The Lowdown
Right then, folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s on offer over the next couple of weeks for Hossegor - La Graviere. I’ll be straight with you: the start is a bit of a dud, but there is a glimmer towards the end of the first week that’s worth circling on your calendar.
We’ve got a long stretch of nothing much happening right now. From Monday the 17th all the way through to Thursday the 20th, it’s pretty flat and messy. The wind is mostly cross-onshore or onshore, the swell is tiny with weak energy (64 to 377), and it’s just not worth paddling out. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. You’re better off staying on the beach for those days.
Now, Friday the 21st is where it gets interesting. We’ve got a 5ft NW swell rolling in with a clean 10-second period. The morning is looking magic with a light cross-offshore breeze from the ENE – that should clean things right up at La Graviere. The combined swell energy is a solid 451 (moderate wave energy). This is a standout session for the advanced crew, but remember, 5ft can be a handful for beginners. The swell direction from the NW is right in the pocket for the optimum. Just a heads up, crowds are possible here, so be ready to share. The afternoon turns a bit onshore again, so make the most of the early session.
Saturday morning the 22nd brings a smaller 4ft NW swell (190 energy), but with a clean offshore Easterly breeze, it’ll be surfable. Not a classic, but better than the rest. Sunday the 23rd has a tiny 2ft NW swell, but the morning is glassy with a SE wind – almost flat, but the clean conditions might let you catch a few longboard waves if you’re keen.
After that, we go into another quiet spell. The energy drops right off (36 to 77) through to the end of the month, with mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds and very poor conditions. Don’t bother with the 7ft on Tuesday the 25th – it’s onshore wind, it’ll be a mess.
Looking into early September, the 30th of August shows a 5ft NW swell with 496 energy, but the wind is cross-onshore and it’s described as poor. Not a goer.
So, to sum it up: if you’re an experienced surfer, set your alarm for Friday the 21st of August morning. That’s the clear headliner. Everything else in the next two weeks is either flat, choppy, or just not worth the wetsuit.
Stay wet,
Rusty
