The Lowdown
Alright, crew, Rusty here. Let’s talk it out.
First up, Saturday morning, the 22nd of August at Hossegor - La Graviere (France). We’ve got a 4ft swell out of the NW, with a light offshore breeze out of the east keeping things tidy. The water is much warmer than normal for this time of year – about 76° with a nearly 3° anomaly. That’s a real bonus. The combined energy is moderate (242), and the sandbar is fairly consistent. Saturday afternoon drops off a bit, but still worth a paddle.
Sunday the 23rd is flat. Swell down to 2ft, period short, barely any energy. Monday and Tuesday are even smaller. A real quiet stretch.
Now for the big one. Friday morning, the 28th of August. The swell jumps to 10ft from the WNW, period 9 seconds, and the combined energy is massive at 1435. That’s a lot of power. The wind is cross-onshore, but the forecast says the wind and tide are favorable for this spot. Still, 10ft at an advanced break like La Graviere is no joke. Experts only. The break is exposed, so it’ll handle the size, but it’s a heavy day. Saturday morning the 29th cleans up to 5ft from the NW with a clean cross-off breeze, making for a great follow-up.
Into September, Tuesday morning the 1st brings 5ft from the NW with glassy conditions – a light breeze, no chop. That’s clean, friendly size, moderate energy (306). Expect company at the takeoff zone.
The long-range standout? Saturday morning the 5th of September. The wind goes completely glassy – calm. The swell is 6ft from the WNW, period 10 seconds, and the combined energy is a solid 669. The forecast says very good surf conditions. The east wind is perfect for this break, and the size is big enough for a proper session without being overwhelming. Mark it down, but it’s a week and a half out – keep your fingers crossed.
We’ve got a few blown-out days in between, especially the 31st of August and the 3rd of September. The 3rd has a 6ft NW swell with a long 11-second period, but the onshore wind kills it. The 4th is a total loss.
So here’s the deal: the 22nd is a nice warm-up, the 28th is for the brave, the 29th and 1st are clean and fun, and the 5th of September is the one to hope for.
Rusty.
