The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Lymans.
Right off the bat, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – the next week and a half is looking pretty flat and uninspiring around Lymans. This is a classic reef and point setup, pretty exposed to the west-northwest, and it’s a consistent spot, but the ocean’s just not cooperating. The water temperature is sitting at 82°F, which is about 2°F warmer than the long-term average for this time of year, so it’s a touch warmer than usual, but nothing wild.
We’ve got a real quiet spell from Tuesday, August 18th, all the way through until the evening of Sunday, August 23rd. The swell is tiny, mostly hanging around 1ft to 2ft, and the combined wave energy is barely cracking 100 (49 to 295 in the moderate range for a brief moment, but mostly weak). The winds are a mix of cross-on and onshore, keeping things messy. You’ll see a few glassy windows, like Wednesday afternoon and Thursday afternoon, but with waves that small, it’s more a paddle than a surf.
Then we hit a bit of a dry spell from Monday, August 24th, right through to the end of the month. The swell picks up a touch, with wave heights reaching 4ft on Tuesday, August 25th, and the combined energy jumps into the moderate range (517 to 605), but the wind is still cross-on or coming from the south, which isn’t ideal for Lymans. The period is short (11-12 seconds), so it’s not packing much punch. It’s still marginal at best, with scores of 1 out of 10.
The real standout, and the only one I’d even raise an eyebrow at, is way out there on Wednesday, September 2nd. The morning session shows a 5ft swell from the south-southwest, with a period of 9 seconds and combined energy of 876 (moderate-to-strong). The wind is offshore from the west at 6 mph, which is a major positive for clean conditions. This is the best on offer, but it’s over two weeks away, so treat it as promising but not locked in. The swell direction is south-southwest, which isn’t the optimum west-northwest for Lymans, but with offshore wind and a bit of size, it could produce some fun, clean waves for the more experienced crew. The period is short, so the waves will be a bit weak and sectiony, but at least the wind will make it look clean.
Honestly, between now and then, there’s not much to write home about. If you’re desperate, you might find a longboard-friendly ripple on Wednesday or Thursday afternoon, but don’t expect much. For the big picture, Lymans is a consistent spot, so this flat run is a bit of a bummer, but it’s not unusual for the area. Keep your eye on that September 2nd session.
Rusty out.
