Table - best surf conditions forecast for Matosinhos over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – if you’re looking for a proper surf in the next couple of weeks around Matosinhos, you’re gonna be disappointed. This is about as flat and messy as it gets for a while. The whole 16-day window is basically a write-off, with no standout sessions on offer. The first bit of anything that even looks like a wave doesn’t appear until over a week in, and even then it’s ordinary.
Starting off, from Thursday the 9th right through to Saturday the 18th, it’s pretty much all poor surf conditions. Swell is tiny, mostly around 1ft to 2ft, with weak energy (57 to 148) and short periods between 6 and 11 seconds. The wind is almost always cross-on or onshore, and the water is a bit colder than normal at 63°F, about 2°F cooler than average for this time. Nothing to get excited about.
Then on Sunday the 19th, we finally get a little glimmer. The morning turns glassy – yeah, glassy! – with a light WSW breeze. Swell comes in at 3ft from the NW with a period of 8 seconds and moderate energy (122). The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” and it scores a 1. That’s the best of the whole run, but honestly, it’s still pretty weak. Monday the 20th morning is also glassy with 4ft NW swell, again ordinary. After that, it’s back to poor surf and cross-on winds.
The rest of the second week just fades away. Swell stays under 3ft, periods are short, and the wind is messy. By Friday the 24th, we’re looking at 3ft NW swell with a fresh 22 mph cross-on – that’s lumpy and not worth paddling out for.
So, bottom line: there’s no real standouts here. If you’re desperate, the glassy mornings on the 19th and 20th might give you a few small, clean waves, but it’s hardly a session to write home about. For kite surfers, the afternoons with stronger cross-on winds and bigger chop could be more fun than a paddle. Otherwise, keep the board in the car and wait for a better forecast.
Rusty.
