The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty checking in with the outlook for North Point.
Right now, we've got a bit of a wait on our hands. The next few days are pretty average to flat out poor, with messy onshore winds and a lot of energy in the water that just isn't coming together. We're looking at a slow start to the week, but hold tight because things change in a big way from Wednesday onward.
The real standout is going to be Wednesday, July 22nd. We've got a serious pulse of SW groundswell hitting, pushing about 12 feet, and the combined energy is thumping at 8002, that's very strong. Now, this size is for experienced surfers only, no doubt about it, especially with the period hanging around 15-16 seconds. The silver lining is a light ESE cross-offshore breeze, which will keep it clean. The tide could be a factor, so pick your bank wisely, but the morning session is the window. This is big, powerful, and for the crew who know what they're doing.
Thursday, July 23rd will still have plenty of juice – about 8 feet of SW swell and a clean offshore ENE breeze in the morning. That is a recipe for some beautiful lines. The energy is still really high (2236), so you'll feel the push.
After that, the swell backs off for the weekend and a strong northerly wind on Saturday, July 25th blows things out. Sunday the 26th looks plain ugly with howling onshores and a massive, churning 13-foot to 15-foot swell that won't be any good for paddling. That kind of setup on a point break is more for the kite crew.
We get a bit of a reset early the following week, with another pulse of SW swell coming in around 8 feet on Tuesday, July 28th. It's cleaner with a light SE breeze, and it's a much more manageable size.
Looking further out, towards the end of the month, things look promising for the more patient surfer. The morning of Thursday, July 30th has a very small but clean 4-foot swell with a 16-second period and a strong offshore wind. It'll be weak (700 energy) but perfect for a longboard or a fish if you can find a bank that works with that long period. Then into the start of August, there's another smaller, cleaner pulse showing on Saturday morning, August 1st, around 6 feet from the WSW, but it's showing a risk of thunderstorms.
So, bottom line: your big window is Wednesday morning for the experts, Thursday for a solid session, and then a few cleaner, smaller windows for the more versatile surfer late in the run. The water temp is running pretty much average for this time of year, so it's not going to be a shock to the system.
Stay frothy.
