The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for our local stretch of sand and reef at Matosinhos over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the first week and a half is a bit of a write-off. We've got a long, flat spell with barely a ripple. From Friday the 17th all the way through to the morning of Sunday the 26th, it's all small, weak, and messy. The water temp is sitting at a pretty normal 66°F, nothing unusual there. The swell energy is barely registering, with values down in the teens and twenties (16-52). You’ll see a few mornings with glassy conditions, like Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd, but with swell heights scraping in at just 1.0ft, there's nothing to ride. It’s a classic summer lull.
Things finally start to wake up on the morning of Sunday the 26th. We get a pulse of 4ft swell from the NW, but it's short period (6 seconds) and the wind is a messy cross-shore. The energy climbs to 124 which is at least a sign of life. The afternoon gets bigger, up to 5ft, but that’s accompanied by a strong 25 mph cross-onshore wind, making it a total mess. Not the one.
Now, the standout window is shaping up for the end of the month. Monday the 27th morning gives us a glimmer – 4ft from the NW with a gentle cross-shore breeze and energy hitting 234. It's rated as marginal, but it's the first real sign of something rideable.
But the real highlight is the morning of Thursday the 30th and, even better, the morning of Friday the 31st. On Thursday the 30th, we’ve got a clean 5ft from the NW with light cross-shore winds and a combined energy of 245. It’s small but clean. Then on Friday the 31st of July, the stars align. We’ve got morning glass – a light offshore breeze from the SSW – with a solid 5ft of NW swell. The energy is 235, and the conditions are expected to be good. This is your best bet for some clean, fun waves on the banks. It’s a little small for experts, but perfect for a longboard or a funboard.
The afternoon of the 29th of July is worth a mention too, with a longer period 6ft swell (11 seconds) from the NW and an onshore breeze. The energy is high at 647, but it’s a bit on the bigger side and the wind isn't perfect. It could be a bit of a handful, but for the experienced crew, there might be a few good ones in between the choppy sets.
The run of small surf continues for the first day of August, with a clean but small 3ft on the Saturday morning with a light offshore from the east. It’s a small, clean end to the forecast.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is a flat, glassy dud. The best windows are the morning of Thursday the 30th and the morning of Friday the 31st of July, with Friday looking the cleanest. That’s your window for a proper session.
Rusty.
