The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk Hossegor in feet and miles per hour. Rusty here.
The next week or so is mostly about waiting for the right windows. The swell’s all over the place, and the wind is usually the enemy. We’re starting flat and messy.
From Friday 21 August through Tuesday 25 August, it’s a total bust. Cross-onshore winds, chop, and tiny waves. Friday afternoon has a 6ft NW swell, but with a 12 mph onshore wind, forget it. The combined energy is moderate at best, around 569 (moderate wave energy). Not worth it.
There’s a tiny chance early Saturday morning, 22 August. La Graviere cleans up with a light 9 mph offshore breeze from the east. The swell is a small 4ft from the NW with a 9-second period (moderate energy of 266). It’s clean and offshore, but it’s small and it gets crowded here – expect a pack. Saturday afternoon the wind turns cross-offshore and the swell drops, so the morning is your only window.
Sunday 23 August is tiny and useless. Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 are even worse, with almost no swell. A brief, weak pulse on Wednesday 26 August morning with a 3ft WNW swell and light cross-off wind is only “surfable,” not good. The combined energy is 111 (weak).
Then things get big, but ugly. Thursday 27 August stays choppy. Friday 28 August sees a 7ft WNW swell with onshore wind – a mess. The real story is Friday afternoon: a solid 10ft WNW swell with a 10-second period. The combined energy hits a massive 2089 (very strong wave energy). The wind is cross-onshore and it’s choppy. It’s predicted to be too big for this break, so unless you are an absolute expert, stay out. This is for the pros only, and it’ll be a washing machine. The water temp is about average for the season.
Saturday 29 August drops to 5ft but is still onshore and poor. The rest of the forecast through early September is mostly small, weak, and poor.
The one standout, and the only real one to mark, is Saturday 5 September. La Graviere gets a clean 4ft NW swell with a 9-second period and a light 6 mph offshore wind from the east. The combined energy is 241 (moderate). It’s clean, glassy in the morning, and the best conditions in this whole run. It’s a long way off, so keep your fingers crossed, but it’s the one to watch. If you get out that morning, it’ll be worth it.
So, don’t bother with the next week. Clean up on Saturday 5 September morning if it holds. That’s your shot. Until then, it’s a lot of waiting.
Rusty.
