The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here, and I’m gonna level with you. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty tough for a good surf.

The main break in the picture is Kolekole, a river mouth that’s fairly consistent. The water temp is about 81°F, which is right on the money for this time of year.

We start off on Friday, September 4th, with a solid 7ft swell coming from the east. It’s got a long 14-second period and a heap of energy (1678). The wind is light out of the northeast, so it’s clean, but the report says the tide might be a problem. It’s worth a look, but don’t expect perfection.

Saturday, September 5th is similar. A 7ft easterly swell in the morning, bumping up to 8ft from the east-northeast in the afternoon. The wind is light, and the energy is high. But again, the tide question hangs over it. This is the best stretch we’ve got, but it’s not a guarantee.

From Sunday, September 6th, the wind shifts cross-onshore and the waves get choppy. By Monday, September 7th, the wind is blowing a steady 15 mph from the east-southeast, and the surf is officially poor. This messy run continues through to about Thursday, September 10th, with only small windows of cleaner wind but tiny, weak swell.

There’s a little hope on Friday, September 11th, with a 5ft east-northeast swell and a 11-second period, but the wind is onshore and it’s still a marginal call. Saturday, September 12th has a bit more size in the afternoon – 8ft from the east – but it’s cross-onshore and choppy.

After that, it’s a long stretch of poor to marginal surf. The wind stays mostly cross-onshore or onshore, and the swell gets small and weak. Nothing stands out. The second week is a total write-off.

For this spot, a blank run like this isn’t unheard of. The forecasts can change, but right now, the Friday afternoon, September 4th and Saturday, September 5th windows are your best shot. The swell is there, the energy is strong, but you’ll be fighting the tide. If you’re a beginner, that 7ft+ swell might be a handful, and the river mouth can get tricky.

Honestly, with all that cross-onshore wind and chunky swell, it’s looking more like a kite-surfing day than a clean paddle session.

Stay patient, and keep an eye on the sky.
