Table - best surf conditions forecast for Hossegor - La Graviere over the next 16 days.
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s get into it for Hossegor - La Graviere.
Right now, the surf isn’t much to write home about. The whole 16-day window looks like it’s gonna be a grind for most of it. Gotta be patient. The swell stays small and weak for almost the first two weeks, with a lot of onshore or cross-onshore wind blowing things to pieces. There’s one tiny window that’s a standout, but it’s nearly a fortnight away.
We’re starting with a real flat spell. Saturday morning (11 July) there’s a tiny 2ft swell from the WNW, but it’s only 9 seconds and the energy is weak, just a measly 104 reading. However, what makes this little blip special is the wind – dead calm, glassy, off the land. The water is a balmy 74°, which is over 6° warmer than usual, so really unusual. But the swell is so small and ordinary (1 out of 10) that it’s still not one I’d paddle out for. Saturday afternoon gets nuked by a 12 mph cross-offshore that cleans the surface but the waves are even worse. Sunday morning (12 July) has a light offshore breeze again, but it’s even smaller and weaker, with only 2ft and a combined energy of 84. Still no go.
After that, we hit a real desert. From Sunday afternoon (12 July) right through to Tuesday the 21st of July, there are only poor surf conditions listed, one after the other. The swell mostly hovers between 0.7ft and 4ft, but consistently has onshore or crummy cross-onshore wind. The wave periods are short, often 5 to 7 seconds, with very weak energy. It’s just flat and messy. For about 9 or 10 days, there’s nothing worth chasing.
Then, finally, on Wednesday morning the 22nd of July, things look different. That’s your standout. The swell picks up to 4ft from the NNW, with a period of 7 seconds – not a long groundswell, but it’s something. The combined energy jumps to 201, which is solid, moderate energy. And the wind? Glassy again, light out of the ENE. The forecast says “expect good surf conditions” and gives it a 2 out of 10, which is the only high score in the whole outlook. That morning is your real chance for a clean, rippable session. It’s still a fairly small wave, but it’s head-high maybe, and on a sandbar like La Graviere, with that offshore glass, it’s a little window of perfection. Crowds are *sometimes* a problem here, and with a window this good after a flat spell, expect it to be busy.
That afternoon the wind swings NNW and cranks up to 12 mph cross-onshore, and it gets chopped up. Then it’s back to poor conditions right through to the end of the period. So take that Wednesday morning session and make it count. The rest of this run is for checking your wax and waiting for a better set of charts.
Rusty.
