Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the stretch ahead for Hossegor - La Graviere. Honestly, it’s a pretty flat and frustrating run for the next two weeks. We’ve got a long dry spell to start, and it’s not until the tail end that anything worth paddling for shows up.
The water here is sitting at 73° right now, which is a solid 5° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual, like bathwater compared to what we’d expect.
The first real highlight comes much later. Saturday, July 17th morning, we start to see a pulse of swell. It’s not perfect but it’s the best on offer. Swell comes in at 4ft from the WNW, with a period of 9 seconds – so it’s a short period swell, not a groundswell. The combined energy is moderate, clocking in at 267. The wind is light onshore out of the W, which will mess with the surface a bit. It won’t be glassy, but it’s the biggest push we get.
The afternoon of the 17th stays similar: 5ft from the WNW, 9 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 286 (still moderate). Wind shifts to WNW at 6 mph, cross-onshore, so expect some light chop. Not a dream day, but compared to the rest of the window, this is where you want to be.
The rest of the period is grim. From Saturday July 4th right through until we hit that standout, almost every session is rated as poor surf conditions. The swell is tiny, mostly under 3ft, and the wind is constantly onshore or cross-onshore. There’s a brief moment on Sunday morning July 5th with glassy conditions and 2ft from the WNW – clean but painfully small. And again Monday morning July 6th gives us clean 2ft from the NW with light offshore wind, but it’s just not enough to get excited about. The energy is weak, reading 61 (combined energy). That’s a long gap of nothing.
So if you’re a beginner, the small clean days might be okay for learning, but don’t expect much push. The standout swell on the 17th is over 4ft, so it could be a bit much for total beginners, and the period is short so the waves will be a little crumbly. For experts, the size is fine but the quality isn’t there.
Given the persistent onshore wind and small, short-period swell, this setup honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing for most of the period. The waves just aren’t holding shape.
That’s the long and short of it. Hang in there.
Rusty.
