h. Afternoon: 12 ft WSW swell, 16-second period, cross-offshore wind from the SE. Both sessions are rated excellent for experienced surfers, with combined energy over 6000 (strong). That’s solid, lined-up, powerful groundswell. For a point break, that’s a dream.

Then Thursday the 30th morning is clean again with 7 ft WSW swell, and Friday the 31st morning is glassy with a massive 16 ft W swell, 14-second period, and energy reading 11772 (strong to very strong). That’s huge, and only for the experts. The glassy conditions make it a proper standout for the brave.

So, to sum it up: the first week is a dud until Tuesday the 21st, then we get a string of good to excellent days. The absolute best windows are the Wednesday the 29th sessions and the glassy Friday the 31st morning. Crowds are possible at North Point, so get there early. If you’re an advanced surfer, you’re in for a treat.

Rusty.
