The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty checkin’ in from the Hossegor region. We’re looking at the 16-day surf forecast for La Graviere, and I gotta be straight with you right now—it’s a slow start. The first few days are pretty flat and weak, with tiny swell and poor conditions. We’ve got a solid gap of real surf from the 23rd through the 26th of August where nothing’s worth paddling out for. That’s a stretch of days with no real swell to speak of, just scraps.

Now, the real action starts to show itself on Thursday morning, the 27th of August. That’s our first proper standout. We’ve got a 5 ft swell from the WNW, period around 9 seconds, and the wind is glassy off the south—dead calm, just a slight air. That’s clean as it gets, boys. The wave energy is moderate at 405, and the water temp is sitting at 76°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year—so you’ll be comfy in a shorty or even boardies. La Graviere is a sandbar setup, exposed to the west, and this swell direction is straight in. It’s a solid option for the advanced crew, and though it’s fairly consistent, expect some company—crowds are sometimes there.

After that, we get a big spike on Friday the 28th—12 ft swell from the WNW, but that’s a monster. That’s too big for most punters, only for experts. Wind is cross-onshore and choppy, so it’s gonna be messy. The wave energy is massive at 3385, but honestly, it’s more of a challenge than a pleasure. Saturday the 29th drops a bit, but still 7 ft with light cross-onshore breeze—still marginal, not ideal.

Then we get a second standout on Sunday morning, the 30th of August. Clean offshore from the ESE, 5 ft swell from the NW, period 9 seconds, and the wave energy is 359. Glassy clean conditions again. That’s a beauty for the advanced surfer, and it’s a nice return to good surf after the heavy stuff.

The rest of the week into early September is mostly small and ordinary—3 ft or less, with clean but weak waves. Not much to write home about until Saturday the 5th of September, where we get another promising window: 5 ft from the NW, glassy calm, clean. That’s good. And Sunday the 6th of September early morning is even better—5 ft from the NW, glassy, with energy at 415. That’s a standout in the long-range, but remember, it’s a bit further out so keep an eye on the forecast.

The second week goes quiet again after that, with some swell on the 7th of September around 7 ft but with cross-onshore wind and chop—not great for clean waves.

All in all, the best on offer is Thursday morning the 27th of August and Sunday morning the 30th of August, with a shout-out to Saturday the 5th and Sunday the 6th of September for the long-range promise. La Graviere is the spot, but when it’s big, it’s for the brave only.

Rusty out.
