The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break it down.
The first real surf window for North Point is on Friday morning, August 21st. This one’s a standout. The water’s at 66°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year. We’ve got a solid 12ft swell rolling in from the southwest, with a long 14-second period – that’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is massive at 4862, and with the wind dead calm and glassy, the surface is going to be like a mirror. This is powerful, clean surf for experienced surfers. Beginners should sit this one out. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, so expect a few others keen on the same.
Friday afternoon gets a bit messy. The wind swings to a light SSW cross-on, and the quality drops. It’s still 12ft, but the conditions go marginal due to tide and the wind starting to mess it up.
Saturday morning (August 22nd) is a drop-off. The wind has picked up to 12 mph from the south, creating a cross-on chop. The swell is still 10ft but it’s choppy and not worth paddling out for. The rest of Saturday and Sunday are poor, with strong winds and messy conditions.
But here’s the next one to circle: Monday morning, August 24th. The wind goes light from the north, giving us a clean cross-off breeze. The swell is 10ft from the southwest, period at 14 seconds, and combined energy at 3017. It’s a solid session for experienced surfers again, with clean faces. I’m calling this the second best window of the whole stretch.
Monday afternoon goes cross-shore and drops off, and Tuesday is a write-off with strong cross-shore winds and poor surf.
Now, look out for Wednesday morning, August 26th. This is a wild one. Swell jumps to 16ft from the west-southwest, with a very long 17-second period. The combined energy is a massive 15162. The wind is a light cross-on, so it’s not perfectly clean, but this is pure, raw power. It’s only for the most experienced crew. The rest of that week is either windy or onshore, so don’t bother.
Friday morning, August 28th, brings a clean session. Swell is down to 8ft from the southwest, period 12 seconds, with a light cross-off breeze from the southeast. Combined energy is 1710. It’s a good, clean, manageable wave. Not the biggest, but the conditions are right.
Saturday morning, August 29th, is another clean one. The wind is offshore from the northeast, light at 6 mph. The swell is 5ft from the southwest, period 13 seconds. Combined energy sits at 1580. This is a fun, clean wave for a wider range of abilities.
After that, the second week is a mess. From August 30th right through to September 5th, the wind is strong, often onshore, and the surf is consistently poor. There are a few bigger swells, like the 16ft and 20ft, but the wind tears them apart. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing for most of that stretch. Honestly, the first week is where it’s at.
Rusty.
