Righto, grab a coffee and let's have a look at what's coming down the pipe for North Point over the next couple of weeks.
It’s a bit of a slow start, but the wait is worthwhile for the experienced crew. The first real action we see kicks off on Monday, July 7th, with a solid swell pushing through. You're looking at a 12ft groundswell out of the SW with a long 16-second period, and a clean, light cross-off breeze on the Tuesday morning. The water temp is sitting about average for the time of year. This is proper, powerful stuff, and the combined wave energy is massive at 6009 (moderate to strong). This one’s for the advanced surfers only – over 8ft, it’s a paddling mission and not for the faint of heart. Crowds are possible here.
Then, Wednesday morning, July 8th, is a real standout. We’ve got a 10ft SW groundswell from the WSW, a very long 17-second period, and the wind goes glassy – dead flat, offshore from the NW. The combined energy is pumping at 5893 (moderate to strong), and the conditions are described as glassy. This is as clean as it gets for a point break, and those long-period lines will wrap in beautifully. Another one strictly for the experts.
The end of the first week and into the second gets messy. From Thursday the 9th through the weekend, the wind swings onshore and the quality drops right off – strong breezes and rain. The swell hangs around, but it’s a choppy, blown-out mess. There is a big 15ft swell on Saturday the 11th, but with a moderate cross-onshore wind, it’s just a washing machine. Kite surfers might be having a ball, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a no-go.
Things settle down nicely later in the second week. Monday morning, July 20th, sees a clean 7ft SW groundswell with a gentle offshore breeze from the ENE, and the combined energy is a moderate 1784. Tuesday the 21st is even better – a clean 7ft SW swell going glassy with absolutely no wind in the afternoon. Both of these are described as excellent conditions for experienced surfers, and the crowds are only possible. That’s as good as it gets for cleaner, more manageable waves.
So, to boil it down: grab Wednesday morning, July 8th for the best of the best if you’re an advanced surfer. If you want something a little less heavy but still clean, pencil in Monday morning, July 20th and Tuesday afternoon, July 21st. The long-range stuff is promising, but keep an eye on the wind.
Rusty.
