The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s cooking for Hossegor - La Graviere. The next 16 days have a lot of windy and messy stuff to get through, but there’s a real decent window right at the tail end if you can wait.
The water’s running much warmer than normal right now, sitting at 25°, which is nearly 3° above the usual for this time of year. That’s a nice bonus.
Right now, the start is a total washout. Wednesday the 19th has tiny 1ft NW windswell with a short 6 second period, and the wind is straight onshore. Combined energy is a weak 15. Not worth paddling for. Thursday the 20th brings a bit more size, 4ft NW, but it’s messy cross-shore wind, and the energy is still only moderate at 375. Friday the 21st is more of the same, 5ft NW with a 10 second period, but the cross-onshore wind keeps it ugly. Energy is 517.
The first real glimmer comes Saturday the 22nd. The swell drops to 4ft NW with a 9 second period, but the wind swings to a light cross-offshore in the morning, making it clean. The combined energy is 211, so it’s mild, but it’s the cleanest we’ve seen. The afternoon goes glassy, but the waves are very ordinary. It’s a small window if you’re desperate.
After that, we hit a real dry spell. From Sunday the 23rd all the way through to Monday the 31st, the conditions are mostly poor. There’s a bump in size on the 24th afternoon with 6ft, but the wind is howling onshore. The 27th actually sees a solid 12ft WNW swell with a 10 second period, and the energy is a massive 2308, but the wind is screaming onshore at 15 mph, making it completely unsurfable. A few days later, the 31st morning has an 8ft WNW swell with a long 12 second period and 1810 energy, but it’s another onshore mess.
Now, the standout. Hold out for the very end of the forecast. On Wednesday the 2nd of September, everything comes together. The morning brings a clean 6ft NW swell, 10 second period, with a light cross-offshore wind from the ESE. The energy is a solid 659. The afternoon is even better, with the wind turning offshore from the ENE, glassy, and the swell still holding at 5ft. This is the best period on offer, clean and with good energy. It’s a point break setup, so that long period groundswell will line up nicely.
A couple of days later, the 3rd of September, the wind shifts back onshore, and the window closes.
So, the honest call: The best surf of the whole outlook is the morning and afternoon of Wednesday the 2nd of September. That’s the one to circle. The 22nd of August is a small, clean backup. Everything else, you’re fighting the wind for a sloppy wave. Patience, my friends.
Rusty out.
