The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s talk about Hossegor - La Graviere. The water is a warm 76.3°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, almost 3° above average. That’s a real bonus.
The gold in this forecast is Saturday 22nd August morning. We’ve got a clean 3.6ft swell from the NW, with a 9-second period. The wind is a gentle offshore breeze from the east, keeping the surface glassy. The combined energy is a solid moderate 211. For a sandbar that’s exposed and fairly consistent, this is your best bet. The swell direction is from the NW, which is close to the optimum W direction, and with offshore winds, it should be a good morning. Expect crowds to be possible at this spot.
After that, the surf drops off. Sunday morning sees the swell fade to 2ft, with a short period. The wind is still offshore but very light, so it’s clean, but there’s no power. From Sunday afternoon, we slide into a lull that lasts all the way through to Wednesday morning. There are several days of small, weak, and often onshore or cross-shore conditions. The swell drops to as low as 0.7ft, and the energy is in the single digits. Not much to get excited about.
There’s a bit of a pulse on Thursday 27th August morning, but it’s a tricky one. Swell jumps to 4.9ft with a 10-second period, and the energy is a strong 411, but the wind is light and variable from the south, making it cross-shore and a bit bumpy. It’s a marginal session.
Things get big on Friday 28th August, but it’s not for the faint of heart. We’re looking at 11.5ft of swell from the WNW with a long 11-second period. The energy is a massive 2877, but the wind is a strong cross-onshore or onshore breeze. That’s a lot of power, but it’ll be a washing machine. This setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The rest of the period into the first week of September is a mix of small, clean mornings and onshore afternoons. There are a few glassy windows with swell around 2.3ft to 3.3ft, but the periods are short (8 seconds), and the energy is low. It’s surfable but very ordinary. The wind is often glassy or light offshore in the mornings, but the swell just isn’t there.
Look, the first week is a write-off after Saturday. The long-range outlook for the first week of September has a few promising mornings with glassy conditions, but the swell is small. The real standout is that Saturday morning. Get out there if you can.
Short Range ForecastModerate rain (total 10mm), heaviest on Sun night. Warm (max 31°C on Mon afternoon, min 15°C on Sat morning).
