Table - best surf conditions forecast for Hossegor - La Graviere over the next 16 days.
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Hossegor - La Graviere. I’ll be straight with you, it’s a tough run ahead.
The next two weeks are looking lean. There’s a long, frustrating stretch of small, weak surf and poor conditions, and it’s only right at the very end of the window that we get a serious pulse of swell, but with the wind working against us.
To kick things off, on Sunday afternoon, the 12th, you’ve got tiny 2 ft swell from the WNW with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is weak at 55, and with a north cross-breeze, it’s just not worth paddling out. It’s poor. The water temp is a very unusual 75°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year.
Monday morning, the 13th, is the closest thing we get to a silver lining in this first week. The swell picks up to a waist-high 4 ft from the WNW, and the wind goes glassy. The combined energy is moderate at 148. It’s surfable, but the conditions are described as ordinary. It won’t be a classic, but if you’re desperate for a paddle, that early session is your only real shot. The wind will be offshore for that morning window.
After that, it’s grim. From Monday afternoon all the way through to the 22nd of July, we’re looking at a dry spell of small, choppy, onshore mush. There’s nothing that qualifies as a good option. The swell stays small, the wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, and the energy readings are weak, often under 100.
Now, hold on to your board, because things change in the last few days. On the 23rd of July, Thursday morning, we get a solid 6 ft swell from the NW, but it’s onshore with a west wind at 12 mph. The combined energy is a strong 508, but the quality is poor. That afternoon the swell builds to 7 ft from the NW with a period of 10 seconds, pushing the energy to a very strong 904. Still, the onshore wind is going to chop it up badly for Hossegor’s sandbar.
The 24th of July, Friday, sees a 6 ft NW swell with a 10-second period and strong energy at 650, but again, onshore west wind. That afternoon the wind shifts a little cross-onshore from the NW, and the swell is 6 ft with energy at 510. It’s described as marginal.
This is the heavily caveated highlight. For the 23rd and 24th of July, the NW swell is building with decent size and period, but the onshore and cross-onshore wind is going to make it a battle. La Graviere (Hossegor) is an exposed sandbar, and with that size—6 ft to 7 ft—it will be pushing the limits for beginners and is only for experienced surfers. Honestly, with the strong onshore wind and the size, it looks more interesting for kite surfing than a clean paddle session.
Overall, the only standout window that offers any promise of decent swell size is that 23rd and 24th of July period, but the wind is the spoiler. It’s a case of what could have been. For now, I’d be looking for a flat water spot to keep the arm strong.
