Hossegor - Les Culs Nuls Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Hossegor. Let’s break it down, plain and simple.

Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with you – the next week or so is looking pretty flat and ordinary around here. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak swell and dodgy winds. The first real sniff of anything decent doesn’t show up until later on.

Thursday morning, the 6th of August, we might see a tiny pulse. Swell is a weak 3 ft out of the NW with a short period of 8 seconds and combined energy of just 121 (moderate). The kicker is the wind – a light NNE breeze blowing cross-offshore, which should keep things clean. It’s surfable, but you won’t be getting your hopes up. Friday morning, the 7th, offers a brief window of glassy conditions with no wind, but the swell drops to 3 ft from the NNW and the period is a very short 6 seconds, so the energy is weak (63). You might get a few lumpy walls, but it’s inconsistent.

After that, we’re looking at a real dry spell. From Saturday the 8th right through to Monday the 17th of August, the call is mostly poor surf conditions. The swell is tiny, mostly under 2 ft, and the wind is blowing onshore or cross-onshore, keeping things choppy and messy. There’s a glimmer on Tuesday morning, the 11th, with glassy conditions, but the swell is still only 2 ft and weak. It’s a paddling day, not a surfing day.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting for the crew who are willing to wait. Things start to change around Tuesday the 18th of August. We get a solid jump in size. Tuesday morning shows an 8 ft swell from the WNW, with a period of 9 seconds and combined energy of 943 (strong). That’s a proper amount of water moving. The wind is onshore, though, so it’s going to be a messy, powerful beast – definitely for experts only. Wednesday the 19th is similar, with 7 ft on offer, but again, onshore wind.

The standout in the whole run looks like Thursday morning, the 20th of August. The swell is a clean 4 ft from the NW with an 8-second period and combined energy of 211 (moderate). The best part? The wind is light from the WNW, glassy. That’s the window to aim for. It’s not the biggest, but it’ll be the cleanest we’ve seen in ages. The optimum swell direction for Les Culs Nuls is west, and this is a bit north of that, but for the conditions, it’s your best bet.

Water temp is about average for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick wetsuit.

Keep an eye on that Thursday the 20th. It’s a long way out, but it’s the only one that’s got my attention.
