The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Hossegor over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim stretch for Hossegor – La Graviere. The first week is a write-off, with barely a ripple. The water is a toasty 75°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing worth mentioning. You’ve got a long, flat spell with no real surf to speak of until the very end of the period.
The first real swell starts to show up around the 26th of July, Sunday morning, with a 5ft NW swell. The energy is moderate (287). But the wind is a moderate cross-onshore from the NW, so it’s going to be choppy and messy. That lasts through the afternoon, with the energy picking up a bit (331), but the wind stays the same. It’s not good.
The 27th, Monday morning, sees a 4ft NW swell with a bit more period (8 seconds) and the energy is moderate (229). The wind is light onshore from the WNW. It’s still marginal, not worth getting excited about.
The best looking window is the morning of the 28th, Tuesday. The swell drops to 3ft from the NW, but the energy is moderate (129). The real standout here is the wind: glassy, light from the East. That’s the only clean window I can see. It’s small, but it’ll be clean. The afternoon goes to crap with a cross-shore chop.
After that, the swell picks up again through the 29th and 30th of July, with 4ft NW swells and moderate energy (up to 300). The period stretches to 10 seconds, which is decent. But the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s going to be blown out. The 31st of July, Friday morning, has a slight cross-onshore breeze and a 4ft NW swell, but it’s still marginal.
The absolute best call here is the morning of the 28th of July. It’s small, but it’s the only time the wind is right. If you’re desperate, that’s your window. For the rest of it, leave the board in the car. The conditions are just not there.
Rusty.
