Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s heading our way for Hossegor – La Graviere. It’s a pretty quiet start, to be honest. There’s a solid window of small, weak, and mostly messy conditions right through the first several days. I wouldn’t be rushing to wet a wetsuit just yet. The swell energy is mostly weak for the first week, with only a few moments of clean glass to keep hope alive.
Gonna break it down day by day.
Friday, July 3rd – We have a stiff cross-onshore NNW wind at 9 mph making a mess of a 4.6 ft NW swell. The period is around 11 seconds, so there’s some reach, but the wind is wrecking any shape. Combined energy is moderate (415). The water temperature is 73.4°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year — actually a pretty wild anomaly of 5.8° warmer. But with conditions like this, you’re better off waiting.
Saturday, July 4th – A slight improvement in the morning if you’re an early bird. There’s a small early window with a light offshore WNW breeze and a 3.9 ft swell from the WNW, period 10 seconds. But it’s marginal and there’s a tide question. The afternoon goes back to cross-on mess. Combined energy moderate (261).
Sunday, July 5th – Best chance of the early run. Sunday morning, glassy conditions with zero wind. Swell is tiny, 2.0 ft from the WNW, period 10 seconds. Combined energy is low (146). It won’t be epic, but if you want to get wet on a log, this is the most pleasant session of the first week. Sunday afternoon turns to crud again.
Monday, July 6th – Another morning glass-off: easterly 3 mph, 2.0 ft NW swell, period 9 seconds. Weak energy (73) but smooth. Afternoon goes cross-shore choppy. It’s all a bit average.
Tuesday, July 7th through to Tuesday, July 14th – We hit a real dry spell here. Most days have tiny swell — 1.0 ft to 2.3 ft — short periods mostly, and crap wind for surfing onshore or cross-onshore. Energy readings are in the weak to low moderate range (45 up to 105). There are nothing more than a few glassy morning scraps for a longboard. Not worth packing the car for.
Wednesday, July 15th – Finally something that starts to flicker. Morning glass, clean, 2.3 ft WNW swell, period 9 seconds, and the energy is climbing to a moderate 131. It’s small but if the forecast holds, that morning window could be a sneaky fun session on a big board. Afternoon gets cross-onshore again.
Thursday, July 16th – Another glassy morning with glassy E wind at 3 mph. Swell is 3.6 ft from the WNW, short period though at 5 seconds – that’s weak energy bumping up (116). The short period means it’ll be weak and gutless, but clean.
Friday, July 17th & Saturday, July 18th – We finish with some action moving in. Saturday morning shows a building swell of 4.6 ft from the NW, period 9 seconds, strong moderate energy of 339. But it’s onshore WNW wind at 9 mph, so the quality is poor. A big clean-up is still not on the cards.
Best bet: If I’m being straight with you, the standout in this whole 16-day block is Sunday morning, July 5th – glassy conditions and small fun waves. And Wednesday morning, July 15th looks like the best clean session of the second week. Don’t expect barrels — more of a grovel, but clean. La Graviere (sandbar setup) can still be fun when it’s small if the wind is off. It’s an advanced spot, so beginners should stay away anyway, especially if the swell pushes over 4.9 ft — which this outlook just doesn’t do. Crowds are possible sometimes here, so on those glassy mornings, expect a few heads bobbing around.
Water temp is interesting early on at 73.4°, that’s much warmer than usual for the time of year — 5.8° above average. No wetsuit needed if you run warm.
Stay patient, wait for that glass. I’ll be doing the same.
