Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up for Hossegor – La Graviere over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the start of this outlook is a bit of a slow burner. We’ve got a bit of a wait before anything really gets going. The first couple of days are looking pretty average, with a small, weak WNW swell bumping around the 3 to 5 ft mark but with a cross-onshore wind messing it up. Thursday afternoon and Friday morning are a write-off, with poor conditions and marginal surf.
The first real window where things come together looks like Saturday morning, July 4th. The swell drops a touch, but we’re looking at a clean 4 ft from the WNW, with a period around 10 seconds, and the wind goes glassy. Combined wave energy is moderate at 261, and that offshore glass means the sandbars at La Graviere will have clean, lined-up peaks. That’s the standout for the first week. Saturday afternoon, the wind swings onshore again, so get on it early.
The water temp is sitting at 73°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a solid 6° anomaly. So you can probably leave the full wetsuit at home for that session.
After that, the surf drops right off. There’s a long stretch from Sunday July 5th all the way through to about Friday July 10th where the swell is tiny, mostly between 2 ft and 3 ft. The energy is weak, in the double digits or low triple digits (62 to 139), and while you get some clean windows with offshore or glassy wind, the waves are just too small to get excited about. Sunday morning has a clean 2 ft with a cross-offshore breeze, but it’s really just a longboard or foiling kind of day.
We don’t see another bump until Saturday July 11th. The swell direction holds from the NW, but the size is back up around 2 ft to 3 ft. The period jumps to a long 12 seconds on Saturday morning, which gives the waves more push and shape. But the wind is a light cross-on, so it’s not glassy. The combined energy is moderate (229), so it’s an improvement, but not a classic day.
Sunday July 12th morning is another possibility – a glassy start with 3 ft from the NW, period at 10 seconds, and clean conditions. Still small, but rideable. After that, the second week goes flat and messy. From Monday July 13th onward, we’re seeing swell below 3 ft, with short periods (5-8 seconds) and persistent onshore or cross-shore winds. The combined energy drops into the double digits (28 to 92). It’s not worth paddling out for unless you’re really keen on a small, chop-infested session. By Thursday July 16th, the wind picks up to 18 mph from the west, and it’s just poor.
So to sum it up: the one true standout is Saturday morning, July 4th. Clean, glassy, waist-to-chest high waves at La Graviere. Get it early. After that, it’s mostly small and average until the second week, where it flatlines. Not much to get the heart racing out there.
Stay stoked,
Rusty.
